A European Directive in the background

• The EU directive 2002/91/CE on energy performance of the buildings : a common framework intended to promote the improvement of the energy performance of the buildings in the European Union.

• Every member state has turned this directive into local laws supporting the energy savings in buildings and the carbon footprint reduction

Where/why do we spend money on energy in Buildings?

• The summer heat inside a building comes from

– Inside: lightening, electrical appliances, occupants

• The best way to use solar gain is to stop the heat before it has entered the house

• It costs 3 to 4 times more to COOL a

building by 1°C than to HEAT a building.

• In most cases, passive cooling can be the

most cost effective & green solution

How do Solar Control Films Work?The most typical construction is to have a very thin coating of metal applied to a thin polyester film with an optically clear and long lasting

adhesive that bonds the film to the window, allowing the metal to reflect away the sun’s heat and allowing you to see out.

The top window is allowing 87% of total solar energy into the building

and with the film this can be reduced to 12%
