CPV is evolvingConcentrated photovoltaics is making some serious headway in the renewable energy landscape, with burgeoning pipelines across the globe and established projects delivering priceless data. Almost 700MW are now either planned or up and running, and recent reports estimate spectacular growth to 12.5GW of installed capacity by 2020. Installations are springing up across the world, from Mexico to Australia, as pilot projects move towards megawatts. At the centre of this growing critical mass, one key geographical hotspot is fast becoming the hub of the technology - where else but the United States?
Industry experts predict that at least 1GW of new installations will be in place by 2015, pushing the CPV cause even further. Cell efficiencies continue to drive onwards and upwards, with the establishment of a 43.5% benchmark earlier this year a testament to the inherent technical advantages that CPV enjoys over its rivals. Innovation in optics and sophisticated tracking systems have helped to exploit these advantages, making CPV peerless in areas of high DNI and uninterrupted sunlight.
The barriers to market proliferation With so much scientific potential and a host of USPs, you’d be forgiven for wondering why CPV is not already the golden boy of the solar world. The technology is suffering from all of the traditional growing pains of PV, but restricted further by the age-old question of bankability and a reluctance on the part of the utilities to take the plunge with an industry that promises much but has not yet delivered on the same scale as other technologies.
CPV is still playing catch-up with its competitors in both CSP and PV. False promises of a CPV boom have left both investors and end-users uncertain, and the technology’s growth curve was severely stunted by the recent economic crisis. In addition, the number of US-based utility-scale CPV projects pales into insignificance against the super-scale CSP behemoth and the quantity of thin film and crystalline silicon installations.
The need for direct sunlight is a major obstacle for the technology, and doubt over the long-term reliability of CPV, yet to provide compelling evidence on this front over an extended period, still plagues investors and customers. In the US, support for CPV has been far from overwhelming, sustained and unanimous – so far. These issues are vital to CPV’s future, but by no means insurmountable. The solution is obvious – the industry needs a forum where the sceptics can be convinced, and the fact separated from the fiction.
The next step for CPVThe 3rd Concentrated Photovoltaic Summit USA Conference & Expo is the showcase for one of the most exciting industries in the world – with a show-stopping program demonstrating to those who matter that CPV is not only ready to step up to full market maturity, but that it’s already on its way. Throughout hundreds of hours of research with over 60 key CPV stakeholders it has become clear that the industry is ready to turn words into action and show customers that CPV can deliver in a big way. So in the agenda for this year’s event, we’ve done just that – here, the biggest challenges to market maturity will be addressed, tackled and overcome, as we, the industry, power towards market dominance. Here is a small taster of what you can expect at the summit – all new for this year:
• Blockbuster case studies – a series of detailed presentations from the most important players who are pushing CPV into the mainstream across the globe, featuring amonix, soitec, Isofotón, skyline solar, Cogentrix energy, Zenithsolar, solFocus, solar systems and sunengy. Get the hows, wheres and whys from the pioneers of the industry and start working on your own CPV success story
• project and customer 101 – understand the all-important utility perspective when Kit Carson electric Co-operative and sacramento Municipal utility District take to the stage, and learn to navigate your way through regulation and policy with the help of the solar alliance, California public utilities Commission and the Independent energy producers association
• Money talks, so listen – without investment CPV would be left in the doldrums, so take advantage of a rare opportunity to discuss the financial climate with DBL Investors, Intersouth partners, the westly Group, Vireo energy, the Reznick Group and nRG solar. Hear first-hand what you need to get your project financed right now and take action points back to the office to use tomorrow
• Knowledge is power – an expression particularly true for CPV. With insight from experts at sandia national Laboratories, sunpower, JX Crystals and solarVision Consulting, you will come away from the conference informed with a comprehensive outlook of the industry. Armed with this knowledge you can formulate your next steps in CPV domination!
The quality and success of our previous events is already proven – this is the high-powered meeting place for CPV players to make decisions, build contacts and agree deals. If networking is your primary objective, you will relish having over 20 hours of contact time with the CPV community. To make it even easier for you to talk to the people you want, our online networking tool lets you arrange meetings with other delegates weeks in advance – streamlining your experience.
Join the evolutionThe 3rd Concentrated Photovoltaic Summit USA 2011 is THE conference where the industry lays down a marker in its rapid progression, takes pride in its considerable achievements to date, and sends a message to its customers that it is ready to rise to the top of the renewables industry.
Make sure you are a part of this CPV industry milestone – secure your seat today!
This event WILL sell out – this is the only event on the calendar demonstrating that CPV will soon be Commercial, Proven and Viable
