Welcome to the latest edition of the RSA’s yearly “Educational News”. Last year’s edition gave details of road safety resources for primary and second level schools. It was sent to schools and local clubs and organisations nationwide.

This year’s newsletter reminds you of these resources and highlights new ones. Our resources now include materials for preschools, third level colleges and the community. We have also developed information based publications and high visibility materials that you can order from our website www.rsa.ie

The educational materials described here should already be in schools. We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter and are happy to hear any feedback you may have.

Some programmes require a training course, which will be referenced by this symbol. All training is organised by the RSA and is available free of charge.

Be Safe!For children aged 5-12

‘Be Safe!’ is an activity based resource pack on road safety, fire safety and water safety. It is suitable for children from infants to 6th class.

This pack was developed as part of the SPHE (Social, Personal and Health Education) module ‘Myself’, which addresses Safety and Protection, Personal Safety, Safety Issues and Making Decisions.

Different modules develop themes appropriate for different age groups. The modules build on the information and activities in earlier lessons and help the children to be more safety aware and more responsible citizens.

Within the road safety module, the themes are: walking, cycling and transport.

The Safe Cross CodeFor children aged 4-12

‘The Safe Cross Code’ helps to teach children how to cross the road safely. You can view it online. It includes two short animated clips called ‘Jack’ and ‘Annie’, a ‘Safe Cross Code’ game, and a Safe Cross Code song and dance which is performed by the Safe Cross Code animated characters.

The key message in the campaign is ‘You need the code to cross the road’.

The RSA will distribute ‘The Safe Cross Code’ pack to 3rd class children in October. The pack contains a DVD with the Safe Cross Code Song and Dance, a lyrics poster, dance moves instructions chart, colouring books, pencils, pencil sharpeners and stickers.

Community Road Safety Educational ResourcesThe Road Safety Authority run educational campaigns tailored towards specific groups within the Community based on particular needs.

For adults aged 17-24

Wrecked.ie

This programme targets 17-24 year olds who are a major risk group on Irish roads, being three times more likely to be killed in a collision than the rest of the population. ‘Wrecked.ie’ uses real life stories to tell of the consequences of the many life changing events that happen on today’s roads.

It features a series of vodcasts telling real life stories of reckless driving. The vodcasts are illustrated with high tech animation which demonstrates the key points in each speaker’s testimony. These focus on themes such as driver distraction, drug driving, road user impairment, driving without insurance, modified cars and driving when using a mobile phone. This programme can also be delivered to students participating in FÁS and Youthreach training programmes.

The accompanying guide tells you how to set up a stimulating discussion for each story where the target group has a chance to interact about road safety in an open forum.

The Road Safety Authority run free ‘train the trainer’ sessions on how to deliver this programme. Participants will receive a training pack, DVD and a certificate.

If you would like to take part in this training programme, email [email protected].

Training lasts two hours.

Protecting our community A CALL TO ACTIONThis is an awareness programme on road safety for adults and is based on the Rules of the Road. It is made up of a resource pack and an accompanying DVD. The programme aims to change the attitudes and behaviour of pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers.

Core topics covered include:

• Speed and speeding

• Road user impairment

• Unsafe behaviour towards or by vulnerable road users

• Safety belts, child restraints and safety on buses

• The emergency services.

Topics are presented as thirty minute ‘session plans’, ideal for community groups and are highly interactive and activity based.

The Road Safety Authority run free ‘train the trainer’ sessions on how to deliver this programme with people who work with community groups in a professional or a voluntary capacity. Trainees should have facilitation experience and should have identified a group they wish to deliver this training to. Participants will receive a training pack, DVD and a certificate.

If you wish to take part in this training programme, email [email protected]. The training (5 hours) usually takes place over two evenings to facilitate volunteers but other arrangements can be made for individual cases.

The RSA and Setanta Insurance are looking for budding filmmakers between the ages of 15-25 years to enter their national road safety competition, ‘Keep Drama Off the Roads’. There is a different theme each year which focuses on the killer behaviours which contribute to dangerous driving among young people.

The judging panel will choose one entry that best meets the competition brief. The winner of the ‘Keep Drama Off the Roads’ gets €3,000 and the opportunity to turn their film concept into a film with the help of a professional film production team.

The winning film may also be shown on the RSA website, the Setanta Insurance website (www.setantainsurance.com) and the Keep Drama Off the Roads website (www.keepdramaofftheroads.ie). Runner-up prizes will also be awarded.

Road Safety

Roadshows

The RSA Check it Fits Roadshow will be travelling all over Ireland, checking child car seats for free everywhere it goes.

The Roadshow aims to save lives by ensuring that child car seats are properly fitted in cars. Three out of four child car seats are incorrectly fitted in cars and this could lead to serious injury or death if there was a collision.

To address this problem, we use experts who are familiar with almost every child car seat on the market to check car seats and answer any questions you may have at our free ‘Check it Fits’ Roadshow.

If you would like to see when the Check it Fits Roadshow will be in your area or to book it, please visit www.rsa.ie/checkitfits for further information.

For children aged 4-12

‘Streetsmart’ aims to bring road safety to life in a fun way for young school children. It uses a ‘Streetscape’ mat which has a typical street scene. ‘StreetSmart’ is designed for children aged between 4 and 12 years.

Children are taught how to use the road safely. The Streetscape mat can be set up in the school hall. Our staff will link in with teachers beforehand to decide suitable activities to offer to students. Children can also participate in a range of activities such as storytelling, road safety games and an interactive road safety question and answer session. Teachers and RSA staff facilitate activities and it is great fun.

StreetSmart is available free of charge.

For further information on ‘Streetsmart’ or to request a booking form, e-mail [email protected] or refer to www.rsa.ie/roadsafety/roadsafetyforkids

Roll Over SimulatorHaving attended 88 events in 2012 with over 30,000 experiencing the “Roll Over”, this simulator continues to be very effective in encouraging people to use safety belts.

The simulator is a car fitted to a hydraulic platform. You can sit into the simulator and simulate a half or a full rotation (turn) demonstrating how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision.

The Roll Over Simulator generally appears at events which also host the “Shuttle” but you can book it separately, free of charge, for smaller events subject to availability.

If you require a booking form for the roll over or if you have any questions, please email [email protected]

Road Safety Interactive ShuttleFor all ages

Our road safety “Shuttle” continues to be a popular road safety attraction at schools, festivals, companies, college campuses and so on. It has been in 80 locations in 2012 with about 86,000 visitors improving their road safety knowledge.

The “Shuttle” is a fully interactive, educational road safety experience, which includes a presentation area, motorbike, car and bicycle simulators and concentration games. It also has six computers equipped with mock driving theory tests, interactive games and road safety videos.

If you require a booking form for the Shuttle or if you have any questions, please email [email protected]
