Academic Support

Field Trips
The Academic Support Program is an intervention program which provides small group instruction focusing on reading and writing and/or math. Reading intervention focuses on phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies depending on the needs of the individual student. Writing intervention is naturally embedded into reading with a focus on application of phonics and spelling rules in a small group setting which allows for immediate feedback on the content and mechanics of a student's writing. Math intervention is designed to reinforce concepts being covered in the classroom by allowing extra practice and additional instruction when needed. Academic Support teachers collaborate with classroom teachers to adapt and design instruction for each student's specialized needs. Title I support is available for qualifying students who reside in eligible Kalamazoo School District Title I attendance areas. Title I support is a supplementary program which provides small group or individual instruction focusing on math or reading support.

Students visit the Library Media Center (LMC) on a weekly basis. They learn that the LMC is a place to find information, and are taught to use the online library catalog. Information literacy skills are expanded. Students listen to stories being read aloud and are exposed to a wide variety of picture books and genres. They are encouraged to return to the LMC as often as necessary throughout the week to supplement their reading and research needs.
Spanish is offered twice a week for a half hour each session. During that time, children will be actively engaged in learning Spanish through songs and the use of short stories with visual cues and gestures. The goal of this class is to expose each child to age appropriate vocabulary in Spanish with many opportunities to feel successful in the target language.
