CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEEffective July 1, 2016 Dave Gardner assumed the two year term of Board Chairman.

Becoming Chairman of The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation is both an honor and a challenge. The Foundation has accomplished so much over the past three years but maintaining that momentum will require continued focus and resolve.

First of all, I have some very big shoes to fill. Paul Farineau has been an outstanding Chairman. His passion for the health profession has been unequivocal, perhaps fueled by the fact that he spent so many years as a military nurse. His belief that continuing education is absolutely vital for both existing hospital staff and students graduating from

high school has led to the Foundation establishing one of the premier scholarship programs in the area. Fortunately, we will continue to enjoy Paul’s wise counsel as a member of the Board.

My new job will be made much easier since we already have an outstanding team in place. As Vice Chairman since the Foundation Board was first formed, I have been able to work closely with Dick Campbell and his staff and know how dedicated they are to our mission. I look forward to that continued close relationship.

Equally important to the continued success of the Foundation is our strong Board of Directors. Ours is truly a working Board. Each member is tasked with specific areas of responsibility such as patient care, logistics, auxiliary, personnel and others. I’m particularly pleased that Board Member Betty Greer, who has a wide ranging international resume, has agreed to assume the Vice Chairperson’s position. Finding new board members with a strong commitment to the future of the hospital will remain a priority. One of my first actions as Chairman will be to propose the establishment of an endowment for the Foundation.

Rest assured that the TVRH Auxiliary Foundation Board will support our volunteers in every manner pos-sible. Finally, the key to the Foundation’s success going forward rests with our donors. Our challenge is to make certain our donors, are educated on the current activities within the hospital and Foundation.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

For the past three years, Paul Farineau has tirelessly served on The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation Board, as one of the first board members, and for the past year and a half, has filled the Board Chairman position. Under his leadership and oversight, the Foundation has grown from an all-volunteer group to a full-fledged non-profit organization.

Paul has worked steadfastly to help the Foundation achieve its current level of success. He is the architect of the Foundation’s robust Scholarship Program which in its first year

bestowed scholarships to nine area high school students and 15 hospital team members who are pursuing careers in the healthcare industry. This year those scholarships totaled over $98,000.

With his Chairman position fulfilled, we are delighted that Paul will remain an active member of the Board and will assume the responsibility as chair of the Patient Care Committee.

Because of Paul’s leadership our Foundation has a large footprint within our community and is well received by our residents, as well as local businesses. Thanks, Paul.

YE OLDE THRIFT SHOPPE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF EXPANSIONYe Olde Thrift Shoppe celebrated the first anniversary of its expansion into two buildings on Friday, June 10, 2016 with a picnic. A special thank you to the Insight Credit Union’s “Insight Inspire” team who donated not only their time but also the grill, hot dogs, hamburgers, condiments, chips and drinks for all the invited volunteer guests. Jennifer Rivera, Business Development Director with the Insight Credit Union explained that “this was a wonderful opportunity for our team to align with the TVRH Auxiliary Foundation, an organization with similar values in giving back to the community.”

At the same event, the Insight Credit Union Community Foundation presented a check for $2,000 to be used for the TVRH Auxiliary Foundation Scholarship Program. The scholarship program was created for area high school students as well as hospital employees who are pursuing careers in the healthcare industry [see page 1 of this newsletter]. FLORIDA CANCER SPECIALISTS PARTNERING WITH TVRH

PAUL’S LETTER OF THANKS

GIFT SHOPHospital Gift Shop is scheduled

to reopen on July 1st.

Florida Cancer Specialists, providing world class cancer care with locations throughout Florida including right here in our hometown of The Villages, has graciously partnered with the TVRH Auxiliary Foundation in sponsoring the Celebration Garden located next to The Villages Regional Hospital.

It has been an honor for me to have served as your Chairman for the past year and a half. How fortunate for me to have worked with such a dedicated group of professionals. Board members, our Executive Director, Auxiliary staff and Volunteers all make TVRH Auxiliary Foundation function with precision in support of the hospital staff to provide the highest quality of care to the patients who enter our hospital. Through our fundraising activities we have been able to provide numerous items in support of patient care, comfort for their families, and improved working environment for staff. Just last year I asked our Board to approve $4,000 to award scholarships to two high school students. This year I asked the Board to also approve $25,000 in support of our hospital team members who were pursuing healthcare careers and/or continuing their education. This year we presented nine $8,000 scholarships for high school students who were pursuing degrees in the healthcare field for a total of $72,000. Additionally, we presented 15 scholarships to our hospital staff, for a total of $26,000. Our grand total of $98,000 came from generous donors who are strong supporters of our scholarship program.

How fortunate we are to have over 850 Auxiliary Volunteers who have dedicated their time and talents to provide numerous services to 34 different departments in our hospital. The Auxiliary Volunteer Board has worked tirelessly to coordinate all these activities to improve services to patients and their families.

As I leave my position as Chairman of the Board, I know that our Hospital Auxiliary Foundation will continue to grow as new members bring fresh ideas that support our mission and improve care and services to our patients. This has been a team effort and I couldn’t have had a better group of professionals to work with.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER

“There is no doubt that we continue to have one of the finest and best equipped hospitals in Florida. The recent expansion of The Villages Regional Hospital has positioned us with added capacity and functionality to meet future growth in our communities. However, providing quality care, safety and service to keep our patients healthy relies on our ability to have a steady stream of employees who are qualified, advancing their skills and dedicated to caring for their patients.

With that in mind, my wife, Marie, and I looked at additional ways to give back to the community. The new TVRH Auxiliary Foundation Scholarship Program was a perfect fit for our priorities and wishes. First to provide the opportunity for high school students in our area some funding to ease the financial burden as they pursue their college education toward healthcare careers with the added hope they will join our workforce in the future. Secondly, and more immediately, to provide that little added assistance for current employees to obtain certifications and education to advance their careers within our system, Central Florida Health.Attending the Scholarship Reception and seeing the appreciation on the faces and comments of the recipients was all that was needed to reinforce our decision and satisfaction. We encourage others to join us in these efforts.”-Russ D’Emidio, resident of The Village of Virginia Trace and Board Member and Chair of the Quality, Safety and Service Committee, of Central Florida Health.

“When I heard about The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation’s Scholarship Program, I immediately saw this as an excellent way to expand our existing military scholarship program with Project SOS-Support Our Soldiers, which is designed to provide financial assistance to children of those who served honorably in the US Military to be able to receive a higher education. We now provide funds to the Auxiliary Foundation to be used to assist children of our military who are seeking professions in the healthcare industry. In addition, we are also assisting hospital team members who served in the military to improve their opportunities for career expansion by helping to fund training and certification programs. These new programs will not only be of benefit to the recipients, but they will help our local community by expanding the number of healthcare professionals and services.”-Gary Kadow, resident of The Village of Lynnhaven and President, of Project SOS—Support Our Soldiers
