  • 3rd Sunday of Advent December 13, 2020Remember in prayer: Lillian Hemmen, Bernita Lowder, Emmett Schumann, Eileen Barreca, Starla Himebaugh, Carolyn Erickson, Ken Magsamen, Darrell StortzThird Sunday of Advent 1st Reading: IS 61:1-2A, 10-11 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the LORD and a day of vindication by our God. I rejoice heartily in the LORD, in my God is the joy of my soul; for he has clothed me with a robe of salvation and wrapped me in a mantle of justice, like a bridegroom adorned with a diadem, like a bride bedecked with her jewels. As the earth brings forth its plants, and a garden makes its growth spring up, so will the Lord GOD make justice and praise spring up before all the nations. Responsorial Psalm: LK 1:46-48, 49-50, 53-54. R. My soul rejoices in my God. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked upon his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: R. My soul rejoices in my God. the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. R. My soul rejoices in my God. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, R. My soul rejoices in my God. 2nd Reading: 1 THES 5:16-24 Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil. May the God of peace make you perfectly holy and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body, be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will also accomplish it.

Alleluia: IS 61:1 (cited in LK 4:18) R. Alleluia, alleluia. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel: JN 1:6-8, 19-28 A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to testify to the light. And this is the testimony of John. When the Jews from Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to him to ask him, “Who are you?” He admitted and did not deny it, but admitted, “I am not the Christ.” So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” So they said to him, “Who are you, so we can give an answer to those who sent us? What do you have to say for yourself?” He said: “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’” as Isaiah the prophet said.” Some Pharisees were also sent. They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” John answered them, “I baptize with water; but there is one among you whom you do not recognize, the one who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie.” This happened in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.Retirement Fund for Religious “Every dollar makes a difference in covering our expenses”, says a Trappist abbot. Hundreds of US religious communities struggle to provide for aging members because most senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little pay. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious helps these communities bridge the gap offering support for medications, nursing care, and other necessities. Please be generous. The 2021 Calendars donated by Reiff Family Center are now available in the back of both churches and in the cluster office. If you are not attending church at this time and would like to have a calendar mailed to you, please contact Bob Reiff at 319-334-2501 or email/call the cluster office at [email protected]/319-334-7191.

From the Desk of Fr. Beckman: What drives a person to success? What motivates a person to accomplish a certain feat? What jump starts our motors for achievement? What exhilarates us to strive for a destiny? The quest for potential achieve-ment spans the centuries of those who step out of their comfort zones to challenge themselves. The question can be asked in a va-riety of ways, and the answer is a proven 7-step formula of traits that is expressed in at least two ways. Why do we do something? Here is the universal formula expressed in 2-ways: 1. Curiosity, 2. Hope, 3. Passion, 4. Courage, 5. Independence, 6. Self-disci-pline, 7. Perseverance; (OR) 1. Hope, 2. Wisdom/Spirituality, 3. Creativity, 4. Future-mindedness, 5. Courage, 6. Responsibility, 7. Perseverance. The first set is more secularly driven, and the sec-ond set is more spiritually driven. Both speak a truth that can be applied universally to our passions for life. When we apply these traits to our endeavors, we are almost guaranteed success. Put yourself in Jesus’ mission and purpose and reflect on how you see these traits at work in his life and mission. Do you see these traits at work? Pray, also, about your own spiritual journey, or any other pursuit in life that was meaningful to you. Do these princi-ples hold true to your success or failure of the endeavor? They do for many throughout history, and they make a good reflection for our Advent journey. Please discuss them with your family; using examples from famous people who accomplished great things, or from within your own family. May you have a prayerful Advent so that you can have a Merry Christmas! Fr. David

Our Faith School Tuition Organization (STO) Still not sure about this “STO” thing? It’s simple. If you file an Iowa income tax return, your contributions to the Our Faith STO receive a 65% tax credit. That means for every $1000 you donate, you receive an Iowa income tax credit of $650. Thus, a $1000 con-tribution reduces your Iowa tax liability by a whopping $650 AND the gift may qualify as a charitable contribution on your federal in-come tax return. And that gift you made? It helps makes a Catholic education affordable for every child. Thus, a gift that costs you a maximum of $350 provides $1000 in need-based tuition assistance for a family in need of help. Please visit www.ourfaithsto.org or call the Archdiocese of Dubuque at 800-876-3546 ext. 219 to learn more or have questions about this fantastic program.
