Dear friends As we begin October, this issue of Lifeline is accompanied by the new edition of the St Anne’s Magazine, which has been on hold since March. If you receive Lifeline, we have automatically included you in the Magazine distribution list, but if you would prefer not to receive the magazine please do let us know. By the same token, if you are receiving materials in print form but would prefer an electronic version (which saves us some pennies on printing costs), please let us know. The Magazine features some suggestions of ways to engage in prayer. Just as it went to press this week, I attended an online conference at which one of the speakers was the Rev’d Dr Sam Wells, Vicar of St Martin in the Fields in London. He spoke on the Lord’s prayer as a source of encouragement and solace during this year. He wondered how we stop it becoming a prayer we simply say by rote, without appreciating its depths. As it turns out there is already a piece on that in the Magazine! However his take offers a nice contrast to the one there, so I thought I would share it here. He likened the meaning of each of the petitions of the Lord’s prayer to an encouragement. Each one can help us, when we might feel discouraged or down, to recall and trust something concerning God’s character and the hope and promise of the Gospel. Together, they bind up some of the key hopes of the Christian faith. They can be summarised like this: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name… God is with you. Thy Kingdom come... God is coming to you. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven... God will prevail. Give us this day our daily bread... God gives us enough for today. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those God heals the hurts who trespass against us... of yesterday. For thine is the Kingdom the power and the glory… God will be with you forever and ever. whatever happens. Amen. Amen. When we were first required to close the Church building in March, I put posters in our notice boards reminding the community that though the Church building was closed, “Prayer is still on”. That’s as true now as it was then. Christian discipleship is rooted in prayer. From it flows our life as the body of Christ - the local church, human people held together by hope and trust in the transforming love of God. Autumn book group Barbara Brown Taylor’s “An Altar in the World” is an exploration in discovering the sacred in the midst of everyday life. If God is everywhere, then shouldn’t we be able to encounter the Divine in the supermarket, feeding the cat, or even when we’re lost? Brown-Taylor argues that we can, and shows us how.

Come and chat with others about the book on Zoom. The plan is to meet on Zoom on Friday evenings at 7.30pm-8.30pm on October 16th, 23rd, 30th, and November 6t.

To express interest & receive the joining link please drop Diana a note.

ST ANNE’S LIFELINE 4 & 11 OCTOBER 2020

COLLECT Almighty God, you have built your Church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Join us together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may become a holy temple, acceptable to you;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

MATTHEW 9:9-13 “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.” So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.” Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.” When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realised that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.

PSALM 19 antiphon: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies are the work of God’s hands.

The heavens declare the glory of God, and skies are the works of God’s hands. One day tells its tale to another, and one night imparts knowledge to another. Although they have no words or language, and their voices are not heard, Their sound has gone out into all lands, and their message to the ends of the world. In the deep God has set a pavilion for the sun; it comes forth like a bridegroom out of his chamber; it rejoices like a champion to run the course. It goes forth from the uttermost edge of the heavens, and runs about to the edge of it again; nothing is hidden from its burning heat. antiphon The law of God is perfect and renews life; the testimony of God is sure and gives wisdom to the innocent. The statutes of God are just and rejoice the heart; the commandment of God is clear and gives light to the eyes. The fear of God is clean and endures forever; the judgments of God are true and righteousness altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, more than much fine gold, sweeter far than honey, than honey in the comb, antiphon By them also is your servant enlightened, and in keeping them there is great reward. Who can tell how often he offends? Cleanse me from my secret faults. Above all keep your servant from presumptuous sins; let them not get dominion over me; then shall I be whole and sound, and innocent of great offence. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O God, my strength and my redeemer.

ST ANNE’S LIFELINE 4 & 11 OCTOBER 2020

PSALM 106:1-6, 19-23 antiphon: Save us, God, and gather us from the nations. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah

Praise the Lord! O give thanks to God, who is good, for his steadfast mercy endures forever. Who can utter the mighty doings of the Lord, or declare all his praise? Happy are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times. antiphon Remember me, O Lord, with the favour you have for your people, and visit me with your saving help; that I may see the prosperity of your elect and be glad with the gladness of your people, that I may glory with your inheritance. antiphon Both we and our ancestors have sinned; we have committed iniquity, have done wickedly. They made a calf at Horeb and worshiped a cast image. They exchanged the glory of God, for the image of an ox that eats grass. antiphon They forgot God, their Saviour, who had done great things in Egypt, wondrous works in the land of Ham, and awesome deeds by the Red Sea. Therefore he said he would destroy them, had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him, to turn away his wrath from destroying them. antiphon

MATTHEW 22:1-14 Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: 2‘The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. 4Again he sent other slaves, saying, “Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.” 5But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, 6while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them. 7The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. 8Then he said to his slaves, “The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” 10Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 ‘But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, 12and he said to him, “Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?” And he was speechless. 13Then the king said to the attendants, “Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 14For many are called, but few are chosen.’

COLLECT Almighty God, in our baptism you adopted us for your own.

Quicken, we pray, your Spirit within us, that we, being renewed both in body and mind, may worship you in sincerity and truth;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

HYMN The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning, new every morning, Great is thy faithfulness, O Lord, Great is thy faithfulness. - Edith McNeil

COVID rates are increasing Rates of COVID infections are on the rise at present, locally and nationally. Please keep an eye on the news for updated information about restrictions. Restrictions have been tightened since the last edition of Lifeline and more changes are possible. We are asked to consider avoiding unnecessary travel, and to be vigilant about the FACTS guidance.

Protect Scotland App NHS Scotland has produced a free, mobile phone app designed to help us protect each other, reduce the spread of coronavirus and avoid further lockdowns. You can download the app onto your smartphone. It will alert you if you have been in close contact with another app user who tests positive for coronavirus. If you test positive, it can help in determining contacts that you may have otherwise missed while keeping your information private and anonymous. Download the app at https://protect.scot

Test and Protect - Contact Tracing by Phone Test & Protect is Scotland’s approach to implementing the Government’s “test, trace, isolate, support” strategy and breaking the chain of transmission of COVID-19 in the community. If you test positive or have been in close contact with someone else who has tested positive for COVID-19, you may be contacted by phone by a Government Contact Tracer who will enquire whether you have had significant contact with others and may instruct you to self-isolate at home for 14 days. Please be vigilant about possible fraudsters: a government contact tracer will never ask for payment or for bank details.
