FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK This Thursday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a

special feast and holy day of obligation that stems back deep into our history. While the dogmatic teaching wasn't formalized until 1950 by Pope Pius XII, the belief is ancient that Mary's death (often called the "dormition" or "falling asleep") was different than that of any other human being. Since her body bore the Son of God and she remained virtuous and chaste her whole life, it was believed from the early foundations of Christianity that her body was kept from the normal decay of human life and preserved into heaven. In addi-tion to our usual 7:00 AM & 12:10 PM Thursday Masses, we’ll have a 6:00 PM bilingual Mass. All Masses on this special day will be celebrated in honor of our Blessed Mother Mary. I hope all will take advantage of this time to pray and reflect upon her gift in our lives and the gift of the faith tradition we share.

Backing up in the week a bit, there will be a special Interfaith Vigil in Solidarity and Honor offered in front of the Thompson Federal Building on Monday, August 12th at 5:30 PM, for all victims of gun violence, those who were wounded or have died in the 8 mass shootings in the past 12 months. 79 innocent lives have been taken, in addition to the lives of the shooters. The causes vary & are complex, but surely involve hatred, mental illness and extremism. All are welcome to this time of prayer in solidarity with all who are in-jured and have lost loved ones and in demonstration of mutual respect and honor for human life.

Another important vigil will be happening at the end of September into October. 40 Days for Life is a na-tional program that focuses a consistent prayer vigil for 40 days & nights in a concerted effort to end abor-tion. Neville Bonwit is organizing this effort in the area, which will take place near the West End Women’s Medical Group. This is a peaceful, prayerful presence and not intended to be confrontational beyond the prayer itself. All faith communities around the city are invited to participate by committing to a time/day to be present in the vigil at the site. If you are interested in learning more or can help out, please leave your name and contact info in the Parish Office.

Last Sunday afternoon about 20 of us gathered to have a Community Conversation to try to name our shared values and some of the tough issues facing our greater community and nation. I think it was a very worthwhile discussion, helping to identify and share struggles and hopes as well as what we might ask of our elected leaders. These conversations are being held in various faith communities in our area and, I suspect, many of the same issues, struggles and hopes will be identified. I would like to hold another of these conver-sations in Righini Hall next Sunday, August 18th at 1:00 PM. Let me know if you are interested in participat-ing by registering in the Parish Office, please be sure to leave your name and contact info.

I’m happy to introduce James Rizza, our new RCIA Director (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults). James has been a member of the parish for several years and is a Lector at the 7:30 AM Mass. He has a master’s degree in theology from Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology, Seton Hall University, and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the International Theological Institute in Austria. James has directed the RCIA process in the past in other parishes and is excited to be doing so again. Welcome aboard, James! If you or someone you know would like to pursue becoming Catholic or is already baptized Catholic but in need of the other sacraments of initiation (Confirmation or Holy Eucharist) please contact the parish office. The RCIA process will continue in September.

Blessings to All this 19th Week in Ordinary Time!

OFERTORIO 1. Sencillamente hermoso, sencillamente grande.

COMUNIÓN 1 – Ya no eres pan y vino.
