OTTOMAN CULTURE SEMINAR
NMCSU PRESENTS:
MARCH 22, 2018 5:00 PM
4 BANCROFT AVE. CONFERENCE ROOM
Explore the portraits of a number of dragomans in the Venetian
Republic in the late 17th century. Dragomans are cultural
intermediaries who historically occupied the contact zones
where different cultures met and clashed. They are "trans-
imperial" subjects because they straddled political, linguistic
and cultural boundaries between empires, in this case, the
Ottoman Empire and Venice.
Professor Aykut Gurcaglar, Ph.D: Patterns of Patronage: An Istrian Family of Dragomans as Patrons of Arts
Professor Ibrahim Taner Okatan, Ed.D: Importance of Religious Unity and Religious Freedom for the Ottomans and Modern Turkey
The Ottoman Empire consisted of Muslims, Christians, and
Jews. They established a system that granted religious freedom
to each community. What did the Ottomans know that made
them to value and embrace religious unity and freedom? How is
this realm so important for the current era and especially for the
modern Turkey?
Refreshments will be provided.
