Let’s talk about pubs!
Coffee Time
Bars, bars and bars
CBGB, a rock legend
Bye Babilon, bye!
Our dear readers:
You know that our idea is to help you
choosing places to go and have fun, and this
edition we’ll show you Chile and other
countries as contrasts, and we’ll led them
fight for your preferences.
Our first theme will be coffees in Chile
and France. Chile is well known for its
bohemian environment, but fight with
France in that matter… good luck!
The second one will be pubs. The
music that English enjoy it’s not the same
one that Chileans enjoy, and the same with
the food. We’ll make some comparisons
about that.
Finally in bars we’ll put emphasis in
drinks. Chicha and terremoto are super
famous in Chile, so we thought that Irish
beer could be a great opponent.
So, let’s start the party! This is a new
format for us, so we hope to have done well
and you to have some fun reading us and
discovering the world. Keep near pen and a
piece of paper.
Kind regards.
The great thing about this
edition is the contrast between
England and Chile, cot of chichi (a
drink) and empanadas (a piece of
pastry filled with different types of
ingredients, from cheese with
seafood topear or other fruits).
Was a little bit difficult to me to
look for pubs in England, because
there are more than 50.000, but I
selected some for you to imagine
how fun it could be to go there.
The first opponents came from
Chile! :
If you want to have fun for sure,
you have to visit Pub Licity
in Santiago. It has more than one
location, Oeste, El Bosque and La
Florida. Here you have music all
night long, happy hours and
different types of dishes to share.
One of those is Club Licity, which
is contents 12 pieces of bread with
beef and melted cheese; 12 pieces
with ham and melted cheese; all
accompanied with a special
sauce. Also have karaoke
(Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and a
special Happy Autumn hour, with a
50% discount in drinks like piña
colada, tequila sunrise and martini
dry.
Pub
Blue
Is located
Ñuñoa square
and it has its
name in fluorescent blue
writing. It is a spacious place
with a covered terrace all
illuminated with blue shades. The
main genre of music played is
Hispanic – Latin and you can ask
for a tarot cart reading. The
cocktail menu is not broad but the
quality in all of theme is fantastic.
Let’s talk about Pubs!
By Rocío Díaz
One of the most suggested drinks
is Extasis, with lemon Bacardi,
tequila, lime and curacao. The
main course is a share one called
Buenos Aires, which contains
chicken, beef, pork, chorizo,
French fries and pebre. The cool
thing about this dish is that they
present it on fire and also is
plentiful.
And in the other corner we have
the fighters from England! :
The Angel This Victorian master piece
is located in N° 61 St Giles High Street, London. This pub sells beer from £2.85 per bottle and wine from £16.50. You can bring your kids till 5 in the afternoon, and only in the garden. There are some food times: 12 – 15 and 18 – 21 hrs.
Critics say that this is a good place to have a drink in London, which also is cheap and cozy.
Woods
This pub was awarded with
the title of “Wine pub of the year”
in 2011 by The Good Pub Guide, an
English web magazine. The reason
of this honor is its list of about 400
different wines
and 500 more
that are unlisted.
It is located in 4
Bank Square,
Dulverton,
Somerset. In the
garden it has
some picnic sets
and inside it has a beautiful
collection of trophies like antlers,
stuffed birds and salmon rods.
They have cask ales, which means
unfiltered and unpasteurized beer
served from a cask (or barrel). You
can pay the bill with your credit
card and the pets, dogs in this
case, are allowed in anywhere of
the pub.
Now is your turn to judge
which one is better, but in all of
this places you will find plenty of
possibilities for great parties, and,
more important, to spend special
time with friends and family.

When we talk about moments and thoughts we
cannot set aside the literary cafes, cafes in
which never going to miss a good review of our
favorite book or the best sellers of the moment, another interesting point of
these coffees are the interviews with authors, generally are person to person
interviewer or interviewee, and in other meets a certain amount of public
interest to listen to with the book which is talking about.
The beginnings for a literary café is located in the strong ties that are created
between the people involved, since it exposes in some cases the works, their
experiences, their time, their feelings and their plans, with the rest of the
audience.
Well you know that already if you want to know more about an author, share
experiences ,or simply listen to a good review of your favorite book, starts to
search for a literary café, without a doubt you won't regret it, after all that
better company than a good cup of coffee and a good book that comment.
Café des 2 Moulins By Valentina Gálvez
It made known in 2001 when was the recording stage
of the classic French film directed by Jean Pierre
Jenuet, Amelié, in which the main characted, played
by Audrey Tautou who represented a waitress in that
place.
Its name is because the physical closeness with the
Moulin Rouge and Moulin de la Galette.
Nowadays Café des 2 Moulins is a great touristic
attraction and between the visitors is known as the
“Amelié coffee”.

For long time, bars were just a single counter, with no
ambience, just serving a single kind of alcoholic beverage and with a
very restricted clientele. Nowadays, bars just had to adjust to a new
group of consumers: young people, and boy, they just don’t get
satisfied with the old fashioned bar. To catch new costumers, bars
had to reinvent themselves. Now bars don’t just offer alcoholic
drinks, they also have from snacks to dishes. Now even the humblest
of bars offer something to eat to their customers.
Bars also have renewed the ambience of the place. People just
don’t seek for something to drink, but also certain conditions
aesthetic conditions. From a quiet, soothing ambient great for a nice
chat to a more cheerful, music blasting place to celebrate special
occasions.
From all the new details, one of the most important, for yours
truly, is the furniture. Bars’ main characteristic was the very thing
that gave them their name, the long counter. Now, while most of bars
kept the traditional counter, most brought couches and sofas, creating
a closer, warm and friendly ambience.
We kindly invite you to check some of our proposals to spend
an incredible time during your trip at Dublin, Ireland or Santiago de
Chile. Besides the general characteristics that both Irish and Chilean
bars have, they possess their own cultural attach, so if you’re
planning to know this people’s identity by spending time right next
to it, this is your chance!
Sushi-bar Baires, Santiago de Chile
By Juan Pablo Espinoza
At the historical
barrio Brasil in
Santiago’s center,
there’s a stylish bar
with a relatively new
proposal. Sushi has
become more and
more popular and bars
suddenly started
adopting Japanese
cuisine largely due to
its apparent simplicity
but growing
popularity among
young people. The bar
offers as his main dish
several six or eight
units sushi rolls,
whose main
ingredients vary from
salmon, shrimp and
avocado, among
others. The bar also
possesses a long list of
alcoholic drinks,
including national
handcrafted beers.
The place plays
between black and
white. While the walls
are totally white, the
furniture, chairs, tables
and couches are all
deep black. This place
has a very modern
ambience noticeable
from its front door. It
has a great feature: A
large palm tree grows
from the 1st floor and
reaches to the 2nd floor,
just in front of the bar.
This place is
extremely
recommended if you
expect to spend a time
with friends while
tasting the wonders of
eastern cuisine. It is a
chatty place after all, if
you look for a quieter
place, better seek
another thing, because
young people run this
place up!
The Clinic Bar, Santiago de Chile By Juan Pablo Espinoza
Based on a satirical Chilean
magazine, comes the Clinic bar. An
old lovely colonial building houses
the bar located in Barrio Bellas Artes
in Santiago, Chile. At the bar we can
find a neat bohemian ambience
weirdly mixed with traditional
“huachaca”-like ambience. Also,
several articles and pages from the
magazine are framed and hanged on
the wall for everyone to have a good
laugh with the well-known The
Clinic’s acid jokes. Even though it’s a
bar, The Clinic offers a variety of
typical hot and cold dishes with witty
and funny names. They also offer
several alcoholic and non-alcoholic
beverages, but their strength relies in
their selection of wines. If you seek
for a good evening with friends or
with your couple, accompanied with
good laughs (Even the waiters have
some witty puns and jokes for you).
It’s not recommended if you don’t
like that kind of humor though.
Grogan’s castle lounge, Dublin, Ireland: By Valentina Gálvez
Ireland sure has a thing for
drinking, so, when time comes to look
for bars in Dublin, we are certainly in
presence of a long list of potential
candidates. We have chosen one
located in Dublin’s shopping district.
Grogan’s Castle Lounge is a little
strong red-painted building. It
displays at the banner how old it’s the
bar; Established in 1899! In the inside,
the bar actually looks like a lounge, it
has large couches and several
paintings and pictures hanging on the
walls, a real warm, quiet, traditional
place. Although it’s not really
frequented too much by tourists, The
Grogan’s Castle Lounge truly
represents the Irish culture, so, if
you’re seeking to know the real deal,
rather than the weak tourist
alternative all the agencies offer you,
better think it twice and pay a visit to
this place!

“We’ve lost Janick. As you may
have gathered from what you’ve seen
so far, Janick’s a little bit of a lone
solder. He runs off and disappears and
does his own thing. Normally you find
him in an Irish bar somewhere. As
there’s no Irish bar here, he’s decided
to go off on his own anyway”. Some
words of Nicko McBrain, drummer of
Iron Maiden, to refer about Janick Gers,
Guitarist of the same band in the
documentary Flight 666.
The Gers’ passion about the Irish
bars is well known, is enough to look
for some pictures in internet, in which
you can see this guitarist having fun in
some bar. He assumes this fondness
also adds that far for being an Irish
beer lover, he is into the music and
culture of this country, and this reasons
make Irish bars right places for him to
pass a great moment with he’s friends.

The Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, among
others, were some of the artists who started their
musical career at CBGB, in number 315, Browery,
between the 1° and the 2°, Lower East Side,
Manhattan. It was closed in 2006, when its owner felt
overwhelmed by debts and the poor usage of the place
(the second floor of the building was used as a refuge
for the homeless, sometimes sheltering more than 175
people in one single night.)
Six years later, CBGB remains as a legendary
place just like in its active years. It is not unusual to see
some rock lover in the street wearing a shirt with the
logo of the place, or some people talking about abour
the CBGB Festival, which started many years ago,
having the best rock icons in its lineup. In fact, it is not a
crazy idea to imagine a movie about the amazing
events that took place there.
The closure was filled with spectacular musical
events. Blondie lead singer, Debbie Harry and Patti
Smith were in charge of the show. The band played
“Gloria” at the end of the show, mixed with some riffs of
the mythical “Blitzkrieg Bop” of The Ramones.

Did you know…?
Andy Warhol was a frequent client.
A movie about CBGB is planned,
and that will be starring Alan
Rickman and famous actor Rupert
Grint.
Bye Babilon, bye! By Valentina Gálvez
Some weeks ago, La Florida
town was the farewell scenario of one
of the most rock charged places in
the Santiago’s south zone: Babilon
Club.
Because the constant
neighbors’ complaints, who argue for
the loud noise, the authorities decided
to close and then to demolish it.
The ferwell was at the regular
time, started at 15 hrs. with an all-
ages show, with metal and tribute
bands to Iron Maiden, Megadeth,
emphasizing these between others of
the same genre. The night show was
divided in two days, being the first
one a Grunge tribute, which had the
participation of Piedra Negra, a
tribute band to Pearl Jam, nationally
recognized for having as vocalist the
“Mi nombre es” program winner
Javier Díaz. The second night had as
guest national bands like Los Mox!
And Chernobyll.
Is necessary emphasizing the
nostalgic atmosphere that flooded the
place, because the it was well known
that this place would never be seen
again, and would never present a
rock show again like in its best times,
that never would be seen again those
long lines of teenagers waiting for get
in the all-ages show, to which I also
attended many times.
Goodbye and thank you,
Babilon Club, for those music hours,
which we will relive soon in Pantano
Rock, located a few blocks from the
now demolished Babilon and which
opens soon.
