BEAM BROUGHT TO DAMPING RING

The photograph on the cover marks the successfulconclusion of one of the very important steps towardbuilding the SLC, bringing an electron beam from thelinac through the new beamline leading to the dampingring.

The damping ring is in a concrete vault buried atthe south side of the linac near the injector. The ringitself is much like SPEAR but about one seventh thesize. Together with the two transport lines, however, the system is comparable to that venerable storage ring. For SLC operation there will be a nearly identical sys-tem stacked on the first for damping positrons.

The electron and positron beams produced by theinjector and positron source (another story) are quitefat and could not be focused down into the tiny spotneeded at the final collision. It is the job of the dampingrings to squeeze them down. This "damping" is one ofthe happy accidents of storage rings and is due to theradiation of small amounts of energy from the particlesas they are bent around in the magnetic field.

The next step will be to inject the electron beaminto the damping ring and store it. The ring was closedup around Christmas with all systems installed and aring pressure of 3 X 10 - 7. Power supply work for themagnets is scheduled for the first week of January, withtesting and checkout to follow.

FIRST SLC DETECTOR

After a careful review of three proposals thelaboratory has selected the Mark II detector as the basisfor a final proposal for the first detector at the SLC.The guidelines required a detector which would be fullyproven and ready for physics by the time the SLC turnson in late '86. The Mark II is certainly that- it hasrun at SPEAR and has been running at PEP since thebeginning of that program.

The proponents have proposed two importantupgrades to the detector: a new drift chamber forcharged particle tracking and new shower counters forthe endcaps. These changes would be made early andfully tested while the Mark II is still at PEP.

The collaboration now consists of three SLACgroups, a similar contingent from Lawrence BerkeleyLaboratory (LBL), and physicists from Caltech,Michigan, UC Santa Cruz, and the University ofHawaii.

The laboratory has now requested letters of in-tent for a second SLC detector for review by theExperimental Program Advisory Committee (EPAC) inMay.

QUIT SMOKING!

The SLAC Medical Department is sponsoring aQUIT SMOKING program starting Tuesday, January18. The program will be run by the Stanford HIPGroup (Health Improvement Program). There will beeight sessions, Tuesdays and Thursday at lunchtime(11:30 to 1pm). The cost is $30. Sessions will be inthe Yellow Room of the A&E Building.

It hardly seems necessary to remind an intelligentgroup of people such as SLAC employees of the dangersof cigarette smoking: coronary artery and heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, peptic ulcer, and frequentrespiratory infections. There are also other more per-sonal reasons to stop smoking: fresher breath, cleanerpersonal habits, a better singing voice-try and thinkup more of your own and I'm sure you'll come up withsome good ones. It is hard to stop and there is no easyway, but 29 million smokers have quit since 1964. Weare here to help you to quit and get you over the roughspots.

Nicotine is addicting. Withdrawal symptoms aremost prominent in the first few days after stoppingsmoking. Cutting down or use of "less harmful" lowtar cigarettes is not enough. Most smokers will justsmoke more of these to maintain the level of nicotinethey are used to.

After the nicotine addiction is over, there may bea period of secondary withdrawal symptoms of severalforms. Most methods of quitting smoking deal with thisperiod and with a change of behavior patterns, includ-ing aversive conditioning, rapid smoking, stimulus con-trol, hypnosis, relaxation training, and other commer-cial programs. By and large the most successful pro-grams do not use scare tactics or oppressive regimens. They give information, reinforce positive behavior, andoffer group support.

The best programs are those that operate over along period of time. It helps to have had unequivo-cal medical advice to stop and to continue to see yourphysician after stopping to stay stopped. Some sugges-tions: set a date to quit; make a list of places and cir-cumstances associated with smoking and make plansto avoid them; get rid of tobacco products, lighters, and other paraphernalia; make a contract with someonefor quitting and plan rewards for yourself when yousucceed; try to quit "cold turkey". Remember thatwithdrawal symptoms will be transient; exercise to min-imize craving for cigarettes and weight gain; spendmore time with non-smoking friends. Join the HIP pro-gram January 18 and stick to the rules. No cheating!

Good luck and Happy New Year.-Madlyn Stein, M.D.

(Dr. Stein's hours in attendance at SLAC are:Monday and Wednesday all day, and Thursday, 1-5pm.)

instituted. Many applications were received andreviewed, and several applicants were interviewed. Theoutcome was that Jim Pardoe was selected as bestqualified. Therefore, effective January 1, 1983, he be-came the Accounting Officer succeeding Walt.

Jim is one of those rare native Californians (notquite a 49er). After his stint in the Army he attendedthe University of San Francisco and received his B.S.degree in Business Administration. He spent more thana decade working in the accounting profession withseveral firms in San Francisco.

Jim joined SLAC in 1962 and became the AssistantAccounting Officer in 1968. He has a wealth of ex-perience working on all accounting aspects of SLAC.Over the years he has had the opportunity of workingfirsthand with, and is well-known to, most of you. Weall welcome Jim to his new responsibility.

Accounting Officer Succession

Walt Messing Retires

Walt indicated his desire to seek other pleasures byannouncing his retirement effective December 31, 1982.Walt's career in accounting started with a Bachelor'sdegree from the University of Washington. He later ob-tained an LL.B from the University of San Francisco. In 1962, after 15 years with the AEC in professionalaccounting and auditing jobs, he joined SLAC. He be-came the Accounting Officer in 1965. Since then he hasquietly and efficiently run the Accounting departmentseeing to it that all the numbers are correctly reported.

At his retirement party, Walt presented anelaborate plan of utilizing his large collection of saws onvarious home projects now that he doesn't have to payattention to the monthly cutoffs at SLAC. It has beena pleasure to work with Walt and we wish him and hiswife, Eileen, a very enjoyable retirement. Naturally,we hope that from time to time he will return to SLACfor a visit and to get a respite from the rigors of retire-ment.

Jim Pardoe Ascends

Since Walt could not be prevailed upon to stayanother 20 years, a search for his replacement was
