The Virtual School

It’s 8.28 in the morning. School begins in two minutes but Patsy Miller is still wearing her

pyjamas. Patsy won’t be late for school because she doesn’t need to get dressed or even

leave her house. She just needs to turn on her computer to get to school. Patsy is a student

at the new Virtual School in New Mexico, in the United States. This is an on-line school and

the students do all their schoolwork and their homework online!

At the beginning of each school day, the students log onto their computers in order to get into

their virtual classrooms. A virtual classroom is a private on-line space on the Internet.

Students and teachers communicate online in private chat rooms. Students e-mail their

homework to their teachers and they do all their tests online.

Patsy thinks it’s a great way to study but she is a very sporty, outgoing person and she

misses playing sport with her friends at school. She also feels chatting online isn’t the same

as hanging out with friends.

The Cardiff Giant

Do you believe in giants? In 1869, workmen were digging a hole on William Newell’s farm

when suddenly they found a fossilised (stone) man. He was three metres tall. Overnight, the

“man” became a celebrity. People called him the Cardiff Giant because the workmen found

him in Cardiff, New York.

Thousands of people came to Newell’s farm to see the giant. They paid Newell 50 cents to

see him. Some people believed he was once a real man and others thought it was a hoax.

Then on 10th December, 1869, a businessman called George Hull announced that the

Cardiff Giant was just a hoax. Hull and Newell planned the hoax together. Hull paid an artist

to make the statue of the giant. Newell buried the statue on his land and planned for the

workmen to find it. Hull did it because he wanted to prove that Americans believe anything.

You can still see the Cardiff Giant today. The statue is at the Farmers’ Museum in

Cooperstown, New York.

An Interesting Job

Interviewer: Hi, Victor. We’ve heard that you’ve got a very interesting job. Can you tell us about it?

Victor: Well, I work for a snack company. I’ve been there for three years and I love

it.

Interviewer: Sounds like fun! What exactly do you do?

Victor: My job is to create original sweet snacks. I think of ideas for new snacks and

then I test them. It’s great. My work day is from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and

during that time, I try about 14 different kinds of chocolates and sweets to

make sure they are just right. That’s the fun part of my job.

Interviewer: So what isn’t fun?

Victor: Well, when I’m not tasting food, I’m in the office on the phone. Also, the

company’s busiest time is during the holidays because during holiday time,

people have parties and buy snacks. So when people are out enjoying

themselves, I’m usually at work.

Interviewer: That’s a shame. But do you ever get tired of eating chocolate and sweets?

Victor: No, so far I haven’t. I’m just happy knowing I’m creating something people

enjoy.

Interviewer: Well, thank you for talking to us and for making things we enjoy eating.

Read Daniel’s blog entry. Then answer the questions.

Hi everyone ,

It’s New Year’s Day, so of course I partied last night and had a great time!

Now it’s time to sit quietly and think about the future. Have you ever

wondered why people make New Year’s resolutions? Well, here’s what I

think.

New Year’s Day is the only holiday celebrating the passing of time and the

hope for a new beginning. So, people look back on their lives and think about

the changes they want to make. So, what am I going to change about my life?

Well, I’m definitely going to get fit. Starting tomorrow, I will be at the gym

every day! That’s a promise. Also, I’m going to save money. I spent too much

money over Christmas. Maybe I’ll also take up a new activity this year. It

could be a great way to meet new friends.

I’m going to sign off now because I need some sleep …

Don’t forget to read my blog again tomorrow.

1 Read the text. Then answer the questions.

Try This!

A woman lives on the twelfth floor. Every morning she takes the lift down and leaves the building. In the evening, she gets into the lift. If there is someone else in the lift or if it is a rainy day, she goes directly back to her floor. Otherwise, she goes to the tenth floor and walks up two flights of stairs to her flat. Why does she do that?

Can’t work it out? Puzzles like these are called “Lateral Thinking Puzzles”. Each puzzle gives you clues, but you

have to use your imagination to fill in the details and complete the story.

Here’s another clue … think short. Does that help? The answer is simple if you think about it logically. The woman

is very short and she cannot reach the 12th floor button. If someone is in the lift, she asks for help. If it is a rainy

day, she can use her umbrella. If not, she can only reach the 10th floor button and has to walk up two floors to get

to her flat. Pretty obvious once you read the answers. Now try another one:

After a car accident, the ambulance brought a man and his son to the hospital. The surgeon looked at the boy and said,” I can’t operate on this boy – he is my son!” How can this be?

1. How does the woman leave the building?

2. What are these puzzles called?

...............................................................................................................

3. Why are these puzzles different from other puzzles?

To: Pete

Hi Pete,

I have to tell you about the cool camera I bought online! I always get the best deals

shopping on the Internet. First, I searched lots of sites to find information about the best

camera. Then I went to different sites and looked for the best price. Did you know there

are special sites for comparing prices?

In the end, I found exactly the camera I wanted for only 150 euros and I bought it! It’s

great and it was really cheap! It’s in the post now. I’ll send you photos when I get it.

Write soon.

Hi Andy,

I’m glad you got the camera you wanted, but I don’t like shopping online. I’ve heard of lots of

problems – many people don’t receive the things they order. You were lucky.

I enjoy going shopping in real shops. Maybe it costs more, but at least you can go back to the

shop when there are problems. Internet shopping just isn’t for me!

I can’t wait to see your photos. Let’s meet on Friday night. Maybe we can see a film or go to the

shopping centre.

Cyber Spanglish

Has anyone ever asked you whether you spoke Cyber Spanglish? If you lived in Latin

America and you used the Internet, the answer would probably be yes.

In an article for a scientific journal, researcher Margaret Everett said that Latin America was

one of the fastest growth areas of Internet use in the world. In fact, Internet use is growing so

quickly that the Spanish language hasn’t been able to keep up. Since there are many Internet

terms that are almost impossible to explain in Spanish, the Spanish-speaking Internet

community has created a new “language” that is a combination of Spanish and English –

Cyber Spanglish.

How does it work? Cyber Spanglish uses English words but it keeps Spanish word order,

verb endings and pronunciation. For example, people say emailear instead of enviar por

correo electrónico and cliquear instead of pulsar en alguno de los botones del ratón de un

ordenador. While these might look like nothing more than misspelled English words, experts

have compared Cyber Spanglish to the introduction of French words into the English

language after the Norman conquest of England. Are they right, or will Cyber Spanglish

disappear one day? Keeping surfing el Web and you’ll find out!

T F

1. More and more people are using the Internet in Latin America.

2. There are Spanish words for all Internet terms.

3. The Spanish-speaking Internet community invented new words to use on the Internet.

4. Cyber Spanglish uses English pronunciation.

5. Some experts think that Cyber Spanglish will change the Spanish language forever.

Strange Clouds

Did you know that many unexplained things happen in the sky that aren’t connected to

UFOs? For hundreds of years, people from all over the world have reported seeing strange

clouds that often do strange and frightening things.

For example, one summer morning in 1975, Tom D’Ercole, a school science teacher in

Oyster Bay, Long Island, had a very interesting experience. As he was getting into his car, he

saw a small black cloud floating above his house. He said that the cloud moved and changed

its shape as he watched it. Then it started getting bigger and bigger. D’Ercole was fascinated

and kept watching the cloud. Suddenly, it seemed to breathe in and spit out a stream of

water. The water hit him and his car. Then the spray of water stopped and the cloud

disappeared. To this day, Tom is convinced the cloud attacked him and got him wet on
