Oxford Exchange 4 Higher-level tests 2

This booklet contains a full set of photocopiable test material for use with Oxford Exchange 4. ● ten end-of-unit tests ● three end-of-term tests ● one end-of-year-test

Higher-level tests The higher-level tests evaluate your students’ command of the language covered in Oxford Exchange through more challenging exercises than those contained in the test booklet. You can use them with a whole class where most students are coping well with the Oxford Exchange coursework, or to cater for more able students in mixed-ability groups.

CD-ROM The higher-level tests are also available on CD-ROM so that you can copy the files onto your computer and adapt them to suit the needs of your students.

End-of-unit tests There are ten end-of-unit tests designed to follow the Student’s Book units, and each of them should take 40 minutes to complete. The tests all contain a Vocabulary section (10 marks), and a Grammar section (20 marks), followed by Reading and Writing (5 marks each).

End-of-term and End-of-year tests The end-of-term and end-of-year tests should take about one hour and should be administered at the end of each term. They are divided into four sections: Vocabulary, Grammar, Reading and Writing, and are marked out of a total of 50. End-of-term test 1 is designed to be used after Unit 3, End-of-term test 2 after Unit 7, and End-of-term test 3 after Unit 10.

The end-of-term tests are cumulative – that is, End-of-term test 2 covers language from terms 1 and 2, while End-of-term test 3 covers language from all three terms. You may want to use End-of-term test 3 as a practice test in preparation for the final End-of-year test.

Test summary sheet There is a test summary sheet on page 5 of this booklet, which can be used to keep a record of students’ test results during the year.

Suggestions for using the tests ● Warn students in advance that they will be

having a test and tell them what the test will be covering.

● Students need to develop procedures for revision, so encourage them to look back through their notebooks and to use the Grammar and Vocabulary pages at the back of the Student’s Book. You might also want to discuss the amount of time students should spend revising.

● Before students begin a test, spend a few minutes looking through it with the class and make sure that everyone understands how to do each type of activity.

● Students may need extra paper to carry out the writing tasks.

My friend, Tina, told me about the flat where she used to live. It was on the first floor of an old house in a quiet part of town. The flat had big rooms and a view over a pretty garden. The sitting room was at the front of the house and it had very big windows. It was a lovely, light room but it always felt cold, even when the sun was shining brightly.

That wasn’t the only unusual thing about it. Tina said that there were lots of strange noises in different parts of the flat. YOUR FUTURE IN WORK It’s important to start planning your future when you are still at school.

THINK ABOUT YOUR FUTURE Think about what sort of work you are interested in and where you can use your skills. It’s no good training to be a computer programmer if you hate computers! Lots of people have dream jobs like being a singer or racing driver, but it’s important to be practical. Getting training and opportunities for these jobs can be very difficult. Make a list of three areas of work that interest you and find out as much as you can about each one. Then decide which is best for you.

THINK ABOUT QUALIFICATIONS There are a lot of general qualifications that are useful in all jobs. A good basic education is very important, including Maths, a foreign language, and computer skills. Courses at universities or colleges will give more specific training, but it’s important to choose something that will help you find a job. Interviewers are not always interested in very specialized qualifications.

THINK ABOUT PERSONAL QUALITIES Think about what type of person you are and the qualities you need for your chosen job. It’s a good idea to interview someone in the same job and find out what they are like. Make a list of your good and bad characteristics and try to work on the bad points. Dear Elena

THE FILM INDUSTRY by Clare Harris

In general, films are a very popular form of entertainment. Dramas can show you different countries and how people live. Comedies are great for helping you to relax and forget your problems. Science fiction shows you life in the future. In addition, a lot of jobs are created in the film industry – actors, camera operators, make-up, lighting, music, etc. On the other hand, not all aspects of films are positive. The international film industry is dominated by American film-makers. Most films that are shown in British cinemas are American and smaller independent film companies can’t compete. In addition, US companies use only very popular actors who attract very big cinema audiences. This creates problems for new actors who don’t get opportunities to appear on screen. In conclusion, films can give you information and ideas. They can also help you escape from your ordinary life. On the other hand, there is a danger that all films will become the same if they are imported from the USA. People should watch films made in their own country to help the local industry.

He’s really nice – we never have arguments – but he’s a bit too unemotional for me. He bought me some flowers once, but he hasn’t been very romantic since then. I was never very interested in art at school but I went to an exhibition of local artists last year. My friend had bought two tickets for herself and her brother, but he couldn’t go, so I used his ticket. When my friend and I looked at a list of the exhibits, we saw that there were over one hundred. I thought, ‘Oh no! We are going to be here for hours.’ The exhibits were divided into different rooms and they included sculptures, portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. We walked from room to room for about an hour and then my friend asked for my opinion. I was very bored but I didn’t want to offend her so I said, ‘Oh, it’s fascinating.’ My friend then looked at another painting, so I walked into the next room. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There was a mural which filled the whole wall. The style was abstract, but I could see the main elements of the picture – mountains, a river, tall trees and sunlight. The shapes were simple and the colours were light and delicate. The best thing about the image was its effect – it made me feel completely calm and balanced. I was still looking at the mural when my friend appeared. She thought that it was rather cold and depressing, which I couldn’t understand. People’s reactions to art are a very personal thing, but I’ve visited a lot more exhibitions since I saw my beautiful mural.

ANIMALS OF THE WORLD

If you talk to people about the natural world, most people will say they love animals. But a lot of people don’t realize that many types of animal need protection. The human race doesn’t respect the environment and this puts animals in danger. For example, forests where animals live are being cut down, the seas are being polluted, and animals are being killed for their skins.

ANIMALS AT HOME

Many people have animals at home but this does not mean they look after them well. Parents sometimes buy cats, dogs, and rabbits for their children without explaining what to do with them. It is fashionable to buy exotic pets like snakes and birds, but people can’t provide the right conditions for them, so they suffer.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Save The Animals has worked since 1996 to improve the situation for animals all over the world. We work with local people to protect animal environments, boycott companies who pollute the seas, and campaign against hunting. Last year we sent a petition to the government to stop the import of exotic animals for sale in pet shops.

Dear Sir or Madam

I am writing to complain about your news programme ‘The World Today’, which is shown every weekday at 6.30 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. The programme that was shown on Wednesday 19 July at 6.30 was particularly worrying. I was watching television with my two young children at that time and images of war and children suffering from disease were shown. No warning was given to tell viewers that the content of the film was shocking. Both of my children cried and I had to switch the programme off.


I then watched the later news programme after my children had gone to bed. I was expecting to receive more information on the war situation, but only a brief report was given. Most of the half-hour programme was an interview with a pop star who has recently got engaged to a footballer. I am not interested in this couple and their romance, but it would be better to show these people in your earlier programme when children are watching.

I understand that the news has to show images that are moving or frightening. However, if you don’t inform people of this before you show the report, I will have to stop watching your channel.

We interviewed one hundred teenagers on clothes and image and we got some surprising answers.

Designer clothes Everybody thinks that young people insist on wearing Armani, Gucci and Donna Karan, but only half of our survey said they would like to have more designer labels. Most of them said they had one designer item which they loved to wear, e.g. a pair of trainers, a jacket, or a sweater. They thought that people who wore designer labels from head to toe were unimaginative.

Body shape The media is full of models, but only a few teenagers thought the models had the ‘perfect body’. Most of the teenagers said they were too thin and that they didn’t look healthy. A few individuals said they would like to be taller or slimmer themselves. Everybody in the survey knew about the dangers of anorexia and bulimia, but nobody said they had suffered from these disorders. Only one or two teenagers would like to have cosmetic surgery to improve their looks.

Body art


There was a mixed response to the questions on body art. Half of the teenagers said they would like to have a tattoo (this included as many girls as boys). Very few were interested in body piercing in the tongue or nose, as they thought it looked ugly and would be painful. (Most of the girls said they had pierced ears, however.) Make-up and contact lenses were considered acceptable ways of improving your image by all teenagers in the survey.

Travel and holidays are changing. In the past, people were happy to spend two weeks on the beach or in a city sightseeing. NICK’S DIARY – 17 JUNE

This is the fourteenth day of our journey and things have been quite difficult. We couldn’t find fresh water or food so we had to walk to the lake to try to get some fish. I’m also having problems with some of my companions. I share a tent with Adam who snores all night and Jim, our guide, is really getting on my nerves. He’s always boasting about his adventures – he said that he walked round the world for charity. That may be true, but he isn’t a very experienced guide. We’ve been lost in the forest so many times!

But I mustn’t complain. We’ve seen so many beautiful sights. Last week was spent in the desert. It was amazing – I had never seen a scorpion until now and it was great to ride a camel again. The forest is incredible too – such a variety of wildlife and plants that I could never see at home. If I had more time, I would stay in this area and explore some more. In two or three days, we’re moving on to the border, where there’s a small town.

Jim said he wanted to go nightclubbing in the town if he could! Why travel to a different continent to do the things you can do at home? For me, travelling is about meeting local people, eating local food and trying to understand a different culture. If there is a club in the town, I won’t go to it …

Today was my last day at school and I felt surprisingly emotional. I didn’t cry but I spent a lot of time hugging my friends and I even kissed a couple of my teachers! The day started with my last English lesson, but I’ll be continuing the subject at university because I want to be a journalist. We studied a poem about a young person looking into the future, which was great fun.

All the lessons that followed were quite relaxed – we spent most of the time chatting and asking questions. Some of the teachers gave us advice and the most important message was to work hard but to have a good time too. One teacher asked about the first thing we wanted to do when we left. My reply was to dye my hair, because it had been completely forbidden at school.

I asked my friends how they felt about the future. Most of them said they were optimistic and felt confident about their plans.
