HOW ABOUT A FLOAT? Exhibits on platforms. That’s the definition of
floats. But more practically, floats are mobile
advertisements - presentations of who you are
and what you are. You can tell “who you are” as
a 4-H Club by building a 4-H float and using it in
a parade. There are parades in many
communities at various times of the year. Will
we see you in one?

HERKIMER COUNTY FAIR Fair time is fast approaching, so here are some
dates to remember. Non-animal exhibits can be
entered at the fair on August 12 from 10 am – 2
pm. If you would like to help out on the day of
judging, please contact the 4-H office. We need
adults to help with registration and evaluating;
and youth to help as assistants.
Any exhibits chosen to go to NYS Fair must
have the exhibit cards filled out and returned to
4-H staff by the end of County Fair August 19th.
If you have an exhibit selected, you will need to
pick up and fill out a NYS Fair “Exhibitor
Information Statement” (EIS) card PRIOR to
picking up your exhibits at the end of the fair.
All exhibits are released to be taken home on
August 20th from 9 am – 11 am. If you have any
exhibits going to State Fair, we’ll be glad to
transport them directly from County Fair to State
Fair. You must bring appropriate packaging for
safely transporting your exhibit (i.e. newsprint or
tissue paper to wrap fragile items, cardboard
boxes to secure them from sliding around in the
vehicle); as well as your completed EIS card.
Leaders and parents, now is the time to assist
your 4-H members in preparing for the County
Fair. An early start will help insure that the Fair is
a positive and fun experience for everyone.
Many last minute problems and disappointments
can be avoided by making plans now. Here is a
checklist of " to dos” to get you started.
Go over the Fair book with your members.
Make sure they have a copy. Read it
together. Plan exhibits they will bring to the
fair; and what preparation the exhibit will
need.
Assist members fill out their entry blank and
exhibit tags COMPLETELY, prior to the fair.
It makes for a much smoother day; and less
stress on everyone if you come with all your
paperwork completed ahead of time.
Explain the conference judging procedure;
the Danish system; and the value of having
exhibits evaluated by a judge.
REMEMBER, it's a well known fact (with
historical basis, ask any old 4-H member) that
those who take an active part in the Fair have
more FUN!!!
4-H CLUB BANNERS DISPLAYED AT HERKIMER COUNTY FAIR
Wouldn’t it be impressive to see each 4-H Club
represented at the Herkimer County Fair with
their own club banner? The 4-H office would like
to invite every club to construct a club banner to
be displayed at the Herkimer County Fair. Let’s
show the general public that 4-H is alive and
well in Herkimer County. If your club does not
have a banner and would like to make one,
please contact Wendy at [email protected] or
866-7920 ext. 236.
4-H PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS AND
MAKE N’ TAKES AT THE
HERKIMER COUNTY FAIR
The 4-H office would like to encourage 4-H clubs
to do a Public Presentation and/or Make ‘N Take
activities at the County Fair August 13-18. Pick
whatever day and time works best for you. We
can help you with ideas and supplies if needed.
The county is sponsoring the “Make ’N Take”
activity of pinecone birdfeeders and Bird Sleuth
activities. Please plan to help showcase 4-H in
the exhibit building by participating in an
interactive opportunity with the general public.
Contact Wendy at [email protected] to reserve
your time.

exhibits with the use of digital cameras. Here
are some 'Tips from Photography Evaluators':

demonstrate good workmanship and use of
materials.
2. Exhibit should be securely mounted on a
sturdy, stiff background.
3. Exhibits may not be framed in commercial
picture frame or glass/acrylic coverings
except in creative framing class (class E-12)

CHOOSE HEALTH June’s Health-H-Challenge:
TRY 2 new Lifetime Sports – activities you can
enjoy now and as you get older!
Why? Being active is important for kids – and
for grown-ups too! Choosing activities that are
fun – and that we can do anytime – means we’re
more likely to be active!
How: Lifetime Activities Your Family Might Try!
Summer is a great time to explore your own back
yard! What lifetime sports can your family try at
or near your home? Think beyond what you’ve
already tried. Consider new opportunities to be
active!
July’s Health-H-Challenge: DRINK LOW-Fat MILK And WATER - Instead Of
Sweetened Drinks!
Why? Keep your bones strong and your body
hydrated! Avoid a lot of sugar -- it fills us up, but
doesn’t give us other nutrients we need!
How: Try these ideas for healthy drinks!
Water with a twist: Add sliced fruit like
pineapple, oranges, apples, berries or whatever
else is in season, to cold water and chill for a hint
of flavor and healthy refreshment without all of
the extra sugar!
Fruit smoothies: Blend skim milk, yogurt and
fresh or frozen fruit together for a tasty, calcium-
rich treat!
Look out for drinks with lots of sugar! If you drink
just one 20 ounce cola (2.5 servings) a day for a
year, that adds up to 32 pounds of sugar! Way
too much!

4-H Connects Kids to Cornell
The Government Intern Program, sponsored by the Herkimer County Legislature and administered by Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development Program of Herkimer County, concluded another successful semester. Ten students from five Herkimer County school districts participated by exploring current issues confronting county government and learning more about the functions of county government through its committee system.
The students included Taylor Moquin, Ilion High School; Lauren Holt and Jordan Levi from Town of Webb; Meghan Moore, Caitlin Briggs, Madeline Gassmann, and Hannah Phillips, Mohawk High School; Clarinda Blais, Herkimer High School; and Devin Bush and Brittany Green, Poland Central School.
The spring session started in March, with four sessions total, to provide students with insight into the legislative process. Students reviewed issues, toured county facilities, interviewed county legislators and attended a county legislature meeting.
The program is designed to increase student awareness of local government by involving youth of Herkimer County through learning by experience. Legislators looked forward to hearing from the students to receive their fresh point of view.
Students heard from guest speakers, got involved in the legislative process, researched topics, and gave presentations as part of the program. Some highlights of this spring were visits from Kathy Stalteri of the Youth Bureau, the P.I.N.S. Unit, Kathleen Farber and Audrey Dunning from the Board of Elections and Judge John Brennan.
At the final session, the student interns staged a simulated legislative mock meeting and provided presentations on current issues confronting county government. Youth thanked all of the participating Herkimer County Legislators for their visits and help in researching topics that made it an engaging experience.

Fifteen students from seven Herkimer County school districts visited Albany, on April 23, as a culmination of the Government Intern Program sponsored by the Herkimer County Legislature and administered by Cornell Cooperative Extension 4-H Youth Development.
The trip was chaperoned by Herkimer County Legislator Helen Rose, Mohawk teacher Karen Guidi, Town of Webb teacher Tim Leach, Cornell Cooperative Extension Intern Kaylyne Edick and 4-H Program Educator Wendy Richardson.
Upon arrival at the state capital, the students visited the Court of Appeals, had a tour of the
Capitol, and were welcomed by Senator James Seward, Assemblyman Marc Butler, Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney and Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi. After having a dialogue regarding current issues confronting Herkimer County and New York State, the group then sat in on the NYS Assembly in session, and were recognized on the floor by the representatives.

available at State Fair. This is a great way for
teens to learn basic job skills, make new friends
and to have a leadership role in 4-H. There are
three different Teen Leader opportunities:
● County Booth – Teens work with activities in your county booth that engage the public. You can organize your own activities, or sign up for selected hands-on activities that have some funding or supplies.
● Teen Evaluators – Teens assist judges with the evaluation of projects in Food, Clothing, Home Environment, Communication and Expressive Arts, Horticulture, Art Objects, Visual Arts & Photography and Science & Technology.
● Teen Leaders – Program – These teens assist with activities in the following areas: GPS/GIS, Press Corps, Shooting Sports, Information Booth, Poultry Science, Horses & Kids Tent, Museum of the Earth, Fashion Revue, Videographer, Robotics, Cynology (Dog), Horse, Horticulture, NASA, Sustainable Energy, and Ag Extravaganza.
Teen Leaders participate during their county’s

Sign up is due by July 15. Contact Wendy
Richardson for more details.
