A profit of over $3,500 was raised for 4-H Council. Rusty Gupton was drawn as the winner of the Henry Goldenboy .22. Please remember that if you did not parcipate in the fundraiser, you will need to make a $25 donaon to the 4-H Council to be eligible to parcipate in the Clark County Fair. Show-Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) SMQA training is required by all 4-H and FFA members in order to be eligible to exhibit food animals at the county fair. Members under the age of 13 must complete two consecuve years of training to be condionally cerfied. An addional year of training is required when members reach the age of 14 to be fully SMQA cerfied. If you need the training and missed your opportunity to aend the face-to-face trainings, you will need to visit hp:// www.agebb.missouri.edu/smqa and complete the training prior to the June 1st deadline, or you will be ineligible to show at the Clark County Fair. State 4-H Congress The Missouri State 4-H Congress will be held May 30-June 1, 2018 for Missouri 4-Her’s ages 14-19. The Missouri State Council plans and implements the event that is held on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. At State Congress, delegates have the opportunity to learn the life skills of a super leader, connect with experts in quality workshops and

have many learning opportunities. Delegates get to experience campus life by staying in residence halls, eating in campus cafeterias and learning in college classrooms. Those attending get to meet other 4-Hers from across the state in a fun-filled atmosphere and even get to help elect regional representatives and state officers. More information can be found at http://4h.missouri.edu/statecongress/main. Registration opens March 1st in 4-H Online and the cost is $225. Registration must be completed by April 15th.

Shooting Sports Safety Class The required 740 Shooting Sports Safety Class has been scheduled for April 28th from 9am-4pm. The location will be announced shortly. Meat for lunch will be provided and all attending are asked to bring a side.

Even if you have already completed the SS740 requirement, we would love for all members enrolled in Shooting Sports to attend for a refresher on the safety with firearms. Parents are asked to stay with their youth for the training, if possible. Just a reminder, if you do not complete the required SS740 training, you will not be eligible to participate in Shooting Sports practices, regardless of discipline.

Clovers Clovers to Logan and Aubree Schlatter for taking their 4-H experience beyond the county lines by attending Teen Conference!

Horse Enrollments Horse enrollment forms have been mailed out to all those enrolled in Horse Riding. These forms must be completed and returned to the Extension Office with a copy of each horse’s registration papers or a color photo for each horse. All horses you may potentially use for your horse riding project must be enrolled and the paperwork and photos must be received in the Extension Office by May 1st.

Sheep/Goat/Swine Weigh-in Sheep/Goat/Swine Weigh-in will be held May 5th from 8-9 am at the Clark County Fairgrounds for all market animals. Each exhibitor may tag/weigh-in up to 4 animals per species at a cost of $3 per tag. Sheep and goats must be tagged and weighed. For swine the tagging and weigh-in is optional, but all market swine must either be tagged at weigh-in or a swine ownership form must be completed with photos attached. Swine that choose not to weigh-in will not be eligible for rate of gain or overall swine awards. Only those market animals weighed-in (or submitted on the ownership form for swine) will be eligible to show as market animals at the Clark County Fair and be eligible for the Livestock Sale. For sheep and goat exhibitors wanting to show market animals at the Missouri State Fair, nose printing will be available following weigh-in (please contact Katie before weigh-in). Swine exhibitors wanting to show barrows at the Missouri State Fair, you will need to contact the Extension Office by April 15th so that we can obtain the DNA cards for you. Cards will cost $3 each and must be returned to the Extension Office by April 23rd.

Show Stock Clinic

A Show Stock Clinic focusing on sheep and goats will be held Saturday April 21, 2018 at the Rockin’ A Arena outside of Palmyra. Registration will be at 8:30 and the clinic will run until noon. Members will discover more about showmanship, daily care, making weight for the county fair, grooming and animal selection. Live animals will be on site for hands-on practice. Participants may bring their own animal, if it is broke to lead. The concession stand will be available for lunch and fitting demonstrations will be provided after lunch. RSVP by April 13th for the early bird registration of $10/youth. Late registration will be $15/youth. National Volunteer Service Week: April 15-21, 2018 Take a moment during this week to remember the many 4-H volunteers that make 4-H a success! A suggestion would be for each 4-H member to send a thank you note to one project leader or their club leader.

National 4-H Day of Service In April, 4-H’ers across the nation will participate as True Leaders in Service in multiple community service projects, culminating in a National 4-H Day of Service on Saturday, April 28, 2018. How will your youth become True Leaders in Service?

Kids and K-9 Camp Join us for a pawsitively great time at the 2018 Missouri State 4-H Kids and K-9 Camp to be held June 7-9th at Camp Cloverpoint. A statewide 4-H camp for dog training, demos, and fun. Come and learn training skills, meet new friends and have fun with your dog. For more information, check out http;//www.4h,missouri.edu/k9camp. The cost for the camp is $175 and registration will run from April 1st to May 1st in 4-H Online.

Missouri Sheep Producers Starter Flock Program

Up to three winners (Missouri 4-H and FFA members eligible) will receive a $600 grant to be used to purchase ewes from a current MSP member and work with this member in a mentoring program. The sheep purchased may be purebred, registered or commercial stock. Applications must be postmarked by May 15th. For all of the details, check-out www.missourisheep.com/youthprograms.htm.

17th Annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parent, volunteers, and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 19, 2018 for the 17th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be taking on the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15pm game. Tickets for the game will be $25 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front. 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus, the Cardinals give-away item for the game is a replica 1968 National League Championship ring. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-a-kind item. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form available through your local Extension Office or on the www.mo4h.missouri.edu website. Orders must be postmarked by April 9th. Tickets usually sell out before the deadline, so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs, and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games. Funds raised through the raffle support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs. 4-H Day with the Cardinals has raised $77,000 to support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs in the first 16 years. Please refer to the order form for complete details.

Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its seventh year! Extension faculty, along with 4-H Volunteers will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth 11-13 years old interested in learning more about public speaking. The Academy will be June 20-21, 2018 and registration is due May 17th. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. The cost is $100.

Summers at Mizzou July 15-19, 2018

How will you spend your summer? Explore campus life and learn about different college majors and career opportunities while having fun. Each camp is limited to 20 participants and is open to different age groups. This year’s offerings include: Scrub-in a Health Career, Robo Palooza, Network Forensics for Hacker Trackers, Dog Days of Summer, Digital Ghost Camp, and Extreme Makeover: Community Edition. Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program

Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program is designed to promote 4-H and 4-H Shooting Sports. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will receive training that will allow them to return to their homes and advocate for the program at the county, regional, and state level. Applicants must be at least 12 years of age by January 1, 2018 to apply. It is recommended that the candidates also have at least one year left in 4-H.

Ambassadors provide public relations support at special events such as donor/sponsor functions and also serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, helping to make 4-H and the 4-H Shooting Sports Programs more visible. The Ambassador’s further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. This program will serve as a gateway to becoming a National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador. August 25-26: Archery NFAA 300 round at Prairie Grove in Columbia. September 8-9: Western Heritage State Shoot in Marshall.

Monthly MOVEment Activity: Take a walk!

Gather up your friends, other 4-Her’s and adults are take a walk. Enjoy the beautiful spring weather while being active. Listen to sounds of nature, notice plants and growing grass, and smell the fresh spring air. That’s it! A simple physical activity!

Clover Kids Corner: Grilled Vegetables

Help children eat healthy vegetables! Asparagus is a vegetable that is in-season during April and May. It is low in calories and is a good source of potassium, fiber, and vitamins B and C. It can be eaten raw or cooked.

Grill a variety of vegetables (asparagus, zucchini, mini carrots, peppers) using the recipe below and allow Clover Kids to sample them.

Supplies: 1 pound fresh vegetables (asparagus, zucchini circles, mini carrots, pepper strips) ¼ cup fat free Italian salad dressing or 4 tablespoons vegetable oil salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1. Wash vegetables. 2. Place the Italian salad dressing or the vegetable oil, salt and

pepper in a large food storage bag. 3. Add the vegetables to the bag and toss to coat them. 4. Place vegetables on a pre-heated indoor, electric grill. If

using an outdoor grill, place vegetables in a foil pan to cook or thread bite size pieces on a skewer.

5. Turn the vegetables each minute. Cook until tender crisp – only a couple of minutes.
