The Montgomery County 4-H

Saddle Club held their meeting

on Monday March 18th. Club member, Mara McKenzie provid-ed a lesson about the Mini Horse and the Saddlebred. “Swayze”, Mara’s miniature horse, was a guest at our meeting. Mara discussed how she uses Swayze as a therapy horse at the local nursing home. Mara plans to show Swayze at the District 1 and State 4H Horse Show this year.

Mara also discussed the Saddlebred horses. She talked about how the tail set is put on the horse; what gaits they have and how they carry their feet. Mara also plans to show in the Saddlebred division in the OI Classes at the 4-H State Horse Show in June. The Club’s next meeting will be Monday 6:30 pm, on April 15th at Anna Hash’s farm.

4-H Achievement Program Announces State Gold Award Winners

4-H encourages young people to set and achieve their goals. To that end, the Kentucky 4-H Achievement Program was created to reward ambitious, accomplished young people throughout the state. In this highly competitive 4-H Achievement Program, young people receive recognition for their accomplishments through their 4-H involvement and their community/school activities. 4-H’ers can ac-cumulate points as soon as they start 4-H and begin earning recog-nition through the 4-H achievement program in the sixth grade.

The State 4-H Gold award can be achieved as soon as the 4-H member has reached the tenth grade in high school. Each district can submit 10 applicants for the gold award. Of the 70 statewide applicants, the top 30 in the state are selected. This select group repre-sents Kentucky at the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta in November. The competitive Gold Achievement program consists of an application and a panel inter-view. After careful review and interview from the judges, two local youth were chosen to be among the select TOP 30 GOLD ACHIEVEMENT. The two were:

Lindsey Blevins and Derek Bailey

Lindsey has been active in 4-H through the 4-H Animal Science project and a member of the 4-H Livestock Club. Derek has been an active member in the 4-H Shooting Sports pro-ject and is a member of the 4-H Shooting Sports Club. As Gold Achievement winners, both receive a full scholarship toward the Kentucky 4-H Teen Conference held at the University of Kentucky campus, June 10 – 13, 2019 along with an $800 scholarship towards attending National 4-H Congress in Atlanta. Also, competing in the 4-H Gold Achievement program was Landon Holley. She will be rec-ognized as Clover Level 5 recipient at 4-H Teen Conference in June.
