Term 4 has started well with students quickly settling into their final period of formal school learning for
2017. Students have reflected on their academic achievements, have set some goals in terms of their
learning and are working their way towards achieving them. This term is like all others in that it is jam
packed with learning opportunities – both within and extra to the curriculum: exams, transition activities,
swimming lessons, camps and End of Year Assemblies are just a few of those, and the term promises to
be a successful one!
Term 4 is our Student Wellbeing and Behaviour Development Policy Trial
As you know school staff and Governing Councillors have been working solidly throughout the year to
revise our Behaviour Policy. In the last few weeks of Term 3, six classes participated in a trial of the policy
with parents, students, and staff providing their views at the end of this trial. We received overwhelming
support with one parent describing it in the following way
“From the outside looking in I would describe it as embedding a new culture of positivity in the school,
acknowledging deficits and providing holistic solutions using robust scientific evidence – this ‘stuff’
works.”
As a result of all feedback we are now trialling the new policy across the whole school this term and
working on documents and communication processes to improve the model further.
Big picture agreements that have been reached to date are:
Policy and practice will aim to understand all behaviours and respond to it in constructive ways
There will be a firm and fair approach when responding to misbehaviours
There will be an emphasis on students taking responsibility for their behaviours and making things right
when needed
Logical consequences will be applied - clear, concise and complementary to restorative work
Students engaging in minor misbehaviours will be supported to get back into their learning as soon as
possible
When students are not able to settle in a reasonable time frame and continue to disrupt the teaching
and learning program or are putting the safety of others at risk, parents will be asked to collect them
immediately
Re-entry to school will happen after a successful restorative conference with the child, their parent /
caregiver, the teacher who witnessed the disruptive or harmful behaviour and other personnel
involved in supporting the child/ young person
This meeting will happen at either 8:15am or 3:15pm to allow all relevant people to attend. (If neither
of these times is possible, we will endeavour to find a mutually convenient time). If families are late to
this meeting the meeting will need to be rescheduled to the next available time slot as it is incredibly
important that all people involved in finding a solution and supporting the child/young person on their
return, are present.
We are pleased with the initial positive impact of the new policy in creating safe, orderly and productive
learning environments and look forward to our continued partnership with families in maintaining this
positive learning environment.
Opinion Surveys
At this time every year parents, students and staff have an opportunity to let the school know what you
like about the school and any opportunities there are for improvement. The link to the survey will be sent
home via text message on Friday the 27th of October. We are asking that you complete the survey online
before Friday the 3rd of October. If you would prefer to complete a paper survey please collect one
from the Front Office Staff. We will then use what you tell us to make decisions about what we need to
continue, stop and start doing.
All the best for a successful Term 4!

MAS Senior School Captains, Tahlia Congdon
and Gracie Steele, had the pleasure of
attending a reception for Secondary School
Student Representatives. The reception was
held at Government House, Adelaide on
Wednesday 20th September from 5:00pm to
6:00pm.
Tahlia and Gracie had the honour of meeting
his Excellency the Governor, The Honourable
Hieu Van Le and his wife Mrs Lan Le.
On Sunday the 10th of September two teams of
students from Moonta Area School competed in
the annual Tournament of Minds (ToM) Challenge
Day held at Flinders University. The students
involved were Olivia Jones, Kloe Appleton,
Ashleigh Mobbs, Sheridan Scott, Ayden Aurisch,
Dexter Goncalves, Claire Ferguson, Matilda
Curruthers-Murray, Lucas Waters and Isaac Johns.
Gabby Fawkes and Bobby Carpenter were also
part of the ToM program, however, they did not
attend the Challenge Day.
ToM is a problem-solving program for multi-aged
teams of students who work together to solve a
demanding, open-ended challenge. The two
teams participated in an unseen, Spontaneous
Challenge. This challenge assessed students’
creativity, problem-solving skills and ability to work
and communicate as a team. All students involved
in this program are to be congratulated on the
level of application and enthusiasm they displayed
during the lead up to and on Tournament Day.
They were great representatives for Moonta Area
School and consistently demonstrated our school
values. I would like to thank all parents involved
with this program for their support.
