CARDINALS AT 4-3-0 AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS IN 2016 Louisville is 4-3-0 against ranked foes this season with home wins over No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 3 Syracuse and No. 16 Virginia, a road win at No. 14 UConn and losses to No. 7 Wake Forest, No. 9 Indiana and No. 16 Kentucky. The Cardinals have one team remaining on their schedule ranked in last week’s NSCAA poll -- No. 3 Clemson. Additionally, Butler has moved to No. 11 overall since drawing with the Cardinals on August 26.

HAYDEN RETURNS TO LOUISVILLE AS ASSISTANT COACH IN 2016 University of Louisville men’s soccer head coach Ken Lolla announced on Wednesday the addition of John Michael Hayden as an assistant coach with the Cardinals. Hayden returns to Louisville, where he was an assistant coach in 2012, after serving as associate head coach at Xavier during the 2015 season. “We are so excited to have John Michael back on our coaching staff,” said Lolla, who is entering his 11th season with the Cardinals. “He has grown to be one of the top young coaches in college soccer. His experience and success as a player and a coach will serve our program well.” In 2015, Hayden helped Xavier compile 12 wins and earn a No. 10 ranking in the NSCAA poll. The Musketeers won at No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 1 Creighton during the fall, widely considered to be the fi rst time any team has knocked off the top two NSCAA-ranked teams on the road in the same season. Hayden joined the Musketeers after spending two successful seasons at Lipscomb, where he helped the Bison to a program-best 12-4-1 record and A-Sun regular season title in 2014. The Bison were 21-13-4 overall during his two years in Nashville, racking up several conference honors in the process. Hayden trained the 2014 A-Sun Defender of the Year, Luke Gearin, and the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, Ivan Al-varado. In 2013, he mentored A-Sun Player of the Year Omar Djabi and assisted A-Sun Coach of the Year Charles Morrow – both program fi rsts for the Bison. Prior to his two years at Lipscomb, Hayden helped lift the Cardinals to a 14-6-1 record, a BIG EAST Red Division regular season championship and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during a highly successful 2012 season. Before his fi rst stint with the Cardinals, Hayden served as Director of Coaching with the Kentucky Fire Juniors USYSA club, obtaining his USSF National “A” coaching license and traveling to Spain with U.S. Soccer as part of a development workshop with the international power-houses FC Barcelona and Real Madrid.

LOUISVILLE MEN’S SOCCER RECOGNIZED AS ACC GAME-CHANGERS Members of the University of Louisville men’s soccer team have been recognized as Atlantic Coast Conference “Game Changers.” The “Game Changers” initiative was introduced last year to recognize and highlight specifi c ACC teams’ involvement with their local communities. “We are pleased to honor this outstanding initiative by one of our member institutions,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “I applaud the Louisville men’s soccer players, coaches and staff for their commitment to what is certainly a terrifi c initiative.” For the last fi ve years, the men’s soccer program at Louisville has teamed up with the special needs community to celebrate life. The team, under the guidance of head coach Ken Lolla, annually hosts a special needs soccer clinic called Kickin’ It With JT & Friends, a service event in the community focused on creating an unforgettable experience for its participants. The clinic has grown over the years, and operates at capacity with 50 participants and over 100 volun-teers. In addition to the clinic, the program has recently formed a partnership with the Churchill School for special needs children, located in the backyard of Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn Stadium. In the spring of 2015, the leadership from the two organizations came together and developed an adapted, soccer-specifi c curriculum for students ages 5 to 21 with special needs. Members of the team and staff volunteered on a weekly basis, implementing the curriculum in a fi ve-week workshop. The workshop included soccer demonstrations and an overview of soccer rules, fundamental skills, and adapted skill drills. The workshop concluded with a modifi ed soccer competition. Throughout the workshop, the soccer players became more adept at working with students who have disabilities and learned how to modify the sport to allow access for students with even the most signifi cant disabilities. The project culminated in the soccer program hosting a fi eld trip for the Churchill School at Lynn Stadium, providing them with a tour, showing highlight videos, and taking them on to the game fi eld to play games and share time together. Many of the members of the school have gone on to attend Kickin’ it with JT & Friends and also attend the home matches to cheer on the team.

After more than a decade of playing in the Cardinal Park Track and Soc-cer Stadium, the University of Louisville men’s and women’s soccer teams have moved into the premiere soccer venue in the country. Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium, a $18.5 million, state-of the-art soc-cer stadium features seating capacity for more than 5,300 and includes a 15,500-square-foot training center. The natural turf fi eld is surrounded by chairback seating for 2,300 in the main grandstand, bleacher seating for 900 in the east end zone and two berms, which can accommodate 2,100. It is the second-largest on-campus facility project the Cardinals have built behind Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium and its subsequent expansion. In addition to the pitch, the complex surrounding the area is fully loaded to ensure Louisville’s student-athletes enjoy their experiences. The building features separate team locker rooms for the men and women in addition to their opponents, along with coaches’ locker rooms. Also, Cardinal student-athletes and coaches will be provided an 830-square-foot meeting/video room for scouting purposes. When Louisville’s student-athletes are practicing or warming up before a match, they can take advantage of an approximately 700-square-foot indoor warm-up area designed to give the Cardinals the maximum space for training. The complex also encompasses training and equipment rooms as well as separate coaching areas, ensuring Louisville’s coaching staffs close proximity to its wealth of resources. For fans entering arguably the best soccer stadium in the country, they are greeted by six ticket windows, staffed by Louisville’s ticket offi ce, to help limit long wait times. Upon gaining admission, fans will be greeted by the main concession stand that features up to 14 queues or they can stroll around the concourse that extends around the end lines and includes room for additional concession stands. Housed atop the grandstand at midfi eld, the press box has ample amounts of room and amenities to accommodate those covering the game. Adjacent to the press box is a donor suite, along with a separate television suite, rooms for home and visiting radio, an area for the media as well as an operations room.

Additional Features:• Spectators’ view from each angle of the fi eld was modeled after Major League Soccer’s Sporting KC’s stadium, which was built in 2011.• Each individual locker - there are 33 total in each locker room - boasts power outlets and the men’s and women’s rooms each will showcase fl at-screen televisions and a Cardinal bird in the ceilings.• For improved security, student-athletes and coaches will have to go through fi nger print access points to gain admission into the facility.• Over 300 feet of dasher boards will be on display along the north side of the pitch.

When it comes to building a soccer program into a national power, head coach Ken Lolla has the Midas touch, making him the perfect fi t when the University of Louisville needed to fi nd a coach that could take a program with no winning tradi-tion and make it into a national contender.

Lolla did that in just two short seasons, turning Louisville into a Top 25 program and earning its fi rst NCAA Tournament bid. And in his fi fth season at Louisville, the Cardinals advanced to the College Cup championship game for the fi rst time in school history. Prior to Lolla’s arrival, the Louisville men’s soccer program had managed just seven winning seasons in 27 years as a varsity program and had never advanced to the NCAA Championship.

In the last six seasons, Lolla has guided Lou-isville to a national runner-up, two more Elite Eight appearances and fi ve total NCAA Championship berths. The 2014 season featured the Cardinals’ debut in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference, where they advanced to the title match of the ACC Championship. The Cardinals entered the NCAA Championship seeded 13th overall and advanced to the round of 16 for the fourth time in the last fi ve seasons. Overall, Louisville advanced to the NCAA Championship for the eighth straight season while also hosting postseason matches for the fi fth straight year.

The Cardinals also led the nation in total at-tendance as 46,433 fans attended the Cardinals’ 13 home matches this season. With an average of 3,572, Louisville ranked second nationally in per match attendance while the season was highlighted by the 7,047 fans for the opening-night victory over Maryland.

Individually, defender Tim Kubel was named 2014 ACC Freshman of the Year while midfi elder Ben Strong and forward Ricardo Velazco earned All-ACC honors during the Cardinals’ inaugural season in the conference. Along with being named as the ACC Freshman of the Year, Kubel was also named to the All-ACC Second Team and was a member of the ACC All-Freshman Team. Strong was selected to the All-ACC First Team, while Velazco was named All-ACC Third Team.

Following the season, senior defender Daniel Keller was selected in the third round of the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by the LA Galaxy. As the 62nd selection overall by the reigning MLS Cup championship winning Galaxy, Keller became the 13th player from the Louisville men’s soccer program to be chosen in the MLS SuperDraft or Supplemental Draft in the last fi ve seasons.

In 2013, the Cardinals won the inaugural Ameri-can Conference regular season championship, hosted an NCAA Championship match for the 10th time and advanced to the second round before fall-ing at Michigan State. Jimmy Ockford was chosen as the AAC Defensive Player of the Year to lead a group of fi ve all-conference selections, including forward Ricardo Velazco and midfi elder Marlon Hair-ston on the fi rst team and midfi elder Andrew Brody and defender Michael DeGraffenreidt on the second team. Both Brody and DeGraffenreidt were also listed on the American Conference All-Rookie Team. The honors continued for Brody, who was named to the Soccer America All-Freshman Second Team and was also a TopDrawerSoccer.com Freshman XI First Team selection.

Following the season, Hairston and Ockford were selected in the 2014 Major League Soccer

LOUISVILLE HEAD COACH KEN LOLLA | 11TH SEASON

SuperDraft continuing a trend for the Cardinals. Hairston was chosen 12th overall by the Colorado Rapids to become fi fth Louisville player drafted in the fi rst round in the last three years, while Ockford went in the second round at No. 21 overall to the Seattle Sounders.

In 2012, the Cardinals won the BIG EAST Red Division for the third time in four years before advancing to the Elite Eight for the second straight season. Following the season, three Cardinals were selected in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Andrew Farrell was the No. 1 overall pick in the draft by New England, while Greg Cochrane signed with the LA Galaxy and Paolo DelPiccolo signed with the Montreal Impact.

In his sixth season Lolla followed up a national championship appearance with another exciting run to the Elite Eight. Lolla set up the toughest schedule in school history to prepare the Cardinals for the postseason and the plan paid off. After struggling early in the year the Cardinals came on strong los-ing just one game from Oct. 22 to Nov. 28.

Once again the Cardinals made another excit-ing run into the NCAA Tournament. Louisville was the No. 12 seed in the tournament and earned a fi rst round bye for the second straight year. The Cardinals defeated Bradley 3-2 in double overtime of the second round before winning at Maryland 4-2. Louisville returned home to face UCLA for the third time in a year’s span and after defeating the Bruins in the fi rst two matchups, the luck ran out as the Cardinals lost 1-0 in double overtime.

While the season had ended, many honors poured in for the Cardinal senior class. Austin Berry was named an All-American for the second straight year. Seniors Berry, Colin Rolfe, Nick DeLeon, Ken-ney Walker and Andre Boudreaux all earned All-BIG EAST honors. Rolfe became the fi rst fi nalist for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award in school history. Berry, DeLeon and Rolfe all earned NSCAA Great Lakes Region honors as well.

School history was made when four Louisville players were selected in the 2012 MLS Super Draft. Three of the four players were selected in the fi rst round with Nick DeLeon leading the way as the No. 7 pick by the DC United.

In his fi fth season, Lolla guided the Cardinals to a school record 20-1-3 record and their fi rst College Cup appearance. Louisville earned its highest rank-ing at No. 1 in most polls heading into the postsea-son. The Cardinals entered their fourth consecutive postseason as the top seed in the NCAA Tourna-ment, marking another fi rst for the Cardinals. Lolla led Louisville to a remarkable NCAA Tournament run that saw the Cardinals draw record crowds of more than 5,000 for every game at Cardinal Park. The Cardinals advanced to their fi rst national champion-ship appearance before losing a heartbreaker to Akron (1-0).

For the second straight season, the Cardinals had two players earn All-American honors. Rolfe was named a consensus fi rst team All-American while Berry earned second team honors. Freshman Dylan Mares was also named a Freshman All-Amer-ican. Rolfe became the fi rst player in school history to be named a Hermann Trophy Finalist, the most prestigious award in collegiate soccer. Lolla earned numerous honors as well, he was named the 2010 NSCAA/Mondo Coach of the Year, Soccer America Coach of the Year and NSCAA Great Lakes Coach of the Year.

Louisville won its second straight BIG EAST Red Division title and captured its fi rst BIG EAST Tournament title in 2010. The Cardinals earned three major BIG EAST awards in the regular season - Berry was named Defender of the Year, Mares was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year and

Lolla and his staff earned Co-BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors. Three Cardinals earned fi rst team All-BIG EAST honors, Rolfe, Berry and DeLeon. Mares earned second team and all-rookie team honors. Walker and Paolo DelPiccolo earned third team honors, making the 2010 squad the most decorated in school history. After winning the BIG EAST Tournament Rolfe was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player and Andre Boudreaux was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player. Berry and JT Murray were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team.

Capping off a record setting season, seniors Murray and Charlie Campbell were drafted in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft. It was the fi rst time in school history that two players were taken in the MLS Draft.

In 2009, Lolla guided the Cardinals to their fi rst BIG EAST title after fi nishing 8-2-1 in the Red Divi-sion. The Cardinals set records in wins and shutouts with 13. The Cardinals also earned their highest ranking at the time at No. 5 in the nation. The Cardinals also advanced to the BIG EAST semifi -nals. Senior Phil Edginton was named BIG EAST Co-Defensive Player of the Year while Lolla and his staff were named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Edginton and Rolfe earned fi rst team All-BIG EAST honors, marking another fi rst in Louisville history. The Cardinals earned their third consecutive NCAA Tournament bid. Edginton and Rolfe earned numerous All-American honors. Rolfe became the fi rst Cardinal to be named a semifi nalist for the Hermann Trophy. DelPiccolo also earned Freshman All-American honors. Topping off an impressive sea-son, Othaniel Yanez was drafted by the Columbus Crew and made the fi nal roster.

In 2008, Lolla guided the Cards to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Louisville pulled off upsets of No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 2 St. John’s in back-to-back games, earning their highest ranking at the time at seventh in the nation. Once again the Cardinals earned a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament and advanced to the quarterfi nals but fell to Notre Dame 1-0 in South Bend. Rolfe earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Year honors while Aaron Clapham and Berry also earned All-BIG EAST honors. The Cardinals then earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, making the fi rst back-to-back appearance in school history. The Cards’ season ended in the fi rst round with a 4-3 overtime loss to Jacksonville.

The Cardinals then tied No. 14 West Virginia in the quarterfi nals and advanced to their fi rst semifi nals on penalty kicks.

The Cardinals fell to BIG EAST champion Connecticut in the semifi nals but earned their fi rst at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Lolla’s squad was not happy just to be there, they were all busi-ness as they defeated No. 20 Duke 1-0 in Cardinal Park. Louisville faced No. 14 Ohio State in the second round in Columbus dropping a 1-0 decision to the Buckeyes to end the most successful season in school history.

In his fi rst season with the Cardinals, Lolla doubled Louisville’s BIG EAST win total from the previous season to fi nish with a 4-5-1 record. The Cardinals also qualifi ed for the BIG EAST Tournament, making its fi rst league tournament appearance in three seasons. The Cardinals made a dramatic improvement at the end of the season. Lolla’s fi rst squad fi nished their last three league games with a perfect record of 1-0-2.

Lolla came to Louisville after guiding Akron to its most successful season in school history with an 18-1-4 record in the 2005 season. Lolla guided the Zips to a fi nal ranking of fi fth in the nation by the NSCAA/adidas poll and at one point in the season the Zips were ranked at the top of the polls.

Lolla guided the Zips to their eighth Mid-American Conference regular season title and their fourth MAC Tournament title. He was named MAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time. The Zips advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight and tied eventual national champion Maryland but in the fi nal outcome fell 4-1 in penalty kicks. Akron also became the only school with two players named fi rst team NSCAA All-Americans and a third player named to the second team.

During the 2002 season, the Zips made their second-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and won their second MAC Tournament championship.

That came after a 2001 season which was marked by several milestones for Lolla and his team. He notched his 100th coaching victory at Akron on Oct. 14, 2001 with a 1-0 win over Wright State. After a 10-6-1 season and second-place fi nishes in the Mid-American Conference regu-lar season standings and tournament, the Zips became the fi rst MAC school to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
