What will yourstory be?

Countless opportunitiesMy career goal has been to take advantage of as many opportunities at the firm as I can. To date, I have completed co-op placements, various Audit roles, and a global secondment in Silicon Valley. I am an Audit Manager, a People Leader, a CPA coordinator, a performance manager, a CPA mentor, and a member of the Recruitment team. I completed my CPA designation and am writing the CFA this year. Throughout each of these endeavors, the firm has provided me with unwavering support and has pushed me to grow both professionally and personally, in ways I could have never imagined.

Global opportunitiesI was given the opportunity to pursue a secondment through KPMG’s Global Opportunities (GO) program to Silicon Valley, California. This incredible opportunity allowed me to experience a new environment with new people, and work on a project that was unique to the United States. The experience not only allowed me to bring my current knowledge to my assignment, but also take away insight in new areas that I hadn’t had much exposure to. It also gave me ample opportunity to explore new areas – including San Francisco and Pebble Beach.

Tax TrekI had the opportunity to partake in the Tax Trek program. This three month rotation gave me the opportunity to explore my underlying interest in tax and further develop my knowledge in an industry that was previously unfamiliar to me. I was immediately exposed to various tax matters spanning from personal tax to that of corporations, partnerships, and trusts. I was also able to expand my network among various groups within the Tax practice. This experience opened my eyes to the seemingly countless opportunities that exist in Tax along with an appreciation for how truly integrated KPMG is between our Tax, Advisory, and Audit practices.

Community leadershipIn the summer I participated in KPMG’s Free the Children trip to Ecuador alongside other colleagues from across Canada. We volunteered in a remote village located in the heart of the Amazon to help construct a health facility for the surrounding community. We also went on hikes through the rainforest, watched performances by local musicians, and tasted traditional cuisine. Whether adjusting my work schedule to accommodate my participation, subsidizing 50% of the fee, or encouraging me to act as an advocate upon my return, KPMG was supportive of my involvement from start to finish.

Executive LookThis exclusive summer conference held in Toronto is the best way to get an inside look at what a career with KPMG may hold. It allowed me to understand the culture of the firm, meet students from across Canada, network with executive and management teams, and solidified my decision to join the firm. Participating in interactive workshops, roundtable discussions, and team building activities, Executive Look was the catalyst for the rest of my professional development.

Global internship programLiving and working in Auckland, New Zealand for one month of my summer internship was an incredible experience. I was given the opportunity to work on six different clients in only four weeks, and explore extraordinary places every weekend. The Global Internship Program not only allowed me to grow as an individual, but as a professional as well.

MentorshipI was first paired with a mentor during my summer internship at KPMG, and since then my mentor has become a great friend who has provided me with much support throughout my career. At KPMG, you can find mentors everywhere, and they are instrumental in driving your career in the direction you want it to go. My passion for mentorship has led me to play an active role in our group mentorship program, where I match new KPMG professionals to a mentor within the firm. KPMG truly cares about my career fulfillment and success, and I am lucky to support something so integral to our culture.

Achieving CPA successKPMG has an exceptional pay it forward culture. At every step of the CPA process I was surrounded by colleagues and mentors who had successfully navigated the program. Their willingness to mark cases and support me along the way was phenomenal. Now, having successfully made it through the process as a National Honour Roll member, I enjoy passing along those same values and will continue to pay it forward to our future students.

Summer internship programAs a summer intern I was treated no different than a full-time employee, and provided with all the tools needed to be successful. From interactive training, organized outings, social events, and professional development sessions, I was able to get to know fellow interns and colleagues in the office and across the country. Being in a rotational program, the internship allowed for flexibility and gave me the opportunity to explore different practice areas and industries, which allowed me to gain a diverse set of learning experiences and acquired knowledge in real-world situations.

National student programsGet involved in the National Campus programs that KPMG offers. I participated in the Ace the Case program, which taught me valuable case analysis and presentation skills. My team won the National Competition which led us to the KPMG International Case Competition (KICC) in Dubai, UAE, where we were also named the Global Champions! I rode camels in the desert, presented business recommendations to international partners, and developed close relationships with people from all around the world. My KPMG network has expanded globally, which will be valuable in the future should I want to work abroad.

KPMG on campusDon’t underestimate the impact of building relationships with potential employers prior to applying for a role. Ensure that you attend as many KPMG events as you can, and network with representatives from all functions to learn about their individual KPMG stories. Networking is the best way for you to get to know the firm, what the culture is like, and also helps the firm get to know you. From my interactions with KPMG on campus, I was able to determine that this was a firm that aligned with my values, and one that I was excited to work for.

AvenuesThe Avenues program is an incredible learning experience where you are continuously faced with new challenges while participating in cross functional activities throughout the firm. I’ve worked on engagements in Audit, Tax, and Advisory, which has given me exposure to a variety of client work and colleagues. I’ve received tremendous support and mentorship through my peer mentors and Development Manager, a role specific to the Avenues program, who has been dedicated to my personal development by providing performance management, timely feedback, and a personalized career path for me.

Campus ambassadorsKPMG Campus Ambassadors are great resources as they’ve been through the recruitment process and have a wealth of knowledge to share what working at KPMG is really like. Don’t limit your networking to the main recruiters, as Ambassadors often share their candidate experiences with them, which can leave an impactful impression for you. It is never too early to reach out to a Campus Ambassador as they are eager to learn about your interests and past experiences, which can really give you the opportunity to set yourself apart.
