Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time A God who judges with leniency and clemency, a Spirit groaning because we know not how to pray, a patient master waiting to separate wheat and weeds, a tiny seed growing into a great bush, and the miracle of yeast and flour! All of these images found in our readings today speak of the unexpected, the countercultural, and of the compassion and intimacy of our relationship with God. Many times we are afraid to come to God in prayer, or we may turn away from our God because of our weakness and sinfulness. We are not presented with a vengeful God who is waiting to smite us, but a God of infinite love and wisdom and patience who will show us the way. What an amazing gift this is!

WE NEED TO GROW We live in an instant world of microwaves and drive-throughs and a disposable society in which things quickly become obsolete, so today’s message is very strange. In all the readings today, and especially in the Gospel, we see transformation, but it is not some-thing that happens overnight, nor does it take place without effort. We are met with parables of a patient and loving God who can see a positive outcome at the end and is willing to wait and nourish us and help us all get there. The sower’s seeds require a growth peri-od and some careful sorting. To make the bread, one must knead it and wait patiently. In planting a mustard seed, something so tiny yields great results, but not until after completing a period of dor-mancy and waiting.

LIVE THE LITURGY—INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Today we are presented with the parable of the weeds and the wheat. We struggle with the imperfection that exists in our world. This imperfection shows itself in human sinfulness with its conse-quences--disease, natural disasters, suffering, and even death. We wonder why God did not simply make everything perfect right from the beginning so that harmony, peace, and tranquility would be the norm. God builds free will into us and into our world so that we can learn to freely love him. Anything less than this would not provide the freedom to choose to acknowledge and develop our relationship with our Creator. For now, the weeds and the wheat must coexist. Our faith teaches us that we live and walk in hope that when the harvest comes only the wheat of God's love will remain.

“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field…He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the

children of the kingdom.” (Matthew 13:24, 37-38)

As children of God, we are all “good seeds.” We are blessed by God with the potential to accomplish much good in the world. We fulfill God’s plan when we spend time in prayer every day, use our skills to help others, and share our financial gifts to help build God’s kingdom on earth. Through our example of gratitude and generosity we sow “good seeds” on earth and ultimately help each other get to Heaven!

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK

Matthew 13:24-43 We hear today a series of parables describing aspects of the kingdom of heaven: the parable of the weeds among the wheat, the parable of the mustard seed, and the parable of the yeast. Which parable do you find useful in more fully understanding the mystery of the kingdom of heaven? Wisdom 12:13, 16-19 According to the Jewish sage who wrote Wisdom, what are some of the attributes of God? Romans 8:26-27 Paul writes of the Spirit aiding us in our weaknesses. In this regard, where do you see the Spirit at work in your life today?

Music Ministry The last several months have been unprecedented for all of us in so many ways. Our daily lives have been turned upside down due to the coronavirus, and our music ministry, too, has been affected. As soon as we entered the period of quarantine, all of our music ministries were sus-pended. Since the Third Sunday of Lent (March 15), we have been celebrating Mass without choirs, cantors, or instrumental-ists. I’ve been leading the music alone, as part of our live stream and now as we begin having public gatherings for Sun-day Mass, I will continue leading the music by myself for the time being. I am grateful for all those who participate in our music ministry, and I am disappointed that we have had to cut our time short this season due to COVID-19. I hope that all who have been faithful members of music ministry for so many years will rejoin when our programs are able to safely resume. So when we will have cantors and choirs back for Sunday Mass? The answer right now, the best I can say is I don’t know. Most of the guidelines that the Church is adhering to right now, strongly discourage choirs. Vigorous singing contrib-utes 6x the amount of aerosol particles in the air, which can very easily spread virus. I’m hopeful as we successfully return to public Mass on Sunday, I can use the cantors and instrumen-talists along with myself to lead music. When we do this, we will do so observing social distancing and other precautions. So we will wait and see, and pray for the best as we resume Sunday Mass. May God bless you and keep you safe.

No estamos solos.

Sunday Gospel Reflection by Bishop Parkes 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Weed Out the Sin in Your Life

One of the things that made Jesus such a good teacher was that He knew His audience, and therefore, He knew how to successfully teach and preach to them. Since society at that time was agrarian, he could use stories related to farming and the land knowing that his audience could relate. This weekend we hear the parable of the good seed from Mat-thew’s Gospel. Unlike last Sunday’s Gospel of the sower and the seed which spoke about God’s Word, today’s parable teaches us about the nature of the Kingdom of God.

One of the lessons of this parable is that it is a reality in the world that good will exist alongside evil. We witness this all the time, particularly during times of national emergen-cy, crisis, or natural disaster. These times tend to bring out the best in people in the way they step up to help their neighbor. But there are also those who take advantage of these circumstances for their own benefit and profit. We might ask, “Why does God allow this to happen?” We remember that God is patient with us, and always calls us to for-giveness and conversion of mind and heart.

What if we make it more personal by looking at our own lives? We are created in the image and likeness of God, and therefore, created good. But we have to be vigilant in making sure that we don’t allow the weeds around us to choke away our goodness. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the company we keep, our friendships, and those we spend time with. We might have to realize that someone is not a good influence in my life, and is not helping me to get to heaven. In the end, God’s justice will prevail, and goodness will triumph. But for now, we need to do our part to promote goodness in the world, even in the midst of the weeds around us.

Some things we can do is to have a good prayer life, to come to Mass on Sunday, go to Confession, read and study scripture on a regular basis, and practice charity. If you do these things, you’ll not only weed out the sin in your life, but you also can bring others to Christ!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The Catholic Church encourages the

“practice of merciful love,” offering as a guide the corporal works of mercy, charita-ble acts for the common good and basic hu-

man welfare. These actions are rooted in our love for the Lord, and as Jesus tells us, knowing that whatever we do for the most vulnerable among us we do for Him. Pantry Hours: Thursday & Friday 9— 11:30 am For assistance Contact (813)949-6094

ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH

If you want to . . . ♦be on a Spiritual Journey ♦be Baptized ♦Join the Church ♦become Catholic ♦receive Communion with your spouse and/or family ♦received Confirmation & Eucharistas a Baptized Catholic

If any of these apply, RCIA is just what you need! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is the process for initi-ating adults into the Sacramental Life of the Catholic Church. It is a process designed for adults who have never been bap-tized or who have been baptized in other Christian faiths who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. The process includes four periods, three major rites:

1. Pre-Catechumenate (Inquiry Process) 2. Catechumenate 3. Full Initiation 4. Mystagogy (Action)

Other rituals also mark a person’s journey toward faith and full initiation into the Catholic Church.

RCIA is Not just for those who want to be Cathol ic . This program is a powerful way to enter into a new lever of learning the True Richness and Teachings of the Catholic Church. If you are already practicing or want to return back to restore your Catholic Faith, the RCIA process can be a great way to restart the fire of the Holy Spirt in your heart. The fullness of Life comes through faith. The relationship you have with your heavenly Father, His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirt is through faith and is given as a free gift from God for those who choose to follow.

If today you hear the voice of GOD, harden not your hearts!

“Inquiry” is a period of spiritual discovery to help an individual understand that the Catholic Faith is a life-long pursuit to build a

MAKING A SPIRITUAL COMMUNION BY FATHER RON AUBIN

If for whatever reason, you are not able to attend Mass and receive Jesus in Holy Communion, then I encourage you to make a spiritual communion, or better yet, make your entire day a spiritual communion with Jesus. There are several web sites, listed below, that explain how to do just that. But my favorite prayer for maintaining a spiritu-al communion with Jesus is the Prayer of Saint Patrick, also known as the Breastplate of Saint Patrick: https://www.ourcatholicprayers.com/st-atricksbreastplate.html I’ve adapted this prayer to suit my own spiritual needs and my version goes something like this:

Christ be with me, within in me, before me, behind me, beneath me, above me.

Christ be on my right, and on my left. Christ be in my heart, in my mind, in my soul, and in every fiber of my

being. Christ be in my thoughts, in my words, and in my actions.

Christ be in my eyes (what I see), my ears (what I hear), on my lips (what I say),

in my hands (what I do) and in my feet (where I go). Christ be in my sleeping, in my waking, and in all my doing.

I love Jesus, be with me today, that I might be with you forever.

Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the hum-ble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee

obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude.

You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a dan-ger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional

boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster.

During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose

wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a

stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

We understand this will be a most distressing time for all families. However we are still called to support the work of our parish and Diocese. So we continue to ask all those who are able to financially support either our Annual Pastoral Appeal or parish offertory, please do so. The need is great. We sincerely thank all those who have gone above and beyond our expecta-tions to support Our Lady of the Rosary Parish!

Saint Michael’s Ministry

We are hoping to reopen our ministry this Fall. We need help for Young Disciples, Edge, and Life Teen. If you have been involved and would like to come back in September, or if you are new and would like to help in some capacity, please send an email to [email protected] or call the office (813) 949-4565. We need volunteers for our SAT (Safety helpers) SRT (Law enforcement and military background) and MRT (Medical and nursing background) to assist with keeping the children on campus safe while they learn about their faith.

The Diocese of St. Petersburg has launched a new website where you can submit a prayer request, sign up to become a prayer partner, and join in praying for the prayer intentions listed on our Prayer Wall. Check it out

It has been a rocky road we’ve all traveled these past months. However, Our Lady of the Rosary is blessed with many very generous parishioners. We truly thank all those who gave above and beyond their normal offertories—and there were many of you who gave an extra $1,000 2,000 even $10,000 to help us. Fr Ron was able to bring most staff back because of your generous response and we thank you. All our bills can be paid and we are able to maintain a high level of cleanliness and sanitation that these times demand. We don’t know what the future will bring, but we know we will get through it with you and Our Lord Jesus! Thank you once again for your generous support of Stewardship at OLOR!
