Helping people help themselves Spindletop Center provides a variety of healthcare services to people with: Mental Illness Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities Chemical Dependency Issues Early Childhood Developmental Delays There are 39 community MH/IDD centers in Texas. The community center system was established after the passage of the Texas Mental Health and Mental Retardation Act of 1965. The purpose of community centers is to provide services to people with MH/ IDD in an effort to allow them to live and work in the community. The center provides services in Jefferson, Orange, Hardin and Chambers counties and serves approximately 8,000 individuals a year. Spindletop employs nearly 500 staffers and is governed by a nine-member board of trustees appointed by the commissioners’ courts in the four-county area. f f Our mission is to promote independence, self-advocacy, and recovery. How we CAn Help

• To receive Center mental health services, adults must be 18 or older and be diagnosed (either through Spindletop or another medical professional) with Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder or Major Depressive Disorder. Spindletop also offers substance abuse treatment services. Children and adolescents must be 3-17 years old and have any of the three aforementioned disorders or emotional/ behavioral problems.

• Services at the Center are also available to persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. These services include community supports, respite, employment assistance, supported employment, vocational training, day habilitation, behavioral support and specialized therapies.

• Children from birth to age three who have developmental delays or serious medical diagnoses that could affect development may qualify for Early Childhood Intervention services.

• General services include: day programs, employment programs, housing assistance, benefits assistance, medication/med management and recreation.
