Post Office, and on the front doors of the school.

New Staff and Events Here at Cambria-Friesland Schools!

When it comes to the inner-workings of a school district the one thing I’ve learned is that change is constant. Nothing is really ever the same one day to the next.

Students may have the same teacher from day to day. Teachers will have the same classes to teach; but nothing is every the same as it was before.

True to that statement, the district is proud and excited to introduce Mrs. Kay Enright as our new 6-12 Interim Principal. Mrs. Enright comes to Cambria-

Friesland with a depth of experience that includes twenty-three years as a Building Principal and School Counselor. Her skills and years in these roles will service the many new initiatives and needs of our district extremely well. Welcome to Cambria-

Friesland Schools Mrs. Enright!

Also, the district has received and accepted the resignation of Mr. Derrick Trentin, our High School Science Teacher. We’ll be moving forward with the search for a new science teacher with the goal of having that person in district by second semester.

To help us in this transition and ensure we continue to provide a quality learning experience for our students, Ms. Joan Arveson and Mr. Anthony Huizenga will be

teaching the high school courses in the interim.

Short-Term Borrowing

The District Just Passed A Referendum….So WHY are You Borrowing Money?

Finally, this past October the Board of Education approved a revolving line of credit

not to exceed $300,000.00 to be drawn by the district only as needed. Some may be asking why the district would need to have a line of credit established, especially

after the successful passage of a $1.4 million referendum in April that inserted an additional $350,000.00 of revenue to the district. As shared at many of the referendum meetings around the district last year, the Wisconsin School Finance

System is both complicated and cumbersome to operate within. The School District of Cambria-Friesland does not receive a large amount of

revenues from the state for the new school year until December. In December we receive what’s known as our Equalized Aid from the State of Wisconsin. In January

the district will receive its first monies from the local municipalities. Until those payments arrive, Cambria-Friesland Schools like many others around the state have to operate and pay its bills from the reserves it has on hand. As you know, one of

the primary reasons we went to referendum was to establish a balanced budget with the hopes of rebuilding revenues lost over the past several years.

The District fell short of meeting its cost/overhead by only several weeks. The revolving line of credit allows for Cambria-Friesland Schools to continue paying its

bills and staff until the first revenues (income) for the 2015-2016 school year arrives this December and January.

PARENT FINANCIAL AID MEETING Wednesday, December 16, 2015

Ms. Laurie Rasmussen Duran from the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) will be presenting a

Parent Financial Aid in-service on Wednesday, December 16th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Fall

River Multi-Purpose Room.

The presentation will include information on the different types of financial aid, how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, and provide a question and answer session

following the presentation. It is estimated that the entire in-service will last approximately 60

minutes.

This session is highly valuable for anyone looking for loans or grants for college. By filling out the

FAFSA form, it opens the door to all that is offered through the federal government. Even if you feel that your family may not qualify for federal grant programs, the FAFSA will still provide unsubsidized

loans at an interest rate that is commonly less than private institutions. It is to each family’s

advantage to complete the FAFSA form.

If you are looking to learn more about the federal grant and loan programs available for your

son/daughter’s post-secondary education, please join us that evening.

College acceptance letters keep rolling in for our seniors! Congratulations to those students, and a reminder to others to continue working on applications and finalizing post-secondary plans. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

In October, juniors and seniors heard a presentation by a representative from UW-Colleges, and we were lucky to have her back again on November 16th. Freshmen and sophomores learned about 2-year UW Colleges and 4-year UW schools. Juniors and seniors learned more details about UW Colleges and the guaranteed transfer program to 4-year UW schools.

Cambria-Friesland parents of high school students are invited to a financial aid night at Fall River High School on Wednesday, December 16th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. to learn about the FAFSA and gain a better understanding of the college financial aid process—or brush up on your knowledge to stay up to date with current admissions information.

To continue helping CF students be college and career ready, Emily from UW Colleges will be back on January 20th for an ACT workshop for sophomores and juniors during the school day. (It’s never too early to start studying!) She will also offer a presentation called “Making College Affordable” for parents and students that evening (Jan. 20th). Look for specific details to come in the announcements and next month’s newsletter.

All juniors will be taking the ACT on March 1st. To accommodate space regulations for the test, we will be testing at Didion in one of their spacious conference rooms. The WorkKeys exam (Part 2 of the ACT) will be taken at school the next day, March 2nd. All juniors must take the ACT. Students not present on March 1st and/or March 2nd will have to retake the exam. There is no cost to families. (However, if your student decides to retake the exam this summer or next year, there is a cost.)

Stay tuned for more information on ACT prep. In the meantime, junior parents: Please visit act.org for many free study resources.

With December fast approaching, so do holiday parties and an opportunity to eat and drink more than we are used to! To maintain weight, an individual must not

take in more calories than are burned. We often think of food, but watching what you drink will also help maintain weight. The calories listed in drinks are visible for all to see. Be aware of serving sizes, because in a typical soda, there is 20oz, but the

calories listed are for 8oz. See the chart below for some suggestions of swapping out high-calorie drinks for healthier, lower calorie options.

decorating contest with her Stitch Mole. Mole Day is celebrated each year on October

23rd and all middle school students decorate a mole in observation of the international

holiday. Congratulations to Alexis J., Myjah D., Lydia H. and Spencer W. for finishing in the top five with their Moles. Great job by all

that participated, very creative Moles this year.

Thanks to the teachers and environmental science students for judging the Moles.

Students Earning College Credit

Fourteen students in Computer Concepts class have earned one Madison College credit for completing a Microsoft Word unit. They are currently working on completing a unit in Microsoft Excel that will earn another credit toward Madison College. During the remainder of the year, students will have the option of completing 3 more credits in Microsoft Access, PowerPoint, and Publisher.

Five students in Accounting 1 can earn four Madison College credits as they complete the 4-credit Accounting Principles class at Cambria-Friesland High School. The cost for these classes is free to students and the credits transfer to some four-year colleges as well.

Field Trip For Food Preparation Students

Students in the CTE/FACS class Food Preparation Skills had the opportunity to visit Alsum’s Produce in Friesland. The unit that the students are investigating is Fruits and Vegetables. While touring the facility, the students learned what happens from ground to consumer. It was fascinating to view all of the latest technology that Alsum’s uses. In class, students will have the chance to discover different methods of cooking used for various vegetables, including those produced and distributed through Alsum’s.

This picture is of a few of the members entering the section of Alsum’s that prepares some of the ready-to-eat products.

Parent & Child Class: Shaken Baby Syndrome Training

Students in Parent and Child participated in the prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome training. This training helps students understand that a crying infant is not trying to be bad for you, but it is the way that infants communicate. There was

discussion about how to handle the frustration that you might have with an infant that will not stop crying. Students were given the assignment of creating an informational brochure on Shaken Baby Syndrome. Here is an example of the

brochure that was created.
