Air Hockey Table Donation The Boys and Girls Club had an Air Hockey Table do-nated last week. The members enjoyed participating in tournaments, and just playing with the table. The new addition to the Games Room helps bring the members together with indoor sports. The Club runs on donations such as this table, and they appreciate the continuous sup-port from the community. Pictured here is Isabelle, the winner of the first tournament!

Eden Elementary Supports our American Legion –

Newell-Faulkner Post 880 In February, Eden Elementary expressed their civic pride by supporting the Newell-Faulkner Post 880 America Le-gion’s fundraising efforts to raise $7,500.00 to replace the flags along Main Street and East Eden Road. Each grade level participated. For a donation, students in grades 3-6 chose to wear pjs/slippers, a hat, red, white, and blue, “dress crazy,” or watch a movie and even enjoy some pop-corn. A grand total of $700.00 was raised and is being donated to the Legion. Thank you to all our generous elementary students, teachers, and staff for participating. As a special note, 5th grade student, Isabella Casolini Dal Bo, is handing the check to our American Legion Honor Guard, and we recognize her efforts to raise $50.00.

COUCH THEATERDVD PREVIEWS

By Sam Struckhoff

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Taken 3” (PG-13) -- For-mer special agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) kicks more butt in his retirement than most spies do during their busy season. When Mills is framed for the mur-der of his ex-wife, he must go on a very “Fugitive”-es-que adventure to clear his name and catch the killer. On his tail is a ruthless law-man (Forest Whitaker), who doesn’t seem too interested in the job. It’s the fi nal installment of this trilogy, although it feels like we’ve seen at least 50 of these movies since the fi rst bullet-riddled car drove through the box offi ce. There’s a lot of movies like this, and this one just doesn’t have the trilogy-ending cal-iber fans want. You could blame the move to PG-13 for watering down the vio-lence, but that doesn’t ac-count for the poor pacing or the overall laziness of the production.

“Like Sunday, Like Rain” (R) -- Living in a Manhat-tan palace that easily could be mistaken for a museum, 12-year-old cello prodi-gy Reggie (Julian Shat-kin) is the picture-perfect precocious child in need of human contact. Eleanor (Leighton Meester) is a doe-eyed, 23-year-old ex-wait-ress beset by drama from a no-good rocker boyfriend (Billie Joe Armstrong, of the band Green Day) and her folks upstate. Reggie’s mom (Debra Messing) hires Eleanor to be Reggie’s new nanny, then promptly disap-pears, leaving the sheltered Reggie in the hands of bare-ly mature Eleanor.

This is one of those slow, somewhat comedic dra-mas that has to pick and choose which cliches to fa-vor. Reggie, for one, is too precocious, too snippy and stiffl y formal -- but he can learn to mellow out from the down-to-earth charms of Eleanor. It’s a heartwarming little tale, assuming the leads don’t annoy you too much before the credits.

“Cake” (R) -- Claire (Jen-nifer Aniston) has been in constant pain since a car accident more than a year ago, and it’s taken its toll on her love life, her career and her personality. Spiraling into prescription abuse and a general feeling of noth-ingness, Claire can’t get over the suicide of one of the women in her chronic pain support group (Anna Kendrick). Clearly, this is heavy drama and a bit of a departure for Aniston, who has been stuck in goofball comedy purgatory. Here, Aniston shows she has the chops to carry that dramatic weight.

“A Girl Walks Home Aloneat Night” (NR) -- This movieis an absolute surprise and atreat. It’s a suspenseful, sul-try, funny and creepy vam-pire Western from Iran. Oh,and it’s in black and white. The Girl -- as she is known -- walks the streets at nightin a black veil, completely unafraid of the pushers andpunks as she rides a skate-board she stole from a boy. There is romance, as the girlencounters Arash, a young outcast in the crosshairs ofa local thug. First-timer AnaLily Amirpour wrote anddirected this fi lm, showingstupefying skill with an it-ty-bitty budget.

DOLLARS AND SENSEBY David Uffi ngton

When You Can’t Cut Your TaxesIf you don’t have the mon-ey to pay the taxes you owe, there are a few different ways you can clear your debt with the IRS.First things fi rst, however: If you didn’t fi le a tax return because you don’t have the money to pay what you owe, you’ll need to call the IRS immediately, before your error is compounded. Call 1-800-829-1040 and ask to set up a payment plan. That will at least get you to the right department where the agents are mostly interested in helping you fi gure out a way to pay. Admit that you haven’t fi led because you don’t have the money, and that you need to set up a pay-ment plan.If you fi led but didn’t send any money, your next step depends on how much time you need.If you need only a short peri-od of time, say a few weeks, wait until the IRS sends you a bill in about a month, af-ter they’ve processed all the other returns. Even if you can’t pay the whole thing at

once, pay what you can and call them for an extension. There will be penalties and fees for being late, and they will continue to accrue the longer you wait. If you need an extension of up to 120 days, there is no fee involved, but the penal-ties will continue to add up.Depending on what you owe, you might qualify for an installment agreement. You can call or send in Form 9465, the Installment Agree-ment Request. Your best bet is to call and talk to one of the agents, who will help you determine what you can realistically pay each month. There are multiple options:

direct debit from your bankaccount, payroll deduction, mailing a monthly check andothers. There is a $120 feefor setting up an installmentagreement with a mailed check or payroll deduction, and that’s due upfront. If you allow a direct debit fromyour bank account, the fee is$52.If at all possible, get themoney you need withoutdoing a payment plan withthe IRS. Take the cash off acredit card, especially if youhave one with a zero interest rate. Borrow the money. Sellsomething. Whatever you do, don’t try to avoid paying.

April is National Car Care Month: Spring into ActionApril is National Car Care Month and the Car Care Council reminds motorists to spring into action and follow 10 basic maintenance procedures to make sure their vehicles are running at peak performance for the summer driving season.

1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear.3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free.4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change.5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous & must be corrected without delay.6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions.7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system, as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting.8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components.9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and replace worn wiper blades so you can see clearly when driving during precipitation.“Whether you visit a professional service technician or do it yourself, a thorough vehicle in-spection this spring can help keep your car safe and dependable and help you avoid much higher costs down the road.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

By Keith Roach, M.D.

Easier To Prevent Than Treat DiabetesDEAR DR. ROACH: I’m prediabetic. I have known you and others to say not to eat any grain that is not whole wheat. Based on that, I leave off white rice, pasta and white rolls. I eat two whole-wheat rolls most days. Does that sound right? I am underweight. -- S.R.ANSWER: It is much better and easier to prevent diabe-tes than it is to treat it. Diet and exercise are proven to help prevent diabetes in ev-eryone, even your less-com-mon situation of being nor-mal or underweight and at risk for diabetes. The most important part of diet is to avoid simple sug-ars. Processed grains are converted extremely rap-idly to sugar in the body. The added fi ber and protein of whole grains slows this process down somewhat; however, I still would rec-ommend having your grains with some healthy fat and protein. Nuts, olive oil and healthy vegetable spreads go great with whole-grain rolls and slow down absorption. By having foods in combi-nation, you can reduce dia-betes risk.Don’t forget about exercise, the other key to preventing diabetes. Any exercise is better than none. Walking is a great form of exercise that takes no special equipment and can be done anywhere. At 10,000 steps a day, which is not very hard to build up to, the risk of diabetes is signifi cantly decreased. An inexpensive pedometer can keep track of your steps and may motivate you to reach your goal.Diabetes has become ep-idemic in North America.

The booklet on it provides insight on its diagnosis and treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the re-cipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been taking Zoloft for al-most 10 years now. My psy-chiatrist believes I should stay on the medication for the rest of my life due to three serious episodes of depression. Now that I go regularly for counseling, I am starting to see the root of the depression and am aware of the triggers. As I get older, I worry about the long-term effects of this drug. Are there any studies about long-term effects of Zoloft and similar medica-tions? I’m also interested in your view on the necessity

of anti-depressants as a per-manent solution for peoplewith my condition. I’ve readthat antidepressants are notproven to be better than pla-cebos. -- N.M.ANSWER: Depression canbe a terrible disease, but formost people there are ef-fective treatments. Zoloft isin the class of medicationscalled SSRIs, and thesework in the brain wherenerve cells communicatewith each other. There are some studies anda lot of experience with us-ing these medications longterm. They are mostly safe, better than placebo and cer-tainly better than the risk ofrecurrent depression, whichafter three episodes is veryhigh. Counseling (psycho-therapy) is another effective treatment. Effective coun-seling may reduce the riskfor recurrent depression, butI would not stop the medica-tion without being carefullyfollowed by your counselorand psychiatrist.
