General Precautions
Do not leave the recorder in hot,humid locations such as inside aclosed automobile under directsunlight or on the beach in the
summer. Do not store the recorder in
places exposed to excessivemoisture or dust.
Do not use organic solvents suchas alcohol and lacquer thinner toclean the unit.
Do not place the recorder on topof or near electric appliances suchas TVs or refrigerators.
Avoid recording or playing backnear cellular phones or otherwireless equipment, as they maycause interference and noise.
If you experience noise, moveto another place, or move therecorder further away from suchequipment.
Avoid sand or dirt. These cancause irreparable damage.
Avoid strong vibrations or
shocks. Do not disassemble, repair or
modify the unit yourself.
Do not operate the unit whileoperating a vehicle (such as abicycle, motorcycle, or go-cart).
Keep the unit out of the reach ofchildren.
Recorded content in memory maybe destroyed or erased by operatingmistakes, unit malfunction, or during
repair work.It is recommended to back up and saveimportant content to other media such asa computer hard disk.Any liability for passive damages ordamage of any kind occurred due to dataloss incurred by a defect of the product,repair performed by the third party other

Batteries should never beexposed to flame, heated, short-circuited or disassembled.
Never store batteries wherethey will be exposed to directsunlight, or subjected to hightemperatures in a hot vehicle,near a heat source, etc.

Safe and proper usage
When carrying or storing thebatteries, be sure to put it inthe provided case to protect itsterminals. Do not carry or storethe batteries with any metalobjects (such as key rings).If this warning is not followed,fire, overheating or electric shockmay occur.
Do not connect the batteriesdirectly to a power outletor a cigarette lighter of anautomobile.
Do not insert the batteries withtheir= and- terminals reversed.
If any liquid from a battery getsinto your eyes, promptly wash itoff with clean water and consultyour doctor at once.
Do not attempt to rechargealkaline, lithium or any othernon-rechargeable batteries.
Never use any batteries with atorn or cracked outer cover.
Keep batteries out of the reach ofchildren.
If you notice anything unusualwhen using this product such asabnormal noise, heat, smoke, or aburning odor:
1 remove the batteries immediately
while being careul not to burn
yoursel, and;
2 call your dealer or local Olympus
representative or service.
Do not expose the batteries towater. Do not allow water tocontact the terminals.
Do not remove or damage thebatteries insulating sheet.
Do not use the batteries if youfind something wrong with themsuch as leakage, color change ordeformity.
Unplug the charger if thecharging is still incomplete afterthe specified time it should take.
Should any batteries liquid get onskin or clothing, promptly wash itoff with clean water.
Keep batteries away from fire.

shocks. When using rechargeable
batteries that have not been usedfor a while, be sure to rechargethem before use.

I the hour indicator lashes in thedisplay, see Setting time and date[Time & Date] ( P.15).
Battery indicator
The battery indicator on the display changesas the batteries loose power.
8{9{: When [:] appears on the display, replace
the batteries as soon as possible. Whenthe batteries are too weak, [ ] and[Battery Low] appears on the display andthe recorder shuts down.
Notes
Manganese batteries may not be used in
this recorder. When changing batteries, AAA alkalinebatteries or Olympus Ni-MH rechargeablebatteries are recommended.
Be sure to stop the recorder beorereplacing the batteries. Unloading the
batteries while the recorder is in use maycorrupt the fle. I you are recording intoa fle and the batteries run out, you willloose your currently recorded fle becausethe fle header will not be able to close.It is crucial to change the batteries onceyou see only one Hash mark in the batteryindicator.
I it takes longer than 1 minute to replacethe dead batteries or i you take thebatteries in and out repeatedly at shortintervals, you may have to reset the timewhen you have loaded resh batteries( P.15).
Remove the batteries i you are not goingto use the recorder or an extended period
o time. When playing a voice/music fle, the
recorder may be reset due to thereduction o the voltage output o thebatteries depending on the volume leveleven i [8] is displayed in the batteryindicator. In this case, lower the volume othe recorder.
When replacing rechargeable batteries, besure to use Ni-MH rechargeable batteries(optional). The use o other manuacturers'products can damage the recorder andshould be avoided.
" For WS-450S: This recorder cannot charge
rechargeable batteries.

Charging by connecting to a
computer via USB
You can charge the batteries by connectingto a PC's USB port. When charging, be sureto correctly place the rechargeable batteries(supplied) into the recorder ( P.10).
1 Boot the PC.
2 Slide the USB connector slidelever in the direction indicatedby the arrow to eject the USB
connector out of the recorder.
3 While pressing the STOP4button, connect to the PCs USBport.
Notes
The recorder cannot be charged when thePC is not turned on. Also, it may not becharged when the PC is in standby mode.
Do not charge the recorder with the USBhub connected.
I [Cannot charge] is displayed, it meansthat a battery that cannot be charged is
in the recorder. Replace the batteries withsupplied ones at once ( P. 10). Charging is completed when battery
indication becomes to [

Cautions concerning the rechargeable batteries
Read the ollowing descriptions careullywhen you use the Ni-MH rechargeablebatteries.
Discharging:
The rechargeable batteries sel-dischargewhile this is not in use. Be sure to chargethem regularly beore use.
Operating temperature:
The rechargeable batteries are chemicalproducts. The rechargeable batterieseiciency may luctuate even whenoperating within the recommendedtemperature range. This is an inherentnature o such products.
Recommended temperature range:When operating appliance:
0C - 42C/ 32F - 107.6FCharging:
5C - 35C/ 41F - 95FStorage for a long period:
20C - 30C/ 4F - 86F
Using the rechargeable batteries outsidethe above temperature range may result indeclining eiciency and shorter battery lie.In order to prevent battery leakage or rust,remove the rechargeable batteries rom theproducts when you will not be using themor a long time, and store them separately.
Notes This recorder is designed to ully charge
batteries regardless o their energy level.However, or best results when chargingnewly purchased rechargeable batteriesor batteries that have not been usedor a long time (more than one month),It is recommended to ully charge the
batteries then discharge repeatedly or 2to 3 times.
When disposing rechargeable batteries,always observe the local laws andregulations. Contact you local recyclingcenter or proper disposal methods.
The display will turn on, and the power willbe turned on.
The resume unction will bring therecorder back to the stop position inmemory beore power was turned o.
Turning on/off the powerWhen the recorder is not being used,turn the power o to reduce batteryconsumption to a minimum. Even ithe power is turned o, existing data,mode settings, and clock settings will bemaintained.

Slide the HOLD switch in theopposite direction that indicated bythe arrow.
I Ni-MH rechargeable batteries are notully discharged, protect against short-
circuiting (e.g. by taping the contacts)beore disposing.

Olympus has a contract with the GRS (JointBattery Disposal Association) in Germany toensure environmentally riendly disposal.

Set the recorder to HOLD mode
While the recorder is during stopmode, slide the HOLD switch in the
direction indicated by the arrow.
I you bring the recorder is set to HOLDmode, the running conditions will be
preserved, and all buttons will be disabled.This eature is useul when the recorder hasto be carried in a bag or pocket.
Ater [Hold] appears on the display, therecorder is set to HOLD mode.
Exit HOLD mode
Slide the HOLD switch in theopposite direction that indicated bythe arrow.
Notes
I you press any button in HOLD mode, theclock display ashes or 2 seconds, but itwill not operate the recorder.
Turning off the power
While the recorder is during stopmode, slide the HOLD switch in thedirection indicated by the arrow.
The display shuts o, and the power willbe turned o.
The resume unction remembers the stopposition beore the power is turned o.
Power save mode
I the recorder is stopped/not used or over5 minutes ater it is turned on, it goes intostandby (power-save) mode, and the displayshuts o. To exit standby mode and turn on the
display, press any button.

I you set the time and date beorehand,the inormation when the ile is recorded isautomatically stored or each ile. Settingthe time and date beorehand enables easierile management.
When you use the recorder for thefirst time after purchasing it, or whenthe batteries have been insertedwithout the device having beenused in a long time, the [Set Time &Date] will appear. When the houris flashing, conduct the setup fromStep 1.
1 Press the9 or0 button toselect the item to set.
Select the item rom the hour,minute, year, month and daywith a lashing point.
2 Press the + or button to set.
Follow the same steps by pressing the9 or0 button to select the next
item, and press the + or button toset.
You can select between 12 and 24hour display by pressing the LISTbutton while setting the hour andminute.

1 While the recorder is during stopmode, press the MENU button.
The menu will appear on the display( P.36).
4 Press the OK` or9 button.
[Time & Date] will appear on thedisplay.
The hour will lash on the display,indicating the start o the Time and
Date setup process.The ollowing steps are the same as Step 1through Step 3 o Setting time and date[Time & Date] ( P.15).
5 Press the MENU button to closethe menu screen.
3 Press the OK` or9 button tomove the cursor to the item toset.
[Device Menu] will appear on the
display.
Note
I you press the OK` button during thesetup operation, the recorder will save theitems that were set to that point.
Changing the time and date
While the recorder is during stop mode,press and hold the STOP4 button to displaythe [Time & Date], and [Remain]. I thecurrent time and date is not correct, set itusing the procedure below.
2 Press the + or button to select[Device Menu] tab.
You can change the menu display bymoving the settings tab cursor.
The clock will start rom the set dateand time. Press the OK` button
according to the time signal.

This device can be used as a voice recorderor as a music player. For recording andplayback voice recordings, set the modeswitch to [VOICE]. For listening to music, setthe mode switch to [MUSIC].

The voice iles and the music iles are separated into olders or voice recordings and oldersor music playback that are organized in a branching tree-style and saved.
About the folders for voice recordings
[Folder A] - [Folder E] are the olders or voice recordings. When recording with the recorder,select any one o the ive olders and then record.

About the folder for music playback
When transerring music iles to the device using Windows Media Player, a older isautomatically created within the music playback older which has a layered structure asshown in the diagram below. Music iles that are in the same older can be rearranged inpreerential order and replayed ( P.45).
Precautions for transferringmusic files:
When using Windows Media Player 10,click [Start Sync] instead o setting thesynchronization options. All the ileswill be transerred to the partA above( P.57).
Each older can store
up to 200 iles.
Up to 128 olders can be created under the[Music] older, including [Music].

Microphone sensitivity
Microphone sensitivity is adjustable to meetrecording needs.
[CONF]:This is a highly sensitive mode whichcan record surrounding noises.
[DICT]:This is the standard level omicrophone sensitivity. Select thismode or cases where the volume othe source sound is high, such as aband perormance.
Note
When you would like to clearly record
a speakers voice, set the MIC SENSECONF/DICT switch to [DICT] andhold the recorders built-in stereomicrophone close to the speakersmouth (5-10 cm) beore recording.
Notes
Recording level cannot be controlled
using the volume button. When using the earphones, do NOT set the
volume too high. Listening at very highvolume may lead to hearing loss.
Do not place earphones near amicrophone as this may cause eedback.
When the external speaker is connectedwhile recording, there is a risk that audio
eedback will occur.

Low Cut Filter
The recorder has a Low Cut Filter unction tominimize low-requency sounds and recordvoices more clearly. This unction can reducenoise rom air conditioners, projectors andother similar noises.[On]:
Enables the Low Cut Filter unction.
[Off]:Disables this unction.
VCVA
When the microphone senses thatsounds have reached a preset thresholdvolume level, the built-in Variable Control
Voice Actuator (VCVA) starts recordingautomatically, and stops when the volumedrops below the threshold level. TheVCVA eature extends recording time andconserves memory by stopping recordingduring silent periods, which helps theplayback to be more eicient.[On]:
Enables the VCVA unction. Will startrecording in VCVA mode.[Off]:
Disables this unction. Will resumerecording in normal mode.
Adjust the start/stop actuationlevel:
1 Press the RECs button to startrecording.
When the sound volume is lower thanthe preset threshold sound level,recording automatically stops ater1 sec approximately, and [Standby]lashes on the display. The recording
indicator light glows when recordingstarts and lashes when recordingpauses.
2 Press the9 or0 buttonadjust the start/stop actuationlevel.
The VCVA level can be set to any o 15
dierent values. The higher the value, the more
sensitive the recorder to sounds. Atthe highest value, even the aintestsound will activate recording.

The start/stop actuation level also variesdepending on the selected microphonesensitivity mode ( P.23 or P.38 ).
I the starting level is not adjusted within
2 seconds, the display will return to theprevious. I the surrounding noise is loud, the
starting sensitivity o the VCVA can beadjusted according to the recordingsituation.

Noise Cancel
I recorded audio is diicult to understandbecause o noisy surroundings, adjust theNoise Cancel setting level.[High] [Low]:
Enables the Noise Cancel unction. Noisewill be reduced in the ile when its playedback or better sound quality.
[Off]:
Disables this unction. When [Noise Cancel] is set to [Low] or
[High], [Voice Filter] and slow/high speedplayback unctions will not unction. Touse these unctions, set [Noise Cancel] to[Off].
Voice Filter
The recorder has a Voice Filter Function tocut low and high requency tones duringnormal, ast, or slow playback, and enableclear audio playback.[On]:
Enables the Voice Filter unction.[Off]:
Disables this unction. When [Voice Filter] is set to [On], [NoiseCancel] will not unction. To use thisunctions, set [Voice Filter] to [Off].
WOW
The recorder has WOW XT, an audioprocessing technology that increases soundclarity and bass quality.The level o the surround eect (SRS 3D) andthe bass eect (TruBass) may be individuallyadjusted through 4 levels o processing.
1 Select [SRS 3D] or [TruBass].
[SRS 3D]:The surround eect can be adjusted.The expansive eel and clarity o thesound can be increased.
[TruBass]:The low-requency range can beadjusted. The low-requency rangecan be made richer.
To ensure successul recordings, priortesting and adjustment o the start/stopactuation level is recommended.

The WOW XT eect will be weakened ithe bit rate or any music fle is less than 32kbps.
Depending on the song, the WOW XTeect will be heightened, and may soundlike noise. I this happens, adjust theWOW XT eect.
Set [WOW] to [Off] to use the slowplayback or ast playback mode.Otherwise you cannot use these unctions( P.42).
Equalizer
I you change the equalizer setting, you canenjoy the music with your avorite soundquality.
1 Select the desired equalizercharacteristics.
[Off]:Disables the equalizer unction.
[Rock] [Pop] [Jazz]:Enables the equalizer unction.
[User]:Select [User] to save your owncustom equalizer settings. I [User] is
selected, proceed to Step 2.2 Select the frequency band.
[60 Hz] [250 Hz] [1 kHz] [4 kHz] [12 kHz]:Select the requency bandwidthsetting.
3 Select the equalizer level.
You can select the equalizer level rom [6]
to [+6] in 1dB increments. The higher the decibel value, the louder
the sound.
To change the settings again, press the9 or0 button and repeat theprocedure rom step 2.
Play Mode
You can select the playback mode that itsyour preerence.
Select the desired playback range:
1 Select [Play Area].
2 Select [File], [Folder] or [All].
[File]:Selects the current ile.

[File]:Stop ater playing back the current ile.
[Folder]:Play iles continuously in the current older
until the last ile and stop. In [File] mode, when the recorder comesto the end o the last fle in the older,[End] ashes or two seconds on thedisplay and the recorder stops at the starto the last fle.
In [Folder] mode, when the recordercomes to the end o the last fle in the
older, [End] ashes or two seconds onthe display and the recorder stops at thestart o the frst fle in the older.
In [All] mode, ater playing the last fle inthe older, the recorder will start playingrom the frst fle in the next older. Whenit comes to the end o the last fle in therecorder, [End] ashes or two seconds on

Play Speed
The playback speed o the ile can bechanged between 0.5 and 2 times speed.Change the speed according to need such aslistening to meeting content at a ast speed
or reviewing spots that you couldn't catchin a language lesson at a slow speed. Thetone will be automatically adjusted digitallywithout changing the voice so it soundsnatural.
Restrictions on double speedplayback:Double speed ast playback maynot be available depending on thesampling requencyand the bit rateo the ile to be played back. In sucha case, the device plays back in up tox1.5 speed.
As in normal playback mode, you can stopplayback, cue a ile, or insert an index markin slow playback and ast playback modesas well ( P.31).

It may take over 10 seconds to completeprocessing. Never remove batteries duringthis time because data may be corrupted.In addition, replace the batteries with newones in order to ensure that the batterieswill not run out while processing.

Precautions on using the recorder connected to a PC
When you are downloading a fle romthe recorder or uploading a fle to therecorder, do not remove the USB cableeven i the screen is indicating you can.Data is still being transerred while therecording indicator light is blinking. Whenremoving the USB cable, be sure to ollowthe description in P.51. I the USB cableis removed beore the drive is stopped,
data may not be successully transerred. On a PC, do not ormat the drive o the
recorder. Initialization is not successullyachieved on a PC. For initialization, ollowthe instructions in the [Format] screen othe recorder ( P.46).
Folder (directory) names appeared byfle management tools such as Explorer
attached to Microsot Windows is dierentrom the older names that can be set withthe recorder.
I olders or fles stored on the recorderare moved or renamed by using a flemanagement tool such as Explorer, theorder o fles may be changed or fles maybecome unrecognizable
Data can be written or uploaded to therecorder even though the attribute o therecorder drive is shown as Read-only bythe operating system o the PC.
As the noise may cause adverse eects onelectronics devices nearby the recorder,unplug the external microphone andearphone when you connect the recorderto a PC.
Copyright and copyright protection feature (DRM)
By the Copyright Act, any voice/musiciles and music CDs downloaded rom theInternet without the copyright holderspermission may not be reproduced,distributed, publicized/re-publicized onthe Internet, or converted into WMA or MP3iles or the purpose o commercial businessor sale.A WMA ile may be provided with DRM

3 Click [Sync] menu again to select[DVR]{ [Advanced Options]{[Set Up Sync], and set as follows.

6 Click [Start Sync].
The ile is transerred to the recorder.The music ile transerred to therecorder is displayed in Item onDevice.
Notes
Copying the music fles with DRM purchased online music distribution service to a portabledevice such as this recorder may be restricted.
To transer the fles by using Windows Media Player 9, check the Olympus website. I the music fles are transerred to the recorder until it reaches to the maximum memory,
the message [Cant make the system file. Connect to PC and delete unnecessary file]may appear on this recorders display. In such a case, erase the fles to make ree space(hundreds o KB to dozens o MB depending on the music fle sizes) or the managementfle. (The more capacity or the management fle will be necessary as the number o themusic fles increases).
