  • Resident of the Month

Bobbie Atchley was born on June 20, 1937 in Cleveland, Tennessee to J.B. and Mazie Woody. She was the oldest of five, and the only girl. She lost two of her brothers in in-fancy, and another at the age of 50 to

health issues. Her father was a tenant farm-er who worked for a dollar a day. He had a difficult upbringing, and in turn, it affected the way he showed love to his children. But Bobbie’s parents were hard workers and left a great legacy to her and her brothers. They were taught integrity, honesty, determina-tion and to be hard workers. Bobbie said growing up they were poor, but they nev-er wanted for anything (except for maybe something store-bought). Bobbie’s mother was a very caring woman and made up for her father’s shortcomings in affection.

She met her husband, Leon, when she was 19. He was a friend of her friend’s boyfriend. She and Leon went out a few times before he left for Europe with the military. Leon, while stationed in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, requested her to come overseas to see him. Traveling overseas was out of the question for her. In 1956, he returned home from Europe and they began to date seri-ously. Leon proposed in January of 1957 and they were married in August.

Having quit school as a freshman, she worked to help provide for her family. Her mother encouraged her to go to nursing school. In 1959, since she did not graduate, she was re-quired to pass a test to go to nursing school. She did not realize she was taking the GED but passed with flying colors. She attended LPN school and was a straight “A” student. After graduation, she went to work for Dr. Humphries in his office where she was his assistant for 11 years. Still not completely happy working in the office environment, she considered going back to school. School had always come easy for Bobbie. In Fact, she loved it. Leon considered her a profes-sional student. She decided to return to school again and received her BSN in 1986.

Bobbie and Leon raised two amazing young men – Rick and Chuck. She credits Leon for being an amazing husband and father. In 1997, she retired and sought to become a member of the Hospital Board. She was a member of the Hospital, Board of Trustees for seven years. She knows the Lord had his hand on her life since day one and has di-rected her path through every trial and every victory. He has made her who she is today.

Bobbie first came to Legacy for care after a broken shoulder. Once here, she liked it so much, she chose to stay. We are so blessed to have Bobbie as a resident here at Legacy. Her testimony and faith are an inspiration to all.

  • I sat inside the packed auditorium as the guest speaker shared his sto-ry of drug addiction and gang involvement. I lis-tened with wide eyed wonder as he wove the story of his life, which

was, in his words, the result of a $20 “trick.” His near-death experiences and time spent in and out of jail was a story that could eas-ily be made into a movie. As he was finish-ing his story and sharing about how God’s grace and mercy had found him through the efforts of a Christian street ministry, I thought to myself, “I don’t have a story.” At that moment I found myself almost envying this man’s life. I was jealous. He was filling large meeting houses with his captivating story of deliverance. Who does not love a good story? What did I have to offer except

a boring life? I might as well pack it in and go back to my modest church and live my life in anonymity. Who wants to listen to guy without a good story to tell?

Instead of rejoicing in this man’s victory over a horrible life, I was envying it! I want-ed a big story that would draw big crowds. I had missed the point completely. When one of the early Christian martyrs, John Bradford, saw a poor criminal being to lead to his execution, he exclaimed, “There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford.” I did have a story to tell! It was time to start telling it. There, but for the grace of God, goes David Riggs!
