For those new to Charity Week – welcome, and get ready for an incredible “five” days. You will laugh, cry, hug strangers, and celebrate life as you work and give of yourself for the benefit of others. Charity Week, Red Hawk style, is an unprecedented tradition. Our monetary goal this year is to raise $100,000 for Jenna Kast’s Believe in Miracles http://www.believeinmiracles. Our personal goal is to honor Jenna, who would have graduated with the Class of 2017, and to cheer on sophomore Caroline Mayne as she battles Hodgkin's Lymphoma. All proceeds from the week will help provide joy and hope for Michigan children suffering from life-threatening illnesses……...I couldn’t be more proud to be a Red Hawk.
A pre-week kick off begins Saturday, Feb. 4th, with a Parent/Staff/Alumni Euchre Tournament at 7:00 pm and ice skating at the Troy Sports Center from 9:45-11 pm. Charity Week highlights will include a CycleBar event, dress-up days, a morning rally & pancake breakfast, film festival, teacher dance battle, game show night, volleyball tournament, jail-n-bail, parent cook-off, and Mr. Athens Pageant. The week concludes Friday, Feb. 10th, at our Big Reveal Pep Assembly and Charity Dance. Thank you in advance to every parent, student, business owner and staff member for your generosity and humanity! Thank you as well to our incredible StuCo leaders and advisors, Shawn DuFresne & Kristy Pierce.

Congratulations to Ath-ens senior, Prathusha Yeruva, who has been selected as one of only two students to rep-resent the state of Michigan as a delegate to the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) in Washington, D.C. Prathusha will also receive a $10,000 college scholarship.
The USSYP was founded in 1962 through Senate Resolu-tion and each year two of the highest achieving students from each state, the District of Columbia and the Department of Defense Education system overseas are selected through an extremely competitive merit-based selection process held at the state departments of educa-tion na-tionwide. Congratula-tions to Prathusha!
Congratulations to the fol-lowing students, who scored in the top 25% of Michigan students in the 60th Annual Michigan Math-ematics Prize Competition. They qualified to compete in Part 2 of the MMPC, which was held on Wednes-day, December 7, during 1st and 2nd hours. The students with the Top 100 combined scores will be honored at an Awards Banquet, with the top 50 earning scholarship prizes.

Student Congress UpdateStudent Congress wrapped up the first semester with a variety of projects. The December Blood Drive netted 50 pints. Also in December, the student body responded to the Food Drive Challenge by collecting over 7,000 cans of food! Mr. DeSantis’s class took first place honors, Mrs. Peterson was runner-up, and Mrs. Cracchiolo placed third. The food was donated to a holiday drive organized by the Troy Police Department and Troy VFW Post 4037, and it was delivered to needy residents and families in Troy and neighboring communities. Charity Week begins February 6, 2017
Charity Week this year will be held February 6th-10th. There are a variety of ways for students to become involved during the week and contribute to the charity selected by Student Congress.
The charity organization chosen by Student Congress this year is Troy-based The Jenna Kast Believe in Miracles Foundation. The mission of the charity is to enrich the lives of Michigan children suf-fering from life-threatening medical conditions by buying gifts and bringing joy and hope to their lives. Jenna Kast was a Troy School District student when she passed away in 2010, and would have graduated from Athens this year. Check out http://www.believein-miracles.org/ for more information.

2017 Charity Week Dance—Semi-FormalThis year’s Charity Dance is scheduled for Friday, February 10, from 7-10 p.m. Tickets for the dance are on sale on Payschools for $10 each. Students can pick up their tickets during all three lunches from February 8-10. THERE ARE NO CASH SALES AND NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT THE DOOR. All students who are bringing a guest from another school (except Troy High and IA) must fill out a guest application, which is available in the AP office, and should be turned into the ticket table at lunch by Thursday, February 9. If you have questions, please see Mr. Mills in the AP Office. **If you are purchasing a Charity Week Passport, you receive a dance ticket and do not need to purchase a ticket.
Most individual tickets to Charity Week events are $5, but the best way to make sure that your Athens student doesn’t miss a minute of the fun is to purchase a passport in advance for only $85 dollars through PaySchools! Strong. Fit. Talented. Agile. Muscular.So much time, energy, and money is spent to develop physical traits.
But how are you really doing on the inside?Likely, you feel tired, anxious, and stressed.
On the inside, the picture is often not as pretty as the outside. It’s a mess…

How many times as a parent have you looked at your child and only saw the outside? As a parent I have been guilty of this. It is a painful lesson to be taught to you by your child. We seem to have the ability to only see what we want to see. I can tell you, that I saw a young
man, my son, who was strong, who I thought was indestructible, yet was far from it. He did not want to let me down, he understood how much I wanted him to succeed, how much I wanted
him to be at the highest level, yet I did not ask nor did I look to see if it was what he wanted. It was not until one spring evening after a very difficult practice that I was taught what I had been putting him through. I came home late to hear my son sobbing in his room. I was concerned and worried so I went in and asked what was wrong. I then found out that he was suffering from severe problems in both knees, hip problems and lower back problems –that for him to run was extremely painful and finally his body broke down. I have asked myself countless
times how could I have not seen this coming – what did I do to him? Why did I do this to my son?
I firmly believe each of our children face this every day, they may not be an athlete, may not be the big strong young person. They could be just a high school student, just like every other
student. What is so important is that we do not make that assumption of any child. It is so important that we do not put our self-expectations on our children, that we talk to our children about their expectations, about their hopes, about their dreams. We must remember that we are there to support them, to assist them, not to impose on them. I hope that you never have
to come home and hear your child sobbing in their room because they cannot live up your standards, your hopes, your expectations. For if you do, it will haunt
you for a long time.

It is very important that you continue to do well over the next 20 weeks. Your final high school transcript is sent to the col-lege or university you have decided to attend and if you have not maintained your grades, the college/university could revoke your admission.
"BEWARE!"Athens does not recommend pay-ing for any College Selection, Col-lege Admission or College Financial Aid services. Almost all of the information is available for free on the internet. Your counselor can help answer questions and guide you to resources. We have had a couple of parents recently who signed up with private companies and paid for services that they were very disappointed with.

Below are reminders with specific updates highlighted. We have noticed unsafe driving practices: driving too fast, passing cars and almost hitting students, driving in restricted areas. Please help us keep Red Hawks safe by following the below visual and verbal expectations:
• The speed limit is 15 mph when driving on school property.
• We prefer students to be dropped-off via the front Main Entrance Loop. When leaving the front loop, parents may not pass other traffic in order to enter the faculty lot. That access to the faculty lot is a two-way road. Please follow the traffic signage and respect the stop signs.
• Students should never be dropped-off in the front faculty lot. Picking students up in the faculty is ok.
• Students may be dropped-off in the back student parking lot, but please use the west entrance access and do not pass cars, for you are crossing into traffic going the opposite direction and making it more dangerous for students who are walking from the parking lot to the school.

SOPHOMORES & FRESHMENtalk to your son/daughter about the impor-tance of getting off to a good start each se-mester. All assignments need to be completed and turned in on time.
if you need extra help, ask your teacher if you can stay late or come in early to meet with them. take advantage of free tutoring in room 114, Monday-thursday after school.
Encourage school involvement. if your son/daughter is not involved in a school activity, now is the time to join. in addition to sports, Athens has many clubs and organizations that students can participate in. for example, Project lEAD is a large community service group. there is a full list of clubs (50 different choices) available in the AP Office.
JUNIORS
in order to meet the state of Michigan’s and troy school District’s graduation require-ments, students planning to graduate in 2018 must complete the sAt. All Athens juniors will take the sAt on April 11, 2017, at Athens high school. Each student’s sAt score may be used for college admissions. students may elect to take additional sAt tests for a fee by registering at www.col-legeboard.com. Juniors may also register to take the Act for a fee through the Act website – www.actstudent.org. there is no limit to the number of times a student takes either the Act or sAt.
there are also several other required state specific tests that will be given to juniors during the month of April.
As juniors schedule for senior classes, it is important for them to select courses that will be challenging for them as they continue to prepare them for their future academic and vocational endeavors.
the college Board, www.collegeboard.com, is an excellent resource for students search-ing for colleges or universities which are a good fit. Information provided includes se-lectivity, location, major and minor areas of study, and more.
college applications, which are typically completed by students between september 1st and november 1st of their senior year, usually require students to provide a copy of their senior year schedule. it is the stu-dent’s responsibility to make colleges aware of AnY changes made to the schedule and to be sure the changes will not affect their application status or acceptance.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SAT AND ACTon tuesday, April 11, all juniors in the state of Michigan will take the sAt in school. some students may elect to take the Act on their own. the Act will not be taken in school this year. Below are frequently asked questions about these tests.
Q: What is the SAT?
A. the sAt is a globally available test ac-cepted by colleges and universities through-out the United states and in numerous in-ternational locations. this test is designed to reflect what students learn in high school. it contains the following sections: reading, writing and language, and Math. students also write an essay during the sAt.
Q: What is the ACT?
A. the Act is a test based on high school curriculum that is accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the United states. it contains the following sections: English, Mathematics, reading, and sci-ence. students also write an essay during the Act.
Q: Should my student take both the SAT and the ACT?
A. Generally, colleges and universities ac-cept either test for admission purposes.
Q: When are the tests offered?
A. in addition to the April 11th test for all juniors, the sAt is being offered in other locations on March 11, May 6, and June 3. to sign up for these additional dates or for more information, visit sat.org/register.

This year the cost of each AP exam is $97.00. Athens High School desires that every student be able to take their AP exams. Families who qualify for the National Free and Reduced Lunch Program can indicate financial need within the online registration and a portion of your fees will be waived. Your request will be reviewed and you will receive an e-mail reply with your total cost which will allow you to complete your registration.
2016 AP Sign-up Checklist (Must complete all steps!!!)_______You must register for every AP Exam that you plan on taking.
_______Determine the correct 2016 AP Examinations that you will be taking.
_______Go online to www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/233602 or the link provided on the Athens High School website entitled 2017 AHS AP Registration and complete all required sections of the registration. Print two copies of the pdf confirmation page that is provided at the end.
_______Complete payment for your examinations through PaySchools. There is a link available on the Athens High School website under AP Testing Registration and the account is listed as 2017 AHS AP Exam Fees. Your final payment should be equal to the amount shown on your Total Registration Confirmation Page. Print two copies of the pdf confirmation page that is provided at the end.
_______Bring a copy of BOTH printed confimations to Mrs. Sparbeck in the Counseling Office. You will be provided a 2017 AP Student Guide at this time. Keep the seocnd copy of your receipts for your records.
Any student that has not completed all required steps will not have exams ordered.

Athens Band Boosters News Percussion and Color Guard Competitions Rock Athens in FebruaryThe Athens Band Boosters will be hosting some amazing musi-cal performances this February at the Winter Guard International (WGI) regional competition. The competition will be held on Satur-day February 11th in the Athens Gym. Twenty top percussion en-sembles from Michigan and Ohio will perform in the 12th annual Winter Guard International (WGI) regional competition. Tickets are $13 for prelims and $17 for fi-nals. A $23 combo prelims/finals ticket is also available at admis-sions on the day of the event. A full concession stand will be open all day.
Indoor percussion ensemble competitions involve an array of equipment, movement, and skill. A variety of percussive instru-ments and other props are uti-lized to bring music and themes to life while displaying technique, creativity, and expression.
Local units competing include world class group Walled Lake Central High School and high school units from Farmington Hills, Ferndale, Grand Blanc, Hu-ron Valley, Lake Orion, Novi, and Southgate Anderson. World class groups Redline and North Coast Academy will also compete.
Winterguard Competition Season Begins The Alias Winterguard Competi-tion season will begin on Feb-ruary 4th at West Bloomfield. Then they will be competing at Chippewa Valley on February 18th. Good luck to AKA, AA, and SA groups!!!!

Jazz Band Heats Up March with Two Special Performances
Jazz Band Dinner Dance
The Red Hawk Room Jazz Club, located inside The Troy Community Center will be swingin’ Friday, March 3 as our outstanding students in the Athens Jazz Band provide an evening of jazz at its finest. All Athens parents and students, teachers, staff, and administrators are invited to attend. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students and include entertainment, a delicious family style dinner, and soft drinks. Students also have the option of purchasing a $5.00 ticket for music and dancing which begins after din-ner at 7:00 pm. Visit www.athensband.com for more information.

Who we are: The Athens Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is comprised of parents, teachers and administrators who work together to raise funds, provide volunteers, and organize events.
How to join: If you have a student at Athens, you may fill out the Athens PTO Membership Form and submit the form along with $15.00 dues to the Athens PTO mailbox (or the PTO table during registration). You will receive a Student Directory as part of your membership which can be picked up at Open House. Additional directories may be purchased for $5.00 each. Membership is open until October 31, or 60 days after your student begins at-tending Athens. Teachers complete the Teacher Membership Form and submit with dues to Athens PTO mailbox.
When we meet: We meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the TACC Room (enter from the John R parking lot). We do not meet in December, meeting dates for the 2016-17 school year are:
