y Originally established by the U.S. Department of Defense ,the first GPS satellite was launched in 1978.
y The first 10 satellites (1978~1984) were called Block I.
y President Ronald Reagan declassified the GPS system

From 1989 to 1993, 23 production satellites, called Block II were launched.
y The launch of the 24th satellite in 1994 completed thesystem.
y Korean Airline flight 007 got lost over Soviet territory and was shot down by Soviet fighters.

y The operational control segment (OCS) maintains thesatellites & tracks in space. The OCS monitors satellitehealth and signal integrity and maintains the orbital
configuration of the satellites.
y Lastly, the user receiver equipment performs thenavigation, timing or other related functions (e.g.surveying).
