ROTARIANS IN ACTION

Gift of Life International receives more requests for help from parents of children with heart disease in The Philippines than from any other country in the world. In response to this cry for help, we are excited to announce the birth of a new partnership in Cebu with International Children’s Heart Foundation (ICHF) , Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), The Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Clubs of Cebu and Willingboro. Through this partnership and the support of Rotary Global Grant 1867556, the first of three scheduled training visits resulted in the treatment of 44 Filipino children. A total of 16 children were treated through open-heart surgery, 18 were treated via interventional catheterization (1 unsuccessful), and 13 children received diagnostic catheterizations (2 of which also had surgery). An additional 61 children were screened with 28 of them being placed on the list for surgery during future missions and 11 in need of interventional catheterizations. Quite a remarkable start to this new venture to heal little hearts in Cebu, The Philippines! Our sincere thanks to all Rotary Grant contributors for helping us to bring hope to these children and their parents. A heartfelt thank you to the members of the Rotary Club of Cebu for their warm hospitality and coordination of logistics for the mission team. We wish to express our gratitude to each and every healthcare professional who participated in this lifesaving mission – both visiting team from ICHF and VSMMC worked tirelessly throughout the mission weeks and remained focused on healing the hearts of as many children as possible. Last but not least, a huge thank you to the many vendors who donated product and services which helped us make a lasting impact on 44 children and their families.
