The Presentation or Ent() of the Mother of God

the Temple (November 21st) donot belong to the most ancient fetivals of the Church. None the leit must be earlier than the end the VIIth century, since St. Adrew of Crete had known it at Jrusalem at this epoch. It seems thit was introduced at Constantiople a century later, under the Ptriarch St. Tarasius. It was to adopted in the West only undPope Gregory XI, who had it celbrated for the first time at Avignin 1374.

Like the festival of the Ntivity of the Mother of God, that Her Presentation in the Tempwas created by the Tradition of tChurch, which made use of tapocrypha in order to emphasizethis time in the person of the chsen Virgin consecrating Herself the service of Godthe fulfi

ment of the economy of the Creator. The mystery this marian festival, which can be compared with t

Dormition, leads us into the very treasure-house of tTradition; the Church breaks the silence of the Scritures and shows as the incomprehensible ways Providence, which prepare the receptacle of the Worthe Mother predetermined before the agespreached by the prophets, now introduced into tHoly of Holies, like a Hidden Treasure of the Gloof God.

The theme of the temple is developed in tliturgy and iconography of the Presentation. It is ttemple rebuilt by Zorobabel, less glorious than that

here were, and still are, many famines in theworld. Many are caused by natural disasters. The Famine in Ukraine was not the result of nay

natural disasters. It was directed andimplemented by the Russian Commu-nist Part under the orders of Stalin. The word to be used is GENOCIDE,plain and simple. Genocide is accord-ing to the dictionary: the systematickilling of a whole people or nation. The crime of genocide has been com-

mitted throughout the whole history ofthe human race. The 20th and 21st cen-turies have witnessed genocides on ascale never known before. Genocide istoday being attempted in several partsof the world.

Note the word systematic. The genocide against the UkrainianPeople was no accident-it was wellplanned out and carried out on a grandscale unheard of before. In the words ofone periodical: the breadbasket of

Europe became a vast graveyard. Thekilling instrument used was the deliber-ate starvation of Ukraine, along with diseases such astyphus and scurvy. It was a crime hushed up and, for the most part, keptfrom the knowledge of the public. This situation existstoday. I never heard about it in all the courses I had inworld history. The United States was well informedabout the genocide but chose to adopt a policy of si-lence. This was done for political reasons. TheUnited States recognized the government of the Soviet

Union in November, 1933.This past week was really the first time I

down to seriously read the accounts of the horrorthis murderous event. The descripof the sufferings and deaths of the tims is chilling. We are talking abthe death of near 10 million people. cover-up in the press was outrageousPulitzer Prize winning journalist ofNew York Times denied that such evwas happening.

Only in 1988 did the Congresthe U.S. have a commission study onUkrainian Famine conclude that JosStalin and those around him commiGenocide against Ukraine in 1932-19

So, today we gather to rememthis awful crime committed against lions of our brothers and sister. Wemember-and in some way today we spiritually with them in their sufferin

I chose two verses from Book of Lamentations from the Bi

The Book is described as beinscream of pain in the face of unspeable suffering of a people. As the prophet Jeremfaced the awful suffering of his people, we also, todweep and are moved as we remember the hell of 191933.

The is a ray of hope in the Lamentations; Lord is good to those who fear Him, to the souls seekHimone should wait quietly for Lord (Lamentations 3:25). We gather-we remembervictims are in Eternal Memory

All you who pass by-look and see if there isany sorrow like my sorrowRemember, O

    Lord, what has befallen us

Solomon. The rabbinical tradition tells us: Five thingswhich were in the first temple were no longer in thesecond. They were: the Fire from on high, the Oil ofanointment, the Ark, the Holy Spirit, the Urimand Thummim.1 The Holy Spirit aban-dons the Temple, to speak by theprophets. But He will confer on

the temple of the law a glory notto be compared with that of theold covenant, by introducing intothe Holy of Holies the Virgin whois to give birth to Jesus, made alight priest for ever after the orderof Melchisedec (Heb. vi, 20). Hewho welcomes the Holy Virgin, the priest Zacharias, the futurefather of the Forerunner, reunitesin his person the two traditionspriestly and prophetic. If he al-lows the Virgin to go in behindthe second veil, which is contraryto the Law, it is because he seesin Her the new Ark of the cove-nant, the living Ark. The an-gels were astonished to see theVirgin enter the Holy of Holies:the Divine plan of the Incarnationremains incomprehensible to theprincipalities and powers in heav-enly places, which will knowonly through the Church the mystery, which from thebeginning of the world hath been hid in God (Eph. iii,

9-10). It is the secret preparation of the humanity ofChrist: in the temple of Jerusalem the chosen Virginwill prepare herself to become later the Temple of HisBody, that which will be destroyed and in three daysraised up. The theme of the temple, in the feast of thePresentation of the Holy Virgin, allows a glimpse ofthat of the ChurchBody of Christ. The assimilationof the Mother of God to the Ark of the covenant lends amarian meaning to the verse of Ps. cxxxi sung at thevespers of the Assumption: Arise, O Lord, into thyrest; thou and the ark of thy holiness.

Many, since Origen, have used the symbolism

which likens the three parts of the temple of the threestages of spiritual lifepurification, illumination andunion, to which correspond the three books of Solo-monProverbs, Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs. The court of the temple corresponds to active life, where the aim is (freedom from passions). The

veil of the Holy (the second part of the temple) opethe way of natural contem-plation ( knowledge of God in the creation. The Holy of H

lies corresponds to contemplation properly -called, which is , or knowled

of God in the Logos.2 Wagain find the three parts of t

temple in the iconography of tPresentation of the Mother God. Thus, in our icon the sceunfolds in the inner court of ttemple, near the entrance to tHoly. The priest Zachariclothed in his priestly robstands before the doors of tHoly on the first step of tstaircase (the fifteen degrees the temple which correspond the fifteen psalms of the dgrees). Below, the Holy Virgoutstretching her arms towarZacharias, starts to mount tsteps which lead towards tHoly of Holies. At the top, Sis seen again, already there, sting on the highest step, near tdoor of the Holy of Holiewhere an angel comes to assHer. It is the degree of conteplation, the pre-engageme

with God, the start of the way of union during whithe Holy Virgin will be nourished on heavenly bread

The Holy Virgin, represented twice on our icon, hnothing of the child about Her despite Her small sizwhich must indicate Her young age (three years olShe is already a perfected person: the Mother of Gclothed in the maphorion, such as will be seen, for eample, in icons for the Annunciation. In fact, St. Greory of Nyssa says that the Song of Songs corresponto spiritual maturity-the age of contemplative lwhich introduces the soul into the divine sanctuies.3

Behind the Holy Virgin, in the centre of tcourt, St. Joachim and St. Anna advance towards t

priest Zacharias, presenting their Daughter to hiThey are followed by young girls, who with tapers their hands accompany the Virgin consecrated to GoUnlike St. Anna and the Mother of God, the virgins the temple have their head uncovered. The backgrouis occupied with temple buildings.
