“Investing in education for the young meetings professional”The annual ICCA Silent Auction will run once more throughout the 46th ICCA Congress & Exhibition in Thailand.

Wonderful prizes have been donated from generous companies all over the world, and they will be on display at the ICCA Silent Auction stand in the Exhibition area of the Congress.

Bids for each item are anonymous and the highest bid received by Tuesday 30 October will win the prize. What is the ICCA Silent Auction?The ICCA Silent Auction contributes to the ICCA Education Fund, previously known as Ernst Stock Fund. This fund provides educational opportunities for Young Meetings Professionals and helps raise professional standards in the International Meetings Industry.

Objectives of the ICCA Education FundTo create educational opportunities for Young Meetings Professionals, thereby helping to raise the professional standards in the International Meetings Industry.

To provide educational support for Young Meetings Professionals in whatever way possible to regenerate the meetings industry for cities and regions that have experienced a crisis (for circumstances beyond their control, ie: war, economic crisis, environmental disaster, which has affected their meetings industry).

Where do the proceeds go?The proceeds of the ICCA Silent Auction go to the ICCA Education Fund, investing in education for the Young Meetings Professional. The Fund, among other things, financially supports the Forums for Young Professionals at EIBTM and AIME.

We would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to each donor for their contribution. Their generous support will enable us to continue with this worthwhile activity in the future.

Ethiopia is the birth place of ‘Lucy’, or Dinkenesh, meaning ‘thou art wonderful’. The world’s earliest known hominid, Dinkenesh lived more than 3.2 millions ago and her bones now lie in the Ethiopian National Museum. This important archaeological find, combined with many other prehistoric discoveries - including Stone Age tools up to 1.7 million years old and vibrant cave paintings - bears testimony to the region’s remarkable antiquity.

Recorded history for the Ethiopian region also began at an early period. Three thousand years before the birth of Christ the ancient Egyptians sent expeditions down the Red Sea in quest of gold, ivory, incense, and slaves. They called this territory the ‘Land of Punt’. Although this term was used for both sides of the Red Sea, most of the goods seem to have come from the Ethiopian area.

The country’s rich tapestry of history is woven with fascinating facts and legends: the often-told tale of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba; the journey of the Ark of the Covenant, which is now rest in Axum; the growth of the ancient Axumite kingdom and the birth of Christianity; the later rise of Islam; the story of King Lalibela, who is reputed to have founded eleven rock-hewn churches, still in existence to this day and considered among the Wonders of the World; the fabled castles of Gondar. This ancient history melds with the modern to make Ethiopian the unique and unforgettable country it is today.

Watterston Associates will identify and secure up to 6 international association executives from the UK to attend a 2 night/3 day familiarisation trip to a European destination (not more than 4 hours flight time from London Heathrow). Appearance Intense vibrant purple, black colour.

Bouquet Lifted complex aromas of berry, cherry, blackcurrant fruit, chocolate and mocha with subtle integrated oak complexity of vanilla and cigar box.

Winemaking Sourced from selected premium McLaren Vale vineyards with predominantly Bay of Biscay soils. Harvested when fruit flavours, grape tannins and acids reached maturity.

Fermentation on skins was for 7-10 days with a proportion of the wine (30%) completing fermentation in barrel Maturation of fruit from each vineyard was considered and completed in specialized oak from a range of coopers from Grance, Europe, USA and Australia. Maturation was for 18 months in both new and used oak barrels.

Barrel selection during all stages of fermentation and barrel maturation to ensure only the best Shiraz barrels were selected for the final blend.

pH 3.5 T.A. 6.5g/L Alc. 14.5% by vol.

Aeging Potential Drinking best up to 2012. This wine can be decanted for up to 2 hours prior to consumption. Our Shiraz is an exquisite accompaniment for full flavoured food, but is sufficiently complex and satisfying to be savoured on its own.

“My painting is fundamentally about communicating what I see in my mind’s eye. While verbal expression is the predominant form of communication from early childhood, I have a talent with visual expression. Painting is my vehicle for this. Sarawak is a very special place. My aim is to capture the essence and the spirit of the visual Sarawak. It’s beautiful meandering rivers seen from the air is spectacular. Physically, the region is characterized by numerous rivers and backwaters that are quiet panoramic. The network of waterways is lined with dense, verdant foliage in some places gradually making its way up to streams and creeks up the highland forests. After an extended period of exposure to the image, hopefully the viewer will experience the visual energy that I am painting. Technically, layering for me is an important devise.“

The Maasai people of East Africa live in southern Kenya along the Great Rift Valley on semi-arid and arid lands. They have a population of approximately one half million people. Maasai society is patriarchical in nature with the elders deciding most matters for each Maasai group. They are a semi-nomadic people who live under a communal system. The Maasai live in Kraals arranged in a circular fashion. The fence around the kraal is made of acacia thorns, which prevent lions from attacking the cattle. It is a man’s responsibility to fence the kraal. While women construct the houses. Traditionally, kraals are shared by an extended family. Some of the Maasai people live in Tanzania.

At the close of business, a couple must get together to discuss family issues hence our donation of a “CURVING OF A HAPPY MAASAI COUPLE”.

C�. Hand painted potlatch drum

Prominent and local Coast Salish artist, Chris Paul has created this handmade, 15”, deer hide and red cedar drum. The art featured on the drum is a potlach. To further highlight Victoria’s connection to the native peoples and to emphasise the Victoria Conference Centre as a meeting place, Victoria’s chosen theme for the ICCA 2008 is the “Potlach”. A potlach is a ceremony among certain Native American and First Nations peoples on the Pacific Northwest, such as the Coast Salish, Haida, Tlingit, Tsimshian, Nuu-chah-nulth, and Kwakiutl (Kwakwaka’wakw).Taking place in a “Big House”, the potlach host demonstrates wealth and prominence through giving away their possessions. This prompts participants to reciprocate when they hold their own potlatch.
