TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION November is a month of remembrance for the dead, and cemeteries have long been a focus for prayer. Our tradition holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the “dwelling place of the Holy Spirit,” and has a destiny of life with God in glory. The funeral practices of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Christian funeral litur-gy ended with the relatives and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affection and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrad-ing. Every year on their loved one’s “birthday to life,” the Christians would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Justice, Christ, at the end of days. They were attracted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would often celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Chris-tians were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beautiful difference. —Rev. ENCOURAGEMENT This Sunday’s Gospel is our final selection from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecution or suffering that they would encounter after his resurrec-tion. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel’s time. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribulation in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ’s love will lead us along the way of disciple-ship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright © J. S. Restorative Justice The Christmas season is a most stressful time for someone who is incar-

cerated. A poem written by an inmate in part reads:

I look out my window to be greeted with stares, I yell for help but no one cares.

Here at St. Francis of Assisi we would like to work in cooperation with the Office of Restorative Justice at our Diocese to help coordinate the distribution of thousands of Christmas cards that are given each year to prisons in our Diocese. We are in need of boxes of new, unsigned Christmas cards (especially Spanish-language cards) which are then given to inmates to send home to their families. During this time, we ask for your help in showing our incarnated sisters and brothers that some people do care.

Deadline is Friday, December 7, 2018 in order to meet the pris-ons’ deadlines.

Please no cards that: are scented; contain glitter, tassels, rib-bons, plastic, or pieces that can be removed; no musical cards. Please no cards requesting/requiring donations to an organization. If you are able to help, please drop off your Christmas Cards to the parish office thank you.

ALIENTO El Evangelio de este domingo es nuestra selección final de Marcos para este año litúrgico. Pertenece a las últimas enseñanzas de Jesús en Jerusalén y se en-cuentra inmediatamente antes del relato de su arresto y pasión. En este, Jesús da a sus discípulos esperanza para sostenerlos en su pasión y muerte y en cualquier per-secución o sufrimiento que enfrenten después de su resurrección. Las palabras del libro de Daniel también les brindan esperanza y aliento a los contemporáneos de Daniel. El aliento de estas lecturas también nos sirve a noso-tros, ya que ninguno de nosotros puede evitar transitar tiempos difíciles en su vida. Los seguidores de Jesús podrán soportar el sufrimiento con esperanza porque saben que el amor de Cristo nos guiará para poder ser buenos discípulos y nos dará la vida eterna junto a Dios. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El 19 de noviembre del 1969 (Día del Descubrimiento de Puerto Rico), el Papa Pablo VI declaró a Nuestra Señora Madre de la Divina Providencia, como pa-trona de la Isla del Encanto. Este acto fue el culmen de un largo proceso devocional hacia la Madre de la Divina Providencia empezado por el obispo Catalán Gil Esteve y Tomás quien trajo la primera imagen de la Virgen a la isla Boricua. La imagen actual es de María sentada con su Hijo (la Divina Providencia) dormido sobre su regazo. Ella sostiene la manita izquierda del niño en sus manos mientras lo mira cariñosamente. La imagen inspira ternura y muestra la confianza de María en la Divina Providencia de su Hijo, que aunque este dormido, no se des-cuida de ella ni de los fieles. Esta imagen recuerda el pasaje bíblico en el cual Jesús dormía en la barca de Pedro, despertando a tiempo para calmar los mares y los vientos que la amenaza-ban. Quý ông bà anh chị em thân mến, Tuần trước tôi có chia sẻ bản Tường Trình Tài Chánh của năm, 1 Tháng 7, 2017 tới 30 Tháng 6, 2018 do Hội Đồng Tài Chánh soạn thảo. Bản tường trình cho thấy rõ về phần chi phí hai năm liền đã thâm hụt $57,000. Quý ông bà anh chị em cũng như tôi biết việc điều hành và bảo tồn giáo xứ và các nhà của linh mục rất tốn kém. Giáo xứ chúng ta đã hơn 35 năm tuổi và luôn cần tu bổ và sửa chữa. Là Cha Chánh xứ, tôi có trách nhiệm quản lý tài sản của Chúa tốt và bảo đảm, quý ông bà anh chị em (ÔBACE) hoàn toàn hiểu rằng việc này chỉ có thể làm được với sự giúp đỡ của quý ÔBACE. Xin quý ông bà anh chị em hãy giúp tôi! Tôi nêu ra một vài kinh phí dưới đây để quý ÔBACE có khái niệm những phí tổn giáo xứ chúng ta rất cần để sửa chữa và tân trang trong năm tài chánh vừa qua. Chúng ta đã thay dàn máy lạnh 30 tuổi là $110,000, tân trang các phòng vệ sinh nhà thờ $27,950.39, nâng cấp hệ thống vi tính $17,000, và thay dàn thiết bị nhà bếp bị hỏng (Tủ Đông Lạnh, Tủ Lạnh, và Máy Làm Đá) $13,000. Nêu lại những việc này là để quý ÔBACE thấy giáo xứ chúng ta có rất nhiều sữa chữa và tân trang vì nhiều thiết bị đều liên quan tới số tuổi, giống như tôi và quý ÔBACE mỗi ngày càng thêm tuổi!!! Trong những năm qua khi tôi mời gọi quý ÔBACE giúp đỡ với sự hoàn toàn tin tưởng quý ÔBACE đáp ứng, và quý ÔBACE đã đáp lại với hết cả tấm lòng.
