Upcoming Holy Day of Obligation The Solemnity of All Saints Day
7:00 p.m. Vigil Mass, Thursday, October 31 8:30 a.m. Mass Friday, November 1 7:00 p.m. Mass Friday, November 1
This feast honors all the saints, known and unknown. This feast was first celebrated on May 13, 610, when Pope Boniface IV proclaimed the day Feast of All Holy Martyrs in Rome. The intent was to honor all martyrs who were not included in local records. In 835, Pope Gregory IV changed the date and name to November 1 and Feast of All Saints. There are many saints who are not popularly known or who are not celebrated during the course of the liturgical year. This feast day provides an opportunity to remember and celebrate their lives.
Sunday Reading Reflection Thank you to the fraternal charitable organizations in the parishes, whom Jason and I serve as priests, for the wonderful times of fraternity they have been providing for us all. These tasty times help us get to know each other and this is pure gold. Did
you know however, these moments of welcome comradery and nourishment also double as their way of raising funds to help the poor? It is true. Thank you members of Catholic fraternal charitable organizations. There are many who should join your ranks as I hope they will, for their own benefit and the benefit of the poor whom they serve. Your unity is a clear sign of nothing less than God, the Holy Spirit. Today’s message from God that comes to us through the Holy Scriptures is so apt for our time. Jesus addresses those convinced of their own righteousness. It is so good in our time of spiritual abundance that we can say with confidence, God is ever purifying us of being so convinced. The number of non church goers is increasing exponentially every day. How often do we who go to Church find those who do not (or even those who go to a non Catholic religious organization or even a quasi religious organization like an activist group) accusing us of being hypocrites. It is true we are. And the Gospel clearly commands us to accuse ourselves as such. The righteous are not welcome here. Eventually the righteous will find they are not righteous, and then they will come pouring back and or want to come for the first time. In Christ, Fr. St. Martin

Prayer Families Needed If you have 5 minutes or 10 minutes a day to say a prayer for a newly baptized child and their family, we need you! This helps our new families to feel apart of our larger St. John’s family. We have two celebrations a year to welcome all newly baptized families to our family. So all you need to do is make a commitment for 6 months at a time. Please help by taking a picture . They are in the main entrance to the Church on the table. Make sure you leave the name of the baby, then write your name and address on the slip provided. This will help families and Our family at St. John’s. ~Marion Parker

Our collection this past weekend was: $4,779.00 Our 2nd collection for utilities was: $1,597.00 There is no 2nd collection this weekend. Our 2nd collection for next weekend is for
our mortgage. Did you know that the IRS requires that each time you make a one-time donation of $250 or more to St. John’s we must provide you a written acknowledgment of this donation? Well, fear not! Anytime you donate this amount or larger, you will automatically receive a Tax Donation letter in January, from St. John’s noting this one-time donation, as well as any other donations that you have made throughout the year. So, if you put $25/week in your offertory envelope, and then decided to send in a check for $1,000 for our utility collection, as you had to defrost your windshield on Sunday morning just to get to church and thought about how much that bill might be for St John’s, you will automatically receive a letter in mid-January. Or, are you starting to estimate your 2019 taxes and realize that a one-time donation to St. John’s just might be a very smart financial move? We would love to help you solve that problem. Send us a donation – for the mortgage, the utilities or whatever you would like. If your donation is $250 or more, we will automatically, no request needed, send you the required information in January for your taxes. In any event, even if you do not send in a single donation of $250 or more, we will send you out, upon request, a tax donation letter. We can email, mail it or you can pick it up from the rectory. You just need to ask. However, you do need to be making your weekly donations via the offertory envelopes, Online Giving or through Online Banking / BillPay for us to send you out this statement. Loose cash and checks placed in the offertory basket are not counted – so please use an envelope. Now might be a great time to set up online giving in preparation for your taxes next year. Just go to our website: TownsendCatholic.org and scroll to the bottom of the site until you see the icon for Online Giving. Click on that and you are on your way to helping support St. John’s. To date we have received $19,291.00 towards our goal of $22,305.00 for the Catholic Appeal. Please contact me for more information at: [email protected].
