Hello Everyone,

This issue covers December and January, therefore trying to fit in almost double the copy made my job very difficult. My first priority was to include all dates and information applying to the villages covered by the circulation of this magazine. I do apologise for copy edited down or left out. We are obviously doing something right, as each month I have to turn down new adverts through lack of space. In a way it is really gratifying that we are in such a position.

I would like to wish everyone ‘Compliments of the Season’. I am looking forward to spending sometime with my son and family who live in France. Even though the grandsons are in their thirties I expect there will still be Christmas Stockings and it will be fun catching up with all the news and getting to know their partners. You will see from the report from Ringwould w Kingsdown Parish Council that they have budgeted again for “Front Gardens in Bloom” next year. This year the event generated so much community interest, and the gardens were so pretty it was great. So get planning again! My thanks go to all who contribute to make this publication the success it is. Without everyone we just wouldn’t have a Rural Roundup. Thanks again, Ed.

KINGSDOWN CAROL SINGING

Once again it is time for carol singing around Kingsdown. We welcome everyone to join us for this lovely tradition. There are no auditions, no rehearsals just turn up and sing. It is good fun. Wrap up warmly, bring a torch and we'll provide the carol sheets. This

year we are starting at 6pm at weekends and at 6.30pm on week nights (but you can join us later further along the route) and finishing by 8.30pm. All money collected will be divid-ed between The Church Fabric Fund and The Mission to Seafarers. Donations may be left at Kingsdown Post Office. Looking forward to seeing you.

Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council The Council had a busy and fruitful meeting this month. Members received a report about the success of the recently introduced

Garden in Bloom competition and decided to continue with the project next year. Councillor Doreen Clark who dreamt up and over saw the project has agreed to take the helm again.

Our Community Warden Malcolm Wells updated members on the progress of the Kent County Council consultation and explained that it was still ongoing and no formal decisions had yet been announced.

Councillors considered an application from the Ringwould Village Hall Committee and agreed to provide funding of £2,700 to help provide better heating for the village hall.

An anonymous donor has offered £1,000 to help improve facilities in the Kingsdown playground. Members welcomed the donation and the pllayground will be inspected to see how the funds can best be used.

Councillors agreed to pay for essential repairs and maintenance to the play equipment in the Ringwould playground.

Councillor Sigrist reported that the annual Remembrance Service in St John’s Church had been extremely well attended and that the beavers, cubs and scouts had returned to the Kingsdown Service.

Members heard that funds were being sought in order that the name of Squadron Leader Anthony Downing can be added to the Roll of Honour in St John’s.

The chairman, Councillor MacWilliam, reminded members that there will be an election for the Parish Council next May and asked members to encourage people from both villages to consider standing.

Members were told that a group from the Planning Committee had held a meeting with the East Kent Housing Association about proposals to build a car park on open space in Kings Close. As a result of the meeting the Association has withdrawn its proposals and will submit new proposals which will require less land to Dover District Council.

The next meeting of the Council will be held at the Kingsdown Village Hall on Monday 15

th December, 7.30pm.

KINGSDOWN ROCKS on Saturday 13th December Village Hall has had to be

cancelled due to One Love not being able to perform, A Christmas Quiz will now take place at the School on Saturday 13

th December.

By the time you read this the school will be in the midst of its preparations for Christmas. These include the Infant Nativity, Junior Carol Service, Pantomime and of course the Christmas Fayre. The Christmas Fayre this year will be held on Friday 12th December straight after school. Please come along and support this event, Every penny raised is spent on the children in school. At the end of last term an artist came into school working with the

junior children. During the day three crucifixes were made using a variety of materials. which have been displayed in the entrance hall, hall and in the spiritual garden. This was an amazing opportunity for the children to work alongside an artist, creating original artwork which celebrates our status of being a church school.

Finally may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas and New Year. Jo Hygate

Dear Friends

During the Christmas Season many will be singing favourite Christmas carols and attending one or more of the services that we hold in our parish churches. The services range from Christingle and Carol services through to that very special midnight first communion in Kingsdown, Ripple and Sutton and I look forward to wishing you a very happy Christmas at one of those services. Sometimes when we look behind the meaning of the words in our

carols and songs, they sometimes throw up a completely different or hidden meaning, and although not quite The DaVinci Code, I would like to share with you the Story behind The 12 Days of Christmas Song.

We haven’t always had the freedom to come together to worship and teach and The 12 days of Christmas song was written by Catholics in England as a way of teaching their children, in secret, about the Christian faith. The song's "gifts" helped the children to remember the teachings of the faith. So here is the code:

"True Love" refers to God.

"Me" refers to every Christian.

The other symbols mean the following:

1 Partridge in a Pear Tree = Jesus Christ

2 Turtle Doves = The Old & New Testaments

3 French Hens = Faith, Hope and Charity or the Father, Son and Holy Spirit Trinity

4 Calling Birds = The Four Gospels

5 Golden Rings = First Five Books of the Old Testament

6 Geese-A-Laying = The Six Days of Creation

7 Swans-A-Swimming = The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 12:8-10)

8 Maids-A-Milking = The Eight Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10)

9 Ladies Dancing = The Nine Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)

10 Lords-A-Leaping = The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20)

11 Pipers Piping = Eleven Apostles, not Judas

12 Drummers Drumming = The Twelve Points of Doctrine in the Apostle's Creed

So this Christmas, when you are singing The 12 days of Christmas, see if you can remember the actual meaning of the song, because as we approach advent and Christmas, let’s remember that the reason for the season is to celebrate Christ’s birthday. So, I would just ask you to stop for a moment and reflect on that thought and the difference that it would make to this time of the year if that Holy baby hadn’t been born over 2000 years ago.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported the parishes in the past year and to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Every blessing to everyone at this very special time.

Yours in Christ .Cathy

Kingsdown Art Exhibition The recent Art Exhibition held in St John’s Church, Kingsdown, was a success and raised a clear £463 towards the restoration of the church fabric. There were 31 artists exhibiting, 14 of which recorded total sales of £984. The new floodlighting provided the exhibition space with a much better level of illumination that was greatly appreciated by both the exhibitors and the public. We thank all for attending and making this year’s event such a success. John Gray

Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Clerk: Veronica Harrop (Ronnie) Homestead Farm, Homestead Lane, East Studdal,

Dover CT15 5BU 01304 375 142 Email: [email protected]

Some comments arising from Sutton-by-Dover Parish Council Meeting.

KCC Highways lighting have repaired the street light near ‘Wentways Farm’ in Stoneheap Road, Studdal which has not worked for some time. It has made the unpaved road a little safer in the dark evenings.

The soakaway under the Memorial Garden in Studdal has been completely dug out and replaced with a new soakaway by KCC Highways. This will enhance the drainage system of excess water which has caused problems in Homestead Lane in recent years. Highways are to repair other soakaways and blocked drains in the Homestead Lane area and have been given the funding for this work to be carried out.

A new Parish Council Notice board is to be made by a local carpenter to replace the notice board in Ashley which has become dilapidated.

The next two meetings will be held on Tuesday 2nd

December and Tuesday 6

th January 2015 at 7.30pm in Studdal Church Hall, Downs Rd, Studdal.

Everybody is welcome to come along and support their Parish.

We wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year! Veronica Harrop - Parish Clerk

Secretary: - Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Email:- [email protected]

For our November meeting our speaker was Louise Newell who is a member of a local medieval re-enactment group. Louise told us that after a few years of being a spectator at these events, she realised that the participants were having the most fun. So Louise together

with her husband and young son joined the group about 8 years ago. Louise gave us a fascinating insight into life in medieval times and showed us various items which were used for crafts such as weaving, together with examples of games that were played and the clothing and jewellery worn. Our next meeting will be our Christmas party for members on 8th December at 2.00pm in Kingsdown Village Hall when the Committee will provide the entertainment and refreshments. Then on January 12th we will start our programme for 2015 with a talk by Frances Smith on “Teaching in the East End”. This meeting will be held at Kingsdown Village Hall. Best wishes to all members for the New Year Lisa Souter

Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in December/January

Dec.:- Lorley Brimson, Barbara Brooker, Pat Clarke,Barbara Cox, Anne

Grant, Gillian Heath, Elisabeth Hughes, Lyn Pindar. Jan:- Pat Crawford,

The AGM of the Society was held on 27 October. It turned out to be both a sad and a successful evening. Sad because our long standing Chairman Sue Martin has, after 13 years, retired from the committee. Sue will be greatly missed. Our thanks to Sue for her enthusiasm and total commitment; a leader who led from the

front. Her knowledge, drive and focus will be extremely hard to replace. Successful because we have a full strength committee, a good mix of new and established members. Sadly, the weather has turned; early dark evenings and rain have replaced the sun. I suspect all your gar-dens are in the process of being made ready for winter; greenhouses cleaned and emptied to make room for plants that will be nurtured during the winter months. The Society’s Christmas party (members only) will take place on Monday 24TH November in the school hall. There will be no meeting in December but the next open meeting will be on Monday 26 January 2015. Ronald Steven will be giving a talk entitled “Over the Garden Fence.” In 2015 the committee will be actively looking to its members for direction and ideas. What do you want from your Society? Finally, the committee would like to wish everyone a very happy Christmas and most importantly a healthy New Year. Bob Perry

During the past year, KCG has supported the village and local conservation organisations in a number of different ways: Sponsored the Annual Garage Safari, The Kingsdown Community Survey, The Village Christmas Tree and Lights, Planting Bulbs and Wild Flower Seeds around the Village, Hanging Baskets for the Post Office, Del’s, The Kings Head, The Ox Tale, Indigo and the Village Hall. Made Donations to The Kent Bat Group, Kent Wildlife Trust, Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory, The National Trust and RNLI Dover The Kingsdown Community Survey Team wish to thank all KCG Members who completed and returned the survey. They were delighted with the response. The results will be made public at a meeting in the New Year and the raffle will be drawn at the same time. The date of the meeting will be published on posters in Rural Roundup and in the KCG Bulletin. We wish all our members a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we look forward to enjoying your support and involvement again in 2015
