Air Breathing Propulsion AwardSelection Process
• Only awarded if at least 3 nominations are active• Nominations are active for a total of three cycles• Chronic problems maintaining the requisite 3 active nominations• Currently have 3 active nominations
One nominee will likely receive the 2011 ABP award We need at least one new nomination, preferably more, by October 1st nomination deadline
• Therefore Each TC Chair (ABPSI, GTE, and HSABP) is asked to ensure at least one nomination
package is submitted each year ALL TC members are encouraged to submit nominations POC for 2010/11/12 is Nicole Key. Please have nominator advise POC of “intent to
nominate” as soon as possible
• AIAA has adopted shorter 4 page nomination form for national awards (http://www.aiaa.org/pdf/inside/awardnom.pdf )
• Change to 5 active nominations with reduced nomination requirements has been proposed. If adopted we will require 3 new nominations!!!
Awarded for “Meritorious, Career-Spanning Accomplishment in the Science or Art of Air Breathing Propulsion”

• The selection team’s decision must be endorsed by ane-mail vote of at least 50% of the ABP TC and P&CTC members
• ABP TC chair, P&C TC chair, and Group Director must approve final selection by ensuring process was followed
• Documented, quantitative grading scale (audit trail) with minimum threshold below which award is not given out is required New scoring sheet developed at ASM 2009 For ABP award, minimum threshold is 100 points
(out of a possible 150 points)
• Award presented at the JPC

Gordon C. Oates Student AwardEvaluation Guidance
Score Guidance: Range of 1 - 10, 1 = Poor, 10 = Outstanding
Assessment AreaWeight Factor
Typical Score for good candidate = 6 Additional points awarded for: Points subtracted for:
Research project - technical merit,
originality, scope, & credibility
35%
Innovative project directly related to ABP; project of clear value supported with sound reasoning and impressive results
Industry collaboration/teaming, immediacy of impact, USG/industry contractual sponsorship, thoroughness of investigation, length of investigation; research of exceptional and obvious value to ABP; high quality/quantity results
Project of limited ABP relevancy; no/limited results (plans only); questionable technical value / "sandbox" nature, faulty reasoning, funding "granted" rather than "earned"; project of limited innovation
Career Goals 20%
Essay demonstrates enthusiasm for future; typically discusses "Where I want to work..."
Essay shows personal goals of clear technical vision and exceptional enthusiasm, personal commitment, and desire. "What I want to accomplish..."
No clear vision for career; just wants a job. "What I want to earn…"
Recommendations 20%
Very good recommendation; typically from at least Faculty Advisor and Department Chairman
Recommendations of exceptional endorsement (i.e. "best student ever"); recommendations from AIAA advanced members (i.e. Fellows) or national known ABP leaders; recommendations from outside of student's own university, especially from industry or USG representatives
No recommendation from Department Chairman; recommendations of limited enthusiasm; recommendations of limited source diversity
Academic Credentials 15%Very good GPA (i.e. 3.7/4.0) in graduate studies covering relevant curriculum
Outstanding GPA (i.e. 3.8-4.0/4.0) in graduate and/or undergraduate studies; exceptional depth of curriculum; degrees from different Universities including those nationally renown for ABP research
Less impressive GPA in either graduate or undergraduate studies, less impressive/hollow curriculum
Work Experience 10%
Has worked in various related areas mainly in university environment and has published at least a few technical papers based on that work
Has worked in various assignments of clear technical value both inside and outside of University environment. Has demonstrated results from prior work assignments, has published technical papers of clear & relevant technical merit.
Has performed only as research assistant on specific project. Has very limited/no publications.
100%Tiebreaker considerations: Candidate has overcome adversity in route to graduate studies, comes from a financially disadvantage background, has been financially self-sufficient through school, is especially active in community, supports a family, is active in AIAA, is female and/or minority.

Best Paper AwardsSelection Process
• Each TC (ABPSI, HSABP, GTE) selects a best paper from their respective sessions at the prior year JPC and current year ASM Session chairs identify best paper from their respective technical sessions The best paper focal forms a selection team Selection follows a judging process and selection criteria Each TC develops their own process, for example
The best of the best papers is then selected
• Award presented at the current year JPC
