Parade begins promptly at 11am in front of Clubhouse 2 and goes around the entire inner circle where pictures will be taken and enjoyed for the August Adobian. GUEST PARKING ONLY MEANS GUESTS. WHAT ABOUT THE RESIDENTS?
Are you confused because every available parking spot outside your home has been tagged
with guest parking only? Not only is it confusing, it is annoying. Adobe Wells has become
the only park in Sunnyvale owned by Brandenburg, Staedler & Moore to have “contracted
towing” and it is unclear as to where we can now park and for how long.
It is imperative that our “fire lanes” remain open at all times. Should there be an emergency we want the first responders to have immediate access. Having said that I
spoke to both Norm and Janis in the office, and l will attempt to provide as much information
as possible from the conversation with them.
*Absolutely no unattended parking in front of any home, as towing is strictly enforced.
Should you need to park in the fire lane, please be aware of your car at all times and do not
leave it unattended. This includes RV loading and unloading. Contractors must have signs on
vehicle and /or orange cones at the front and back of said vehicle.
* Parking around the green area in spaces stating “guest parking” is permitted with the
following guidelines. Using the facilities,(Clubhouse 1 or 2, laundry, pool, gym, tennis
court, or basketball court, playground,) or while visiting neighbors. However, this is with the
understanding that you may receive a disturbing notice from the park management, stating
that your car will be towed if your car receives two notices, letting management know where
you were and the notice should be removed from your file. Please note that your car will
automatically be towed after the second notice unless your file has been cleared.
*Apparently there is no consideration given for ADA individuals who may be visiting your
home. Should you have grandparents, elderly parents, or handicapped individuals visiting
you, you are not allowed to park your vehicle around the green area while they park in your
driveway. This is of great concern to me as the green area is not nor has it ever been
considered a “fire lane”. Adobe Wells residents have had free access to park our cars around
the green area without consequence. The inner circle road has always been accessible for
parking except from midnight till 8AM.
*There is also no consideration for tenant parking should your home be under repair.. Where
are residents supposed to park if they cannot move their cars to the guest parking while
contractors are at work? This is especially difficult to comprehend when the individual is
elderly or ADA. Management stated to me that no permission for residents to park their cars
to accommodate workmen will be given – no exceptions.
* Overnight guest parking was restricted to the drive in parking areas so there was never an
issue regarding parking around the green between midnight and 8AM. What do they do now?
It is my opinion that Adobe Wells residents should have received a clearly defined letter
from the corporate office at: 1122 Willow St #200, San Jose, CA 95125 specifically stating
our parking privileges. Please feel free to contact them with your concerns and comments.

Recipes from a Farm Cook by Mary Ann Calhoun
Time to spice up the traditional July 4th celebration dinner by serving a new version of
the grilled hamburger. I tasted Basil Burgers for the first time while visiting a college
friend in Washington. They certainly offer a tasty treat from the usual grilled fare. The
second recipe for Spicy Cheeseburgers comes from a "Taste of Home" magazine.
Basil Burgers serves 4
2 tablespoons minced fresh basil or 2 teaspoons dried basil
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/4 cup cream cheese, softened
4 onion rolls; split
4 slices red onion
1 medium avocado, peeled and sliced
In a bowl, combine the first five ingredients. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well.
Shape into four patties. Grill uncovered, over medium heat for 5-7 minutes on each side
or until juices run clear. Spread cream cheese over cut side of roll tops. Place cooked
burgers, onion and avocado on roll bottoms; replace tops. Enjoy
Spicy Cheeseburgers serves 8
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 teaspoons minced garlic
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons Liquid Smoke (optional)
1 teaspoon lemon-pepper
!/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
3 pound ground beef
8 slices pepper Jack cheese
8 hamburger buns, split
lettuce leaves and tomato slices (optional)
In a large bowl combine the first 10 ingredients. Crumble beef over mixture then mix
well. Shape into eight patties. Grill, uncovered, over medium heat for 7-8 minutes on
each side or until no longer pink. Top with cheese. Grill 3-5 minutes longer or until
cheese is melted. Serve on buns with lettuce and tomato if desired.

How to control grasshoppers using organic and least-toxic methods
Description
Grasshoppers are voracious feeders, consuming approximately one-half of their body weight
per day. Both adults and nymphs cause damage by chewing on the leaves and stems of
plants, and if infestations are severe, may defoliate entire fields. It is estimated that
grasshoppers consume up to 25 percent of the available forage in the western United States
annually.
Adults (1-2 inch long) are brown to reddish yellow or green in color with prominent jaws,
fully developed wings, and short antennae. They have enlarged hind legs and can jump great
distances. Immature stages, or nymphs, are similar in appearance to adults, but are smaller
and have wing buds instead of wings.
Note: Ten adults per square yard are economically damaging to rangeland, according to the
USDA. Smaller numbers can damage cropland or gardens, depending on crop type and age.
A classic study showed that 6-7 adults per square yard on 10 acres of pasture ate as much as
a cow.
Life Cycle The injurious species of grasshoppers are all alike in their cycle of development. Eggs are
deposited in late summer in elongated masses or pods inserted in the soil. These pass through
the winter, and on hatching in the spring, the young seek food in the immediate area. As they
increase in size and food becomes scarce, migration to other food sources takes place. After
molting 5 or 6 times, during a period of 40-60 days, the adults appear and continue feeding
until cold weather kills them. One generation per year in most areas.
Control Roto-till or cultivate crops in the spring to destroy overwintering eggs.
Harvest-Guard row covers can be used to protect small garden areas.
For long-term grasshopper protection, apply Organic Semaspore Bait (Nosema locustae) to
hatching beds – field margins and other undisturbed grassy areas – when grasshoppers are
young. Heavy infestations may require multiple Semaspore applications.
Spread EcoBran or apply botanical insecticides to areas where you are experiencing heavy
grasshopper damage and require a quick-kill.
Buy Praying Mantis early in the season, we just purchased two nests which will produce
200-400, ¼ inch mantises this year.
Tip: Mow a “clean” strip between grassy fields and your garden area to help slow
grasshopper migration. Pests are reluctant to enter the strip because it has no food, and they
are very exposed to predators. A wider strip is better, especially if the adjacent area is large.
Note: A region which had a grasshopper problem in a previous year probably will also have
an infestation the next year – the decline of the problem is generally gradual. Weather will
affect the current year’s hatch, but USDA studies show that, on the average, much of the
previous year’s problem is passed on to the next year.

A lending library off the large living room has a variety of books and tapes to borrow. You can play Ping Pong in Clubhouse one; Billiard rooms are located in both clubhouses. Tennis courts, a basketball court, car wash area and children’s playground are located near Clubhouse 2. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to approach the Adobe Wells office staff who are more than happy to be of assistance.

Rough, crushed egg shells placed around the base of plants
is a great deterrent for slugs. Plus it provides necessary calcium to the soil as

The Text Message You Should Never Open Contribution by Dave Mervis
Mobile phones are increasingly becoming the most important part of people’s work and
social lives – which means they’re more and more vulnerable to attack.
The next text message you receive could ruin your life.
Increasingly, SMS messages are being used as a way of duping people into giving up their
online accounts, and out of their identities and their money.
Many of those messages arrive looking perfectly innocent, and even useful. But they could
be incredibly dangerous – and so it’s important to make sure to know how to spot them.
One of the major problems with such scams is that it is now relatively easy to pretend to be
someone else, over text. The technology that powers texts allows people to put custom
names in when they send messages – allowing people to easily pretend to be Google,
Apple or anybody else.
As such, the main thing is to never give any information over text message, and only use it
as a way of showing alerts. You never know who is texting you, or who you are texting – so
treat it with extreme caution.
iCloud scams
One of the more recent scourges coming over SMS are iCloud scams. They aim to trick
people into giving up the password that they use to get into their Apple account – and, once
hackers are into that, then they can easily get your bank account details, your location, and
more scary stuff besides.
Most of these notifications just work like traditional phishing scams, where cyber criminals
pretend to be a company so that users send them details. But because they are done
through the very personal but notoriously sketchy technology of SMS, they can be easy to
spot.
It isn’t clear why there has been such a huge amount of these in recent months, but reports
of them definitely do seem to be surging. The advice is the same as traditional phishing:

responsible companies will never ask you to reply to a message with your personal details,
or tell you to click on a dodgy link, so make sure that you always only give your information
to official websites and be careful that you are.
Two-factor authentication
Another more new development is tricks that try and get around the two-factor
authentication that many products now have built in – and which, for the most part, serves
as a big problem for people breaking into your account. That's why it's also become such a
security risk.
Two-factor authentication works by attaching a phone number to a person’s account. When
they try to log-in, it will send a unique code to that phone number, and that has to be typed
into the site. It’s built to foil people who steal passwords and then use them to get into
accounts, because it requires physical access to the phone; and that’s why people are now
trying to get around it with scams.
One highlighted this weekend shows a message that claims to be from Google and tells
people that their account may have been hacked. If they want to have it shut down, it says,
they need to reply to the message with the 6-digit verification code that they are about to
receive.
It’s a sneaky way of getting people to put the authentication message that they have
received from Google into a text message so that scammers can get around the security
setup. But it’s a curiously convincing one.
Again, the key is never to enter any important codes into a text message or any
unverified sites. And sites such as Google and others that use two-factor
authentication will only ever send you the messages if you ask for them; if you’re
receiving them without asking, it probably means someone is trying to break into
your account.
