Wi-Drive User’s Guide

1 Introduction

1.1 About Dension Wi-Drive

Dension Wi-Drive allows a vehicle to become part of your home or office wireless network. When the vehicle is parked within your WLAN's coverage area, Wi-Drive can be set to regularly connect with your home computer, and automatically and wirelessly synchronize your car's storage with the multimedia content on your home PC.

By plugging in a 3G USB dongle, or via your 3G Phone, your car can become an Access Point, giving Internet access to any wireless device in the vehicle. Passengers can check their email, kids can surf the net; the world is literally at your fingertips.

Based on the Dension Wi-Drive platform new software applications can offer more and more interesting applications, such as Internet radio, e-mail access, and many more.

Visit www.dension.com/widrive in order to get the latest news and feature improvements on Dension Wi-Drive.

1.4 Wi-Drive Utility Software

Wi-Drive Utility (WDU) is a software tool which runs on your home or office computer to set Wi-Drive connection parameters and manage downloads.

Normally WDU runs in the background, and it automatically detects, when Wi-Drive is connecting. WDU informs you with a popup message, and it performs automatic synchronization with specified folders, or you can perform manual downloads to Wi-Drive as a Network Attached Storage or via FTP.

Of course your computer must be able to establish Wi-Fi connection with Wi-Drive. Your options are:

Use a Wi-Fi router - Wi-Drive should be set as a Station (like a notebook)

Directly with your Wi-Fi laptop - Wi-Drive should be set as an Access Point (AP, like a Wi-Fi Router).

1.5 Wi-Drive Operating Modes

DURING Ignition OFF

Standby/Sleep mode

Wi-Drive is inactive and waits only for scheduled wakeups, or any other change in input status (ignition, Push button, timeout). On wakeups Wi-Drive will enter Access Point and/or Station mode as configured. Ignition on will enter Wi-Drive to Access Point mode if configured; short Push button press will enter Wi-Drive to Access Point/Station mode as configured.

Car radio can access (play) the pen-drive connected to Wi-Drive’s USB Storage slot.

Access Point mode

Wi-Drive provides an Access Point (if configured) and allows clients to log in as if it was a regular Wi-Fi router. After entering this mode Wi-Drive stays on for 5 minutes or as long WDU or 3G network is connected. Upon time-out or disconnection Wi-Drive enters Station mode. Short Push button press enters Wi-Drive to Station mode.

If car radio is turned ON when WDU connected, the data transfer will be closed and car radio can access (play) the pen-drive connected to Wi-Drive’s USB Storage slot.

6 How to use, practical usage guide

6.1 Internet radio operation

If you have active 3G Internet connection you can play Internet radio stations on your radio. Download the Internet radio configuration files (from www.dension.com/widrive) to a pendrive and plug it in to one of the USB Extension ports while playing music from the Storage memory. Wi-Drive will enter to Internet radio mode and play the first Internet radio playlist

Wi-Drive User’s Guide

file. You can edit the pre-set stations by changing the playlists in the /netradio directory. Please use maximum 5 playlists on a single pendrive. Wi-Drive supports pls and m3u playlists.

You can turn off Internet radio mode by plugging out the configuration pendrive.

6.2 Wireless download/synchronization

While the car is parked Wi-Drive mainly spends it’s time in Sleep/Standby mode. The USB Storage device is connected to the Wi-Fi engine; hence the car stereo does not need it, anyway. On a scheduled rhythm Wi-Drive wakes up, and looks for available Wi-Fi networks. If both AP and Station modes are enabled, than Wi-Drive provides the preset Acces Point network first, and waits for 5 minutes for any client connection. If no Clients are connected, then Wi-Drive switches to Station mode and looks for all the predefined networks. If none of these are available in 20 seconds, then Wi-Drive goes to Sleep/Standby mode again.

If one or other mode is not enabled, then it’s period is implicitly missing.

6.3 Downloading vs. listening to music

You cannot both download/sync and listen to your music stored on the USB Storage at the same time. If Wi-Drive woke up from a sleep on schedule, download has priority. The USB Storage is constantly ready to receive new content, as long as WDU is connected. So, if you turn the head unit on during a scheduled download, no music will be heard, and download won't stop. If Wi-Drive woke up on Push button press, Ignition key on or radio on events, playback has a priority. It means if a playback is in progress and WDU connects, the USB Storage won't be taken away, music keeps on playing and WDU will report a download error. This situation persists as long as the radio is on. Once the radio is off (more precisely, it has released the USB Storage), WDU can download new content. If the radio is turned on in the middle of a download, the transfer stops and WDU will complain about transfer problems.

When the car is in use again, then the USB Storage device is connected back to the radio, and you can enjoy the new, wirelessly downloaded content.

6.4 Wi-Drive as an Access Point

When the car is on (Ignition key is turned on, or the engine is running) then Wi-Drive connects the USB Storage port to the Radio, and provides Access Point operation according to the settings. If a 3G modem is connected to the USB Extension port, than a 3G internet access is established and shared on-demand.

When the car is turned off, then AP mode stays on for 5 minutes, or until 3G Internet is up.

6.5 Car Battery protection

In normal installation cases Wi-Drive uses the car’s battery during the regularly scheduled download activity. Since download may take a long time (hours), the car battery has to be protected against discharge.

Wi-Drive features a dual level battery protection scheme. Wi-Drive continuously monitors the voltage level of the car battery, and when it reaches a preset level (11,7V) Wi-Drive activates a graceful disconnection process, i.e. the connection will be terminated after the pending file has been transferred. If the files are large in size, and the transfer may not finish quickly enough, Wi-Drive maintains a second protection level (11,5V), where it turns off unconditionally. The same protection is active if clients are connected in Access Point mode.

Wi-Drive User’s Guide

6.6 Firmware update

If allowed, WDU can download the latest firmware for Wi-Drive. After downloading it to your PC, WDU will send the file to Wi-Drive when connection established (free space needed on the storage). Wi-Drive will read the update and reboot itself.

You can also update the firmware manually, by copying the update file to a USB Flash drive and insert it into Wi-Drive.

6.7 Copying large amount of data

If you have a large music collection (8-64 GB or larger) that you would like to use with Wi-Drive and synchronize additional content we suggest the following procedure.

First connect the USB storage directly to your PC and copy the content. Then connect your storage to Wi-Drive in the car and setup the synchronization settings in WDU, so additional files/folders will be synchronized automatically. Please make sure that the folders on your PC and the folder on your USB storage is set in the sync setting as you initially copied the content. Of course, you can perform the initial copy by the synchronization, however with large collections it can take a longer time over WLAN.

6.8 Network attached storage management

You can manage the content on the USB Storage connected to Wi-Drive like a Network attached storage. In order to do this, start WDU, specify the drive letter WDU shall use, check the “Keep device connected”, switch on Wi-Drive and establish the Wi-Fi connection. WDU will connect, and from Windows you can manage the content on the specified drive letter. Do not forget to disconnect Wi-Drive, by un-checking the “Keep device connected”, or clicking on “Disconnect now” button.

6.9 Clock

Wi-drive’s internal clock is updated by WDU upon connection. If Wi-Drive is powered from a cigarette lighter that does not provide continuous power, Wi-Drive’s clock and wakeup schedule will be out of date.

7 Quick reference guideTurn on Wi-Drive from Sleep/Standby mode

You can turn-on Wi-Drive by the following ways:

Switch-on ignition.

Press the Push button for 2 seconds.

Wait for the scheduled wake-up.

Turn off Wi-Drive

You can turn-off Wi-Drive by the following ways:
