WITH SUPPORT FROM:

CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical SciencesRocky Mountain Chapter of the National Association of

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP)

TARGET AUDIENCE Advanced Practice Nurses, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Physicians, and other health care professionals who are seeking updated information for practice specific to the provider role in caring for pediatric and young adult populations in primary, ambulatory and urgent care settings.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis conference will provide clinical updates in evidence-based care for a variety of diagnoses for advanced practice providers. In addition, many of the presentations integrate pharmacy content presented by expert clinical pharmacists. Professional issues related to practice will also be addressed. Day one offers an opening Keynote address, plenary sessions, a panel presentation and three breakout session options in the afternoon. Day two includes plenary sessions with a Closing Keynote address during lunch to conclude the conference.

OBJECTIVESUpon completion of this conference, participants should be able to:

• Identify provisions of the Affordable Care Act that will impact health care providers in 2014.

• Explain medical/legal ramifications of marijuana use in Colorado and its impact on children.

• Formulate discussion scenarios for anticipatory guidance with parents and guardians of children and adolescents related to marijuana exposure or ingestion.

• Differentiate signs of common mental illnesses from effects of medications (“medication mimics”) in children and determine appropriate treatment modalities.

• Outline best practice in caring for children with stable solid organ transplants and assessments required to maintain good outcomes.

• Using normal growth and development parameters, question whether endocrine, orthopedic and urologic variations are outside the norm and the level of concern.

• Demonstrate anticipatory guidance for developmentally appropriate behaviors and develop processes to discuss “bad news” when the behaviors aren’t appropriate and a new diagnosis is given.

• Identify actions such as splinting or lab work that should be done prior to sending a child to the ED for further care.

• Employ guidelines for evaluation of children and adolescents with constipation and when to treat.

• Accurately interpret signs of sleep disordered breathing and know when and where to refer for intervention, and provide parents with accurate information.

• Define antimicrobial stewardship; demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based guidelines for antimicrobial use and model best practice behaviors that support stewardship.

• Identify risk factors and consequences of major life events in the adolescent world. Describe and discuss opportunities as providers for improved outcomes for at-risk adolescents.
