BEHAVIOUR

Our staff work really hard to support students with their behaviour needs. Support from home is also greatly appreciated. We continually talk to our students about bullying and ‘mean’ kids and what they need to do if they feel upset or unsafe. Please talk to your children at home too. Remind them to tell a staff member so we can deal with issues promptly. If your child is being mean or bullying others, please continue to support our efforts at school by reinforcing the actions or conse-quences we put in place. We really appreciate your support with this.

VALUE OF THE TERM -

INTEGRITY

Integrity - to be honest, accountable for one’s conduct and behaviour, and act ethically.

Integrity is our ability to act in ways consistent with the values, beliefs, and moral principles we claim to hold. Derived from integer, the Latin word for whole or complete, it refers to a human state of virtue and wholeness. Beyond a single ability, integrity is a collection of virtues, including honesty, courage, honor, respect, responsibility, restraint, and authenticity.

Despite societal forces that test integrity, most people agree that children deserve a world that values truth, honesty, and justice. As the basis of social harmony and action, integrity plays a critical role in civil society as well as democracy.

Children are not born with integrity or the behaviours we associate with it, including humility, social responsibility, and the courage to stand up for what they believe is right. It is derived through a process of cultural socialization—influences from all spheres of a child’s life.

This process begins at home. Over the next term the 9 ways to build integrity will be shared with you.

Our term whakatauki is

Hurihia to aroaro ki te ra tukuna to atarangi kia taka ki muri i a koe.

Pepeha Mural Blurb: There is a new Mural hung on the wall outside of Room 8. The Mural is representing our Pepeha. From the mountains of Remutaka and the Rivers of Te Awakairangi we have created a mural that stands for the Upper Hutt citizens! On the Mural we have added a Pounamu, Piupiu, and we also added some feathers that are strongly related to Parihaka. The feathers also symbolise peace for the iwi, the settlers and the land. That is what we think Upper Hutt people in Upper Hutt want and do.

PERIOD PRODUCTS

The access to period products initiative aims to provide free period products to children and young people in all state and state-integrated schools and kura across New Zealand during 2021. Access to period products is a necessity, not a luxury. The need to access period products exists for every young person who experiences menstruation. This nationwide government funded initiative allows Trentham School to provide each menstruating student with up to two packs of period products for themselves (pads and/or tampons) each month free of charge. These will be available from a cupboard in the Medical Room. Please encourage your child to collect their product once a month. We want to stress that this service is available to all menstruating students at Trentham School and hope that they all take advantage of this wonderful initiative.

STUDENT LED

LEARNING CONVERSATIONS

Wednesday 18 August & Thursday 19 August 2021

How to book your student led learning conversation

To book your learning conversation time follow these simple steps: Go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and click on Make a Booking. Enter the school event code h4eqd and click Go.

You then complete 3 simple steps to book conferences for each of your children: 1. Enter your details 2. Choose teachers 3. Choose times Bookings will be confirmed and emailed to you.

All conference bookings must be made by Thursday 12 August, 3.00pm. If you have not made a booking by this date, one will be made for you. We are aware that not all our families have access to a computer and the internet.

Please pop in or ring the school office and they will do your bookings for you, ph 528 6485.

Things to remember

Your child will run the learning conversation—not you, not the teacher! Your child must be here.

All students have been putting considerable time and energy into preparing for this. It is a chance for them to shine and celebrate their progress. Our experience is that children are very motivated and proud to share their learning journey with their whanau. If you are unable to attend, please arrange for another significant adult in your child’s life to come in your place.

The conference is about learning—not behaviour or social issues. If you or the teacher have concerns here another meeting will need to be arranged.

We may be filming some of the learning conversations so that teachers can use this to reflect and constantly improve what they are doing. Please let us know if you do not want to be filmed.

Most importantly, enjoy the opportunity to see your child in his/her key learning environment and celebrate your child’s progress to date.

What is a student led learning conversation?

A student led learning conversation is a meeting with parents led by the student. This is an opportunity for students to share with their whanau their growth as a learner. They will share samples of work, discuss what they have learned and the progress they’ve made, and they may undertake some activities with their parents to show their learning.

This process is a big change for both students and parents, but one that is exciting and rewarding!

Page 5: 4th August 2021 Term 3 ewsletter 11trentham.school.nz/assets/Newsletters/Newsletter-12-Wk2... · 2021. 8. 15. · Solé du Plessis, Teacher, R13 David Groves, Teacher, R6 airo N,

Why have student led learning conversations?

The main purposes of student led learning conversations are to celebrate a child’s learning, show growth over time, and provide parents with a better insight and understanding of their child’s learning. Students are actively involved in the learning and reporting process.

Preparing students for learning in the 21st century requires teachers to allow students to be agentic and take responsi-bility for their own learning, and what better way than through sharing their learning with whanau.

What does the research say?

At Trentham School we are focused on improving student outcomes. Research and theory shows that developing stu-dents’ ability to talk about their learning and their progress makes a difference.

Professor John Hattie’s revised list of the most effective influences on student achievement, identifies student self-reporting as the most significant indicator linked to raised student achievement.

“If the focus is to be kept on learning, and the ownership of the learning with the child, then the best person to talk about the learning is the learner…” “Not only is the student the best person to tell their parents what they have learnt, but if we believe that students build their knowledge by communicating what they know, then providing an opportuni-ty for the students to tell their family what they know can significantly assist with that learning.” Absolum (2006) Research by Epstein and Bastiani also shows that parental involvement in schools and classrooms has a positive impact on children’s learning.

How will student led learning conversations work?

Your child will do most of the talking. They will tell you the things he or she has been working on in class, how they are going and their next learning steps.

Learning conversations last up to 30 minutes. You do not have to stay this long if your child has finished sharing his/her learning.

3-4 student led conversations will be held at the same time in your child’s classroom. The teacher’s role during student led learning conversations is that of a facilitator. The teacher will rove and sup-

port students when required and answer any questions you may have. The teacher will spend some time with you and your child during the conversation to look at goal setting.

For younger year groups, stations will be set up for students and whanau to move around. Students will show you their learning through these activities.

Your role is to ask your child questions about their learning as they share with you.

Questions you can ask: How are you feeling about being in this class? Tell me about your friends in the class and/or school? What are you learning to do in … reading/writing/maths? What are your next steps for learning in GROW? What work have you really enjoyed doing? Which area of learning do you find easiest? Why? Which area of learning do you find trickiest? Why? What could we do together to help you with this learning?
