YEAR AT A GLANCE 2015 ¢ Although some classrooms (*) have technology or maker enhanced projects on display for open house, many more have taken place since the school year has begun. We are excited about the many maker adventures we have taken so far this year and look forward to further developing our maker movement. Thank you for your support and patience as we iterate our design thinking approach towards integrating hands on projects that tie into the curriculum. INNOVATION AT BACICH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

TECHNOLOGY

† APPRECIATIONS ¢

Tools complementing hands on exploratory projects that engage our students and bring learning to life are only possible with the generous donations of the Kentfield PTA and the KIK Foundation.

A special tinkering thanks to the Kentfield community for contributing to make Bacich and Kent 21st-Century schools that provide our students with endless opportunities to explore and discover their passions.

“Students engaged in direct experience with materials, unforeseen obstacles, and serendipitous discoveries may result in an

understanding never anticipated by the teacher.”

MAKING

Find out more about Genius Hour, hands on Rancho Day activities, Geometric Domes, Design Challenges, Google Presentations, Makey Makeys, Hour of Code, E Books on Explain Everything and more on our maker blog.

4th Grade *Room 25 Ms. Davis - The Coded Saturn Catch a glimpse of a Makey Makey project that uses coding to explore the planet Saturn. *Room 24 Mrs. Washburn - Geometry Around Us! Check out a collaborative math project that displays attributes of shapes, lines, and angles from our school. Other Maker or Tech Enhanced Projects that have taken place: • Paper Circuits - Students explored circuitry and

tinkered with building a simple paper circuit. • Squishy Circuits - Students used homemade

conductive dough to power LEDs, buzzers, and motors.

• LegoWeDo kits- allow students to collaborate with a building partner to construct programmable models to code.

3rd Grade *Rooms 21 and 26 Mrs. Bozeman & Mr. Taylor School Design Project Come see what these third graders have designed for our new learning space improvements with Measure D funds. * Room 20 Mrs. Lindsay/Mrs. Allen-Huges

Engineering Bridges Stop by room 20 to check out how shapes and symmetry helped build strong bridges. Other Maker or Tech Enhanced Projects that have taken place: • Makey Makey - Students turn everyday conductive

objects into programmable functions with this user friendly circuit board.

1st/2nd Grades *Rooms 1-6 1st Grade Classrooms The Three Pigs Engineering Project Come see how first grade students tackled this engineering challenge: Design and build a house for the "fourth" little pig. Can you build a house that will withstand the huffing and puffing of the big, bad wolf?

Tk/Kindergarten *Room 9 Ms. Johnson - Roominate Students can build and engineer houses and vehicles with lights, battery packs, and much more! Other Maker or Tech Enhanced Projects that have taken place: • Bee-Bots - What fun we had programming the

Bees towards numbers and letters on a map. Students challenged one another to program the Bee-Bot to a particular square. We explored letters, numbers and shapes while having a tangible experience with coding.

• Basket Weaving with Mrs. Libby Students created baskets to complement their studies about Native Americans. • Coding - Students were introduced to coding through

various apps including: Scratch, Angry Birds, and Frozen.

• Find out more about Google Presentations, E Books on Explain Everything,PBL integration, marble runs and more on our maker blog.

• Coding - Students were introduced to coding through the iPad app, Kodable.

• Sewing letter pillows with safe needles and burlap.

• To celebrate Engineer’s week, we constructed corner bookmarks with careful cutting and folding.

Other Maker or Tech Enhanced Projects that have taken place: • Nim Game - Students creatively planned and

designed a game to tie into their Heritage studies. • Robo Wheels - Students helped each other build

and understand balance and motion. • Balance Magic - allowed students to explore

balance by altering the center of gravity, the resting point, and weight with their design.

• Bee-Bots - The Bee-Bots’ challenged first grades to place value numbers while having a tangible coding experience.

• Coding - Students were introduced to coding through various apps including: Scratch Junior, Light Bot, Angry Birds, and Frozen.

• Find out more about LED Throwies, Arcade Day, PBL, Gumdrop Challenge, marble runs, Not a Box projects, Heritage Day Projects and more on our maker blog.
