CANDELARIA DAY
FEB. 2 is the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemas Day. There will be a blessing of candles at the 12Noon Mass (English) at the beginning of the Mass.
FEB. 3 commemorates St. Blaise, and it is a traditional day for blessing of throats. Because of the pandemic, the blessing will be said over the congregation without the laying on of candles to each throat. A brief service will be held in English at 12Noon on Feb. 3. The blessing will take place in Spanish at the 7:00PM Mass in Spanish on Feb. 3.

On Tuesday, February 2nd, the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. The Feast of the Presentation occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas day, since the blessing and procession of candles is still at times, included in the liturgy of February 2nd.
In days past, this day was referred to as the "Purification of Mary." This was known as a "Christmas feast" since it points back to the Solemnity of Christmas.
This is the day when, "In obedience to the Old Law, the Lord Jesus, the first-born, was presented in the Temple by his Mother Mary and his foster father. This is another 'epiphany' celebration insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the blessing of candles on this day.
This week we will be celebrating Ascension Regional School in conjunction with Catholic Schools Weeks. Today is the first day of this special week. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2021 is “Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service.” The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. Catholic schools have a specific purpose to form students to be good citizens of the world, love God and neighbor, and enrich society with the message of the gospel and by example of faith.
First, schools are meant to be institutions of learning. Hopefully through learning, Catholic school students learn to understand that their greatest strength is in the service of other people. That is a core gospel value taught by Jesus over and over again. Service enables us to become good leaders. Jesus was a powerful leader, and clearly his most powerful tool as a leader was his willingness to serve the needs of other people. This is why Jesus was so ‘successful’ in his mission. His mission wasn’t centered around himself, it was centered around others, particularly those who were most in need.
The annual observance starts today, the last Sunday in January and runs thru Friday, February 5th. Most schools, and our school in particular, typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a special Mass, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large. Because of the ongoing COVID Pandemic, celebrations will be limited and curtailed this week. A portion of the school children will be attending a special Mass this week.
The limited events marking Catholic Schools Week can be found on Ascension School’s website: http://ascensionschoolnyc.org/. Ascension School opened its doors in the Fall of 1912. Our school has been serving our local community for more than 100 years and the Ascension Regional School hope to continue our commitment to the education and spiritual formation of our children for many years into the future. Estimados Feligreses y Amigos de Ascencion,
El martes 2 de febrero la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de la Presentación del Señor. La Fiesta de la Presentación ocurre cuarenta días después del nacimiento de Jesús y también se conoce como el día de la Candelaria, ya que la bendición y procesión de cirios todavía en ocasiones se incluye en la liturgia del 2 de febrero.
En el pasado, este día se conocía como la "Purificación de María". Esto se conocía como una "fiesta de Navidad", ya que se remonta a la Solemnidad de Navidad.
Este es el día en que, "En obediencia a la Ley Antigua, el Señor Jesús, el primogénito, fue presentado en el Templo por su Madre María y su padre adoptivo. Esta es otra celebración de 'epifanía' en la medida en que el Niño Jesús es Revelado como el Mesías a través del cántico y las palabras de Simeón y el testimonio de la profetisa Ana. Cristo es la luz de las naciones, de ahí la bendición de las velas en este día.
Esta semana celebraremos la Escuela Regional Ascencion junto con las Semanas de las Escuelas Católicas. Hoy es el primer día de esta semana especial. Las escuelas católicas tienen el propósito específico de formar a los estudiantes para que sean buenos ciudadanos del mundo, amen a Dios y al prójimo y enriquezcan a la sociedad con el mensaje del evangelio y con el ejemplo de fe.
Primero, las escuelas están destinadas a ser instituciones de aprendizaje. Con suerte, a través del aprendizaje, los estudiantes de escuelas católicas aprenden a comprender que su mayor fortaleza está en el servicio a otras personas. Ese es un valor fundamental del evangelio enseñado por Jesús una y otra vez. El servicio nos permite convertirnos en buenos líderes. Jesús fue un líder poderoso, y claramente su herramienta más poderosa como líder fue su disposición a servir las necesidades de otras personas. Por eso Jesús tuvo tanto éxito en su misión. Su misión no se centró en sí mismo, se centró en los demás, en particular en los más necesitados.
La celebración anual comienza hoy, el último domingo de enero y termina el viernes 5 de febrero. La mayoría de las escuelas, y nuestra escuela en particular, normalmente celebran la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas con una misa especial, jornadas de puertas abiertas y otras actividades para los estudiantes, las familias, los feligreses y la comunidad en general. We pray you, O God of might, wisdom, and justice, through whom authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment decreed, assist with your Holy Spirit of counsel and fortitude the President of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to your people, over whom he presides; by encouraging due respect for virtue and religion; by a faithful execution of the laws in justice and mercy; and by restraining vice and immorality.
Let the light of your divine wisdom direct the deliberations of Congress, and shine forth in all the proceedings and laws framed for our rule and government, so that they may tend to the preservation of peace, the promotion of national happiness, the increase of industry, sobriety, and useful knowledge; and may perpetuate to us the blessing of equal liberty.
