Today is the Epiphany of the Lord. Many s ll call it “li le Christmas” as we tell the story at Mass of the coming of the magi bearing gi s. I remember my mom telling my brothers and me that Epiphany is when her family would open gi s when she was a child. I rather like that tradi on because I think it can help keep Christmas Day a bit more “pure” in celebra ng God becoming flesh in Jesus rather than the preoccupa on of gi -giving. Be that as it may, we have kept the focus of Epiphany on Jesus and, in par cular, that he is revealed as messiah for all peoples and all na ons, not only for the chosen people of Israel. The magi came from distant lands, guided by a star, a light that shines around the globe. This is the “epiphany” of the Lord, that he comes for all.
The Diocesan Conference, once again, was a posi ve experience for all who a end-ed. I’m proud to say that the Cathedral had its largest representa on yet. One of the workshops of par cular importance was the presenta on by Dr. Mark Fischer, a profes-sor at Saint John Seminary in Camarillo, California, who talked about re-vitalizing our parish Pastoral Councils. Many of our council members were present, as were those of quite a few of our parishes. It is very helpful, from me to me, to consider how coun-cils are working in our parish and how the priests interact with those councils. Many of those on our Pastoral Council have served for many, many years. While I added a cou-ple of people last year, we will be taking a look at our structure and bring some new people to the council later in the year. I also was able to a end a couple workshops on Sacred Scripture which were quite good. The Diocesan Conference is always a good re-fresher of mind and spirit. I hope you were able to take advantage of the opportunity. If not, do keep it in mind for next year.
As we come to the final week of the Christmas Season, I want to thank all of you who sent or delivered cards, food, drink, delicious goodies and other gi s to your priests and staff. I’m always overwhelmed at your generosity and though ulness. It can be such a hec c me of year that I am lucky if I get any Christmas gree ngs out even to my own family before Easter(!), yet you seem to find the me to remember us. We are most grateful – and fa er – for all your many kindnesses!
Remember the blood drive is next week. If you are physically able to give, it is truly a gi of life. Sign up this weekend.

Hoy es la Epifanía del Señor. Muchos todavía la llaman "Pequeña Navidad" mien-tras contamos la historia en Misa de la venida de los reyes magos que llevan regalos. Recuerdo que mi mamá nos conté a mis hermanos y a mí que cuando ella era niña, su familia abría los regalos el día de la Epifanía. Me gusta más esa tradición porque creo que puede ayudar a mantener la celebración de la Navidad un poco más "pura" y así enfocarnos en celebrar que Dios se hizo carne en Jesús, en lugar de la preocupación de dar regalos. Sea como sea, hemos mantenido el enfoque de la Epifanía en Jesús y, en par cular, que se revela como mesías para todos los pueblos y todas las naciones, no sólo para el pueblo elegido de Israel. Los reyes magos provenían de erras lejanas, guiados por una estrella, una luz que brilla por todo el mundo. Esta es la "epifanía" del Señor, que viene para todos. La Conferencia Diocesana, una vez más, fue una experiencia posi va para todos los que asis eron. Me enorgullece decir que la Catedral tuvo su mayor representación hasta la fecha. Uno de los talleres de par cular importancia fue la presentación del Dr. Mark Fischer, profesor del Seminario San Juan en Camarillo, California, quien habló so-bre la revitalización de nuestros Consejos Pastorales Parroquiales. Muchos de los miembros de nuestro consejo estuvieron presentes, al igual que los de unas pocas de nuestras parroquias. Es muy ú l, de vez en cuando, considerar cómo los consejos están trabajando en nuestra parroquia y cómo los sacerdotes interactúan con esos consejos. Muchos de los que están en nuestro Consejo Pastoral han servido durante muchos, muchos años. Mientras añadí un par de personas el año pasado, echaremos un vistazo a nuestra estructura y traeremos a algunas personas nuevas al consejo más adelante en el año. También pude asis r a un par de talleres sobre la Sagrada Escritura que estuvie-ron bastante buenos. La Conferencia Diocesana es siempre un buen repaso de mente y espíritu. Espero que haya podido aprovechar la oportunidad. Si no, téngalo en cuenta para el próximo año. Al llegar a la úl ma semana de la temporada navideña, quiero dar las gracias a todos los que enviaron o entregaron tarjetas, comida, bebidas, golosinas y otros regalos a sus sacerdotes y personal. Siempre me alegra su generosidad y consideración. Puede ser una época del año muy agitada, que tengo suerte si mando saludos navideños, incluso a mi propia familia, antes de la Pascua, sin embargo, ustedes encuentran el empo para recordarnos. ¡Estamos muy agradecidos–y un poquito más gordos–por su bondad! Recuerde que el próximo Domingo tendremos una campaña para que pueda donar sangre en el estacionamiento. Si su salud le permite donar, hágalo, es realmente un don de vida. Recently a member of the Serra Club of Reno expressed the desire to establish a chal-lenge match up to $75,000 for the benefit of seminarian educa on. This anonymous donor offered to match dona ons made by January 31, 2020, up to a total of $75,000. All funds will be held in the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians, which is restricted in use for the educa onal needs of the Diocese of Reno Seminarians.
I’m gra fied to witness the men and women of the SERRA Club of Reno suppor ng the religious of our diocese through prayer, community gatherings and financial contribu ons. I am especially grateful for this matching gi that enables us to raise funds for seminarian educa on and to con nue to grow the Thomas S. Dolan Endowment for Seminarians.
Educa ng one seminarian takes six to eight years and costs approximately $50,000 per seminarian each year. In the past three years, we have ordained five men as priests for this diocese, and they are now working alongside their brother priests ministering to Catholics throughout northern Nevada. Currently, 3 young men are studying to become priests for the diocese.
I invite you to consider prayerfully whether you might be able to help us maximize this challenge by making a dona on toward the match by January 31, 2020.
