The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, which posted a $5.5 million deficit in its first 18 months, will needbetween $2 and $3 million a year in public funding to continue operating, CEO John Pepper said today.
The center will not seek a specific levy, like the one that supports Cincinnati Museum Center, he said, but will ask city,state and federal governments to provide the funding out of existing budgets.
We need to show that what we have to offer is vital to this community, he said, citing for example school curriculum now
offered to teachers, and the centers potential as a place to solve racial conflicts and attack the problem of youth violence.
In addition, Pepper is leading a drive to raise $10 million in donations to offset the existing deficit and to keep the museumfrom falling deeper in the hole; $4 million has already been pledged to that effort, he said.
Pepper said expanded programming and more community events will also help keep the museum relevant, as well assolvent.
Costs outstripped income because paid admissions dropped after the Center opened to national fanfare in August 2004.Some 355,000 visitors have been to the Center since it opened.
Museum director Spencer Crew said in 2004 he hoped the center would draw 260,000 visitors and raise $5 million to $7million in individual and corporate donations each year.
Now, Crew said, he expects 175,000 to 200,000 visitors. Neither he nor Pepper specified a target annual amount theyplan to raise from private donors.
