STUDY VISIT 1: KNOSSOS PALACE (included in the programme of the training)
Restorated part of the palace at Knosos © Ministry of Culture and Sports © 23rd Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities
Knossos (5.5 km from the venue of the summer course, 15 minutes by bus) is the site of the most
important and better known palace of Minoan civilization. According to tradition, it was the seat of
the legendary king Minos. The Palace is also connected with thrilling legends, such as the myth of
the Labyrinth with the Minotaur, and the story of Daidalos and Icaros. The site was continuously
inhabited from the Neolithic period (7000-3000 B.C.) until Roman times. The Linear B tablets
(Mycenaean script) of the 14th century B.C. mention the city as ko-no-so.
Intensive habitation occured mostly in the Minoan period, when the so-called first (19th-17th
centuries B.C.) and second palaces (16th-14th centuries B.C.) were built along with luxurious
houses, a hospice and various other structures. After its partial destruction in 1450 B.C., Knossos
was settled by Mycenaeans from the Greek Mainland.
The city flourished again during the Hellenistic period (sanctuaries of Glaukos, Demeter, other
sanctuaries, chamber tombs, north cemetery, defensive towers) and in 67 B.C. it was captured by
the Roman Quintus Caecilius Metelus Creticus. The "Villa of Dionysos", a private house with
splendid mosaics was built in the same period.
Knossos was discovered in 1878 by Minos Kalokairinos. Arthur Evans conducted systematic
excavations at the site between 1900 and 1931, bringing to light the palace, a large section of the
Minoan city, and the cemeteries. Since then, the site and the surrounding area have been
excavated by the British School of Archaeology at Athens and the 23rd E.P.C.A.
STUDY VISIT 2: ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM (included in the programme of the training) The Heraklion Archaeological Museum (80 metres from the venue of the summer course, 2 minutes
walking) is one of the oldest and most important museums in Greece, and among the most famous
museums in Europe. It houses representative artifacts from all periods of Cretan prehistory and
history, covering a chronological span of over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman
times. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum prides itself for its unique Minoan collection, which
includes the masterpieces of Minoan art. It is rightly considered as the Museum of Minoan Culture
par excellence (for further details please see here
http://heraklionmuseum.gr/?page_id=1406&lang=en).
SELECTED EXHIBITS
THE “PRINCE OF THE LILIES”
The “Prince of the Lilies”, an emblematic image of Minoan Crete, was
part of a large mural composition in high relief. The figure, composed
of three non-joining parts, is portrayed life-size, wearing a richly
colored kilt with a codpiece and belt and a majestic crown on his head
with papyrus-lilies and peacock feathers. According to the excavator of
Knossos, Arthur Evans, he was the “Ruler of Knossos” the “Priest-
King”, a personification of religious and secular authority. However,
other scholars suggest different reconstructions and interpretations,
according to which the “Prince” may be an athlete, a boxer, or a
commanding ruler, while the crown is attributed to a priestess or a
sphinx.
Knossos, Palace, Neopalatial period (1600-1450 BC).
THE “LADIES IN BLUE” FRESCO
Part of a composition of richly dressed and lavishly
bejeweled female figures depicted against a blue
ground. Despite its fragmentary condition, the wall
painting transmits the sense of opulence and prosperity
of the royal court while reflecting the coquetry of the
ladies, who gesture displaying the richness of their
jewelry. Knossos, Palace, 1600-1450 BC
MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
The Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) (1.5 km from the venue of the summer course, 13
minutes walking) demonstrates with an impressive manner the natural environment of eastern
Mediterranean area with special emphasis on Greece and Crete. The exhibition is located at Sofokli
Venizelou Avenue in Heraklion (for further details please see here

KARTEROS-AMNISSOS BEACH
The Bay of Karteros (8 km from the venue of the summer
course, 20 minutes by bus) is located at the exit of the
homonym Gorge Karteros, 7km east of Heraklion and
extends to the east for 3.5km. It is named after the
Byzantine General, Karteros, who in 824AC landed on the
beach with his ships in order to liberate Crete from the
Saracens, but was defeated. On the long bay, there are two
settlements, Karteros and Amnissos. The area has
developed so much that the two villages are now merged.
The main reason for the rapid development of the area is the small distance from Heraklion and the
beautiful beachfront with the fine golden sand. For further details please see here http://www.crete-
beaches.com/karteros-beach/.

complex for marine research, technology and entertainment in the
Mediterranean area, that has established its function and its
development of scientific knowledge and discoveries in Marine
Science (for further details please see here

CAVE OF ZEUS
The Dikteon Cave (or Dikteon Andron or Dictaean Cave) (61 km from the
venue of the summer course, 1.5 hours by bus, the hotel could organize this
trip for 45 euros) is one of the most important and famous of the 3,000 caves
in Crete and the 8,500 in Greece. It is in the impressive Dikteon Cave, rich in
stalagmites and stalactites, that Zeus was born according to legend. This is
why the Dikteon Cave was already famous in antiquity, dedicated to the
worship of the greatest of the gods, as the many offerings found there
indicate. In our days the Dikteon Cave continues to receive many visitors, no
longer worshippers, of course, but travellers from all over the world (for further details please see
here http://www.explorecrete.com/archaeology/dikteon-andron-cave.html).
