The “Scores on the Doors” scheme hasproved extremely popular across Kirkleesand is a great way for prospective custom-ers to see how hygienic their localtakeaway, restaurant, service provider orother food outlet is.

The ratings grade food establishmentsfrom five stars down to zero.

Food safety officers from KirkleesCouncil have inspected what goes on

behind the scenes in the kitchens of over1,000 Huddersfield food establishments.

The Examiner recently published ahandy directory of results for its readers –with a list of scores from cafes, restaur-ants and pubs to nursing homes andschool kitchens.

All scores were taken from the officialKirklees Council Scores on the Doorswebsite and are the results of the latestinspections for each of the outlets.

Outlets given five stars are rated ‘excel-

lent’, four stars ‘very good’, three stars‘good’, two stars ‘fair’, one star ‘poor’and zero stars ‘very poor’.

Twenty food establishments in Hud-dersfield are rated zero – falling wellbelow the expected hygiene standards.

Food safety officers regard any estab-lishment falling below a two star rating asfailing to comply with the authority’sminimum hygiene standards.

She said: “Food businesses are awarded acertificate to display once they have received theirstar rating.

“Displaying this certificate is optional andmany of the lower-rated businesses fail to displaythis for obvious reasons.”

Clr Harkin advised diners to check out hygieneratings before choosing a restaurant, adding:“Remember – Before you fork out, check itout.”

Kirklees Council say that each year there aresome 600 cases of food-related illnesses reportedlocally.

They can all be caused by not following simplefood safety practices like hand-washing, de-frost-

ing, cooking and re-heating and following fooduse-by dates.

The results can be salmonella, listeriosis andE-coli. Symptoms range from being flu-like tovomiting and fever and can put the elderly andvery young at risk. There are rare occasions whenconditions are so poor that an establishment hasto be closed to protect public safety.

Enforcement action is taken if necessary andthis can range from an informal written warning,or serving a legal notice, to prohibiting theproprietor from trading until the risk is removed,or even prosecution. Successful prosecutions canlead to hefty fines, permanent closure of busi-nesses and a ban on proprietors operating foodbusinesses in future years.

The star rating reflects the level of cleanliness,good food safety practice and management and ithelps potential customers make an informedchoice.

Those rated five stars are excellent and thosewith no stars indicate a very poor compliancewith food hygiene.

Scores on the Doors is a national scheme usedby 124 local authorities in England, Wales andNorthern Ireland including all local authoritiesin West and South Yorkshire.

Each year there are over 600 cases offood-related illnesses reported locally and manymore cases go unreported.

They can all be caused by not following simplefood safety practices around hand-washing,de-frosting, cooking and re-heating and follow-ing food use-by dates for example.

More than 1100 food premises have now beenawarded a rating of four or five stars locally. Just32 have received a zero-star rating and a further183 received one star.

In particular, many take-away premises are

showing an improvement in food safety practicein order to improve their star rating and attractmore custom as a result.

Mr Yousaf, proprietor of Posh Nosh, QueenStreet South, Huddersfield is one of the firsttakeaways to receive a five star rating.

Mr Yousaf has said “I would like to thank theCouncil’s Food Safety team for the time andeffort they have given to our business. We arecommitted to complying with food hygiene lawsand are proud to say that with support from theCouncil, we have achieved the highest ratingpossible due to our high standards.”

Trinitees take-away, on Manchester Road,Thornton Lodge, Huddersfield was inspected onFebruary 22 and was also awarded five stars.

The cleanliness and standard of facilities in thepremises were excellent and the EnvironmentalHealth Officer was very impressed by the foodsafety management system in operation.
