These 220 words are called the Dolch Sight Words. Because these words are used to hold thoughts together, these words must be recognized at a glance before a child can read with confidence. However, learning Dolch sight words in isolation is not as effective as learning them in context. Reading phrases allows children to learn how to train their eyes to take in more than one word at a time. To make the game 5 in a Row: Dolch Phrases, you will need: 1. Game board 2. Laminate board or slip into a plastic sheet protector for durability and longevity 3. Dice (one per game board) 4. Colored pieces to mark spaces (two different colors-one for each player per game board) 5. Two players per game board How to play: 1. To decide who will go first, have each player roll the die. The player with the higher number rolls first. 2. Player 1 rolls the die. 3. That player will then read a word with the same number as the die. 4. If the word is read correctly, player 1 will place one colored piece on the word. 5. Player 2 will then take a turn. 6. If the child can not read the word, they let their partner roll. It’s like losing a turn. 7. The winner is the one to have 5 in a row either vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. 8. To reinforce phrase vocabulary, have partners play to see who wins the best of three. Alicia Lochridge @ firstgradefactory.blogspot.com
