not .500 or better you’re in trouble,” Whitmore said.

“We still have an opportunity to be .500 or better.

“All up you need 11 or 12 wins, 12 wins to be guaranteed (a finals spot) so we’ve still got a bit of work to do.”

Whitmore said it had been a disappointing start to the season with his side struggling to play consistent basketball.

Impressive wins over Norwood and West Adelaide have been offset by a shock loss to previously winless Eastern Mavericks.

“It’s about the group understanding the level of effort and level of intensity that is required each week,” Whitmore said.

“Our bigs have struggled, struggled to bring the level of effort and intensity, and we’ve

WOODVILLE coach Scott Whitmore has put the heat

on his side’s bigs to be more aggressive ahead of a season-defining clash with Sturt at St Clair.

The Warriors sit eighth with just two wins from the opening six rounds after suffering an upset defeat to Eastern Mavericks a fortnight ago.

Whitmore said his bigs needed to stand up against the Sabres.

“We’ve worked on their positioning and ability to demand the ball and get upset when they don’t get it,” he said.

“They’ve been a little bit passive.”

Whitmore said the season was fast slipping away if his side did not pull its finger out.

“At the halfway mark if you’re

relied too much on Darren Ng.

“When our bigs are on, when our bigs are aggressive and competitive, we do well.”

Whitmore was forced to shuffle his line-up ahead of round one after import Jason Luhnow broke his foot during the preseason.

Whitmore said Luhnow is probably another week away from making his season debut.

Whitmore said Eastern played a great game in round six but his side headed to the Hills “cocky”.

“We didn’t bring the right mental effort,” he said.

“We probably went up there thinking we were going to be 3-3.”

PANTHERS VROCKETS

SOUTH Adelaide and North Adelaide enter their clash at Marion Stadium going in opposite directions.

The Panthers have not tasted victory since round one while the Rockets have won five on the trot since a season-opening loss to Woodville.

Those streaks would look set to continue.

South is rebuilding and giving opportunity to younger players while North is eyeing off its first women’s title since 2004.

The Rockets have far too

many weapons for the Panthers.

Tayla Corrigan (13.3 points per game), Opal Mader (13.1), Jo Hill (12.8) and Norrisha Victrum (12.3) are all enjoying fantastic starts to the season.

Hill is also averaging 7.6 boards each game.

South on the other hand have looked at Teonna Campbell to spur them on.

The Panthers must improve their league-worst shooting.

South Adelaide Panthers v North Adelaide Rockets

Marion • Saturday, May 20, 2017Tip-off • Women: 6.30pm, Men: 8:15pm

MEN’S PREVIEWSOUTH ADELAIDE will unveil

new import Jarmal Reid against high-flying North Adelaide.

Reid – a 201cm forward – will make his debut for the Panthers after arriving in SA during last weekend’s league-wide break for the SA Junior Championships.

South will be hoping the 23 year old, who played 118 games in four years with the Oregon State Beavers, can help them get back on the winners list.

The Panthers dropped out of the top five after losing to

West Adelaide last outing and have dropped their past three games.

North sits third despite only having one loss in six games.

The Rockets ended Forestville’s unbeaten start to the season last round.

Alex Starling (35 points and nine rebounds) and Aric Miller (30 points) were standouts.

The teams split two tight contests last season with the visitors winning both times.

TIGERS VEAGLES

THE Southern Tigers can extend their winning streak to six matches when they host Forestville.

The Tigers have surged to the top of the standings with five-straight victories since losing to Sturt in round one.

In the past two rounds they have prevailed in close encounters.

Southern edged Norwood by two points on the road last outing after downing West Adelaide by one a week earlier.

Another close tussle could be on the cards.

The Eagles sit mid-table with a 3-3 record following a seven-point loss to second-ranked North Adelaide.

The Eagles have beaten the teams below them and lost to the ones above in a trend coach Monica Bello will be hoping ends soon.

They have been close in their losses, including a seven-point defeat to North last round.

Olivia Thompson has been a standout, averaging 19.6 points per game.

Southern Tigers v Forestville Eagles

Morphett Vale • Saturday, May 20, 2017Tip-off • Women: 6.30pm, Men: 8:15pm

MEN’S PREVIEWFORESTVILLE will get another

chance to prove itself on the Premier League’s big stage.

The Eagles will travel to Morphett Vale to face Southern Tigers in a second-straight top-of-the-table clash.

Forestville fell by five points to North Adelaide in their one against two clash a fortnight ago and will be keen to atone for that defeat.

The Eagles threatened to steal victory late despite trailing by as much as 17 points.

Majok Deng scored 27 points and gathered 14 rebounds

while Jake Rios (24 points) and Antonio Garrett (18 points and 11 boards) were also busy.

Southern recorded an impressive road win over Norwood last start and will be boosted by the club debut of Decorey Jones.

The former Eastern Mavericks’ import makes the Tigers look even more fearsome, with Anthony Drmic and Michael Nwelue dominant so far this season.

BEARCATS VLIONS

WEST Adelaide secured a vital victory against South Adelaide last start and will look to close in on the top five against Central Districts at Port Adelaide.

The Bearcats thumped South Adelaide by 33 points, after the Panthers made a fast start, to improve their record to 2-4.

West sits a win and percentage behind fifth-placed Forestville entering its clash with the Lions.

With the Eagles facing a tough trip for play first-placed Southern Tigers the Bearcats could draw level on three wins.

West’s win over South followed a one-point loss to the Tigers.

Ashlea Vordermaier (17.3 points per game), Ieva Nagy (16) and Sky Langenbrinck (14.3) have been leading from the front for the Bearcats.

Centrals are still on the hunt for their first win of 2017.

The Lions look to be improving each week and testing their opponents for longer periods of time.

West Adelaide Bearcats v Central Districts Lions

Port Adelaide • Saturday, May 20, 2017Tip-off • Women: 6.30pm, Men: 8:15pm

MEN’S PREVIEWWEST Adelaide can

consolidate its spot in the top five with a big win over Central Districts at home.

The Bearcats climbed into the five after overcoming South Adelaide in round six, squaring their win-loss ledger at 3-3.

Dee Oldham continued his impressive run with 26 points and 14 rebounds as West shot at 50 per cent from the field.

The Bearcats have shown positive signs but been plagued by inconsistency.

They have yet to string together consecutive wins

in 2017 but can change that against Centrals.

With Forestville and North Adelaide to follow it looms as a must-win clash.

Meanwhile, the Lions matched Sturt for a half a fortnight ago but could not go the full journey.

A second win of the season does not seem far away for the improving Centrals unit.

Dave Humphries scored 19 points in his season debut.

WARRIORS VSABRES

TWO sides sitting in the bottom half of the ladder square off in a huge clash at St Clair.

Woodville, 2-4, and Sturt, 3-3, have both had patchy seasons so far and will be looking for a win to keep pressure on the top five.

The Warriors showed plenty of character and pushed Eastern Mavericks last round while the Sabres powered past hapless Central Districts.

Jennifer Monroe produced on of the better rebounding games you will ever see, collecting 24 boards including

11 at the offensive end of the court.

Monroe also scored 17 points while Ashley Claussen added 18 and Katherine Perkas 11.

It was only in the last quarter Eastern pulled away.

Another performance like that would give Woodville a huge chance against Sturt.

The Sabres sit sixth following their win over the Lions.

Sarah Elsworthy (12.8 points per game) will be a key.

Woodville Warriors v Sturt Sabres

St. Clair • Saturday, May 20, 2017Tip-off • Women: 6.30pm, Men: 8:15pm

MEN’S PREVIEWWOODVILLE returns home to

face Sturt in need of a win.

The Warriors became the first team to fall to Eastern Mavericks this season when they lost by three points before last weekend’s league-wide break.

Woodville led by seven points at the final break before being overpowered.

The Warriors were left to rue poor shooting, making just 32 per cent of their shots.

Darren Ng was a standout performer, piling on 35 points along with nine rebounds

and four assists in an AllStar Photos Players of the Week worthy effort.

Sturt took care of business against Central Districts and in the process strung together consecutive victories for the first time in 2017.

The Sabres were pushed for a half before putting the foot down to outscore the hosts 41-29 in the second half.

Jacob Rigoni led the way with 20 points and seven boards.

NORWOOD gets another crack at a possible major round opponent when it faces Eastern Mavericks at home.

The Flames fell just shy of ladder-leading Southern Tigers last game and sit fourth with a 4-2 record.

The Mavericks are a spot above them with five wins and just one defeat.

Norwood traded blows all night with Southern a fortnight ago before dropping the contest by two points.

Jess Good continued her impressive 2017 campaign,

netting 15 points and gathering 10 boards.

Chelsea Brook led the way with a team-high 16 points and Shannon McKay added 14 for the Flames.

Eastern shook off a stubborn Woodville at home on the strength of a 27-14 final term.

The Mavericks will be looking to prove a point on the road after a poor display against North Adelaide last time it left the Adelaide Hills.

ARC Campbelltown • Saturday, May 20, 2017Tip-off • Women: 6.30pm, Men: 8:15pm

MEN’S PREVIEWNORWOOD will look to

bounce back from its narrow loss to Southern Tigers against an Eastern Mavericks side on a high after recording their first win.

Despite falling short there was plenty to like about the Flames’ seven-point loss to Southern.

New import Kellen Smith produced a stunning debut, dropping 23 points and recording four rebounds and eight assists.

Jerrell Sanders continued his fine form with 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Daniel

Webber and Matthew Lycett also scored in doube figures.

Norwood should prevail at home in the encounter but only have to look back at the last round to see the threat Eastern presents.

The Mavericks stunned Woodville to earn their first win of 2017.

Dylan Shorne topscored with 21 points and picked up eight boards.

Lachlan Barker scored 17.

six boards and five assists) and Jennifer Monroe (17 points and 24 rebounds) helped Woodville hang around for as long as possible.

The Warriors built their biggest lead – five points – early in the first term before a tense battle broke out.

From early in the first until late in the fourth the lead sat at single digits as the advantage traded hands several times.

Woodville was hungry – as it chased a third win of 2017 –

and outrebounded the hosts 62-39.

But Eastern was a touch cleaner and classier.

The Mavericks scored 27 points from turnovers (compared to the Warriors’ 11) and shot at 47 per cent (against 33 per cent) from the field.

Eastern also came up with a number of big defensive plays.

THE Eastern Mavericks improved to 5-1 on Saturday night but it was not without a scare against a dogged Woodville Warriors.

Eastern needed a 27-14 final period to pull off a 10-point win at Adelaide Hills after the Warriors showed plenty of character chasing a much-needed win.

Alex Wilson led the Mavericks’ charge with 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

STURT has evened out its record at 3-3, pushing past a gritty Central Districts 82-54 with a strong team-effort in an often scrappy affair.

Kate Gladstone got the Sabres off to a flyer, knocking down two big threes as the Sabres quickly took an 11-2 lead.

The Lions did claw their way back into the quarter, with Hannah Hank providing back-to-back baskets and Jessica Puvogel with tenacious driving into the key.

Caroline Burgess hit a nice jumper in response, ensuring that the Sabres would go in

with the momentum and a five-point edge at the first change.

The Sabres broke away from Centrals in the third, particularly on the back of well-rounded team effort.

By the end of the night, five players were in double-digit point tallies.

Gladstone and Tamara Brine were best for Sturt.

Gladstone scored a game-high 19 points, while Brine had 14 points and six rebounds.

SECOND-placed North Adelaide has held off Forestville in a close and physical clash at Hillcrest.

The opening minutes of the contest saw both clubs’ finding their feet in the fixture.

The Eagles began to take the game to their hosts and built a mid-quarter lead of nine points.

Jo Hill was fantastic off the bench (18-points and 10 rebounds) and cut the margin down to three points with a steal and finish and later a silky spin move.

North Adelaide led by seven at half-time and built on the

margin with a strong start to the third.

The Rockets made the lead a game-high 15 points.

Forestville were down but not out at this point as Olivia Thompson (15 points) pushed hard to spur a comeback.
