I hereby warmly invite you to participate in the „HfM Saar Summer School 2016“, which will be held for the first time from 5 to 17 September 2016.
In future, in addition to our „Junge Akademie Saar“ term-time teaching, we will also promote up-and-coming musicians with our „HfM Saar Summer School“.
Over the course of a week, participants will, under professional conditions, work in an ensemble and during individual lessons on complex compositions, which will be performed together at the end of each week. The focus of all three academies will be on intensive, practical cooperation with experienced professionals.
Thanks to the generous support of The Peter and Luise Hager Foundation and the ME Saar Foundation, participants can with a scholarship attend free of charge. Applicants who do not receive scholarships are also welcome to take part in the HfM Saar Summer School as passive participants subject to payment of a low fee.

The Strings Academy combines in a simultaneously demanding and participative concept individual playing and collective practice in a novel way.
Participants and teachers together form a string orchestra (8, 7, 6, 5, 3) that intentionally has no conductor. Besides daily chamber- orchestra rehearsals supplemented with rehearsals in smaller chamber-music ensembles, participants are taught individually by the professors.

Strings Academy
Prof. David Grimal (violin)David Grimal works as a soloist with, among others, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the National Orchestra of Russia, the
Orchestre National de Lyon, the New Japan Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Opéra de Lyon, the Orchestra of the Mozarteum of Salzburg, the Symphony Orchestra of Jerusalem and the Sinfonia Varsovia. In 2004 he founded the conductor-less artists‘ collective „Les Dissonances“. David Grimal has been professor of violin at the HfM University of Music Saar since 2009.
Prof. Hans-Peter Hofmann (violin)Hans-Peter Hofmann has been concertmaster of the Bavarian Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bavarian Chamber Orchestra and the
Berlin Chamber Orchestra. Since 2006, he has acted as a concertmaster, chamber musician and soloist for „Les Dissonances“. Since 2007, he has conducted the European Union Chamber Orchestra. In October 2010, Hans-Peter Hofmann was appointed professor at the HfM University of Music Saar.
Prof. Jone Kaliunaite (viola)Jone Kaliunaite was the principal violist at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. As a soloist she has worked with, among others, the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, the
Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the Philhar-monie Südwestfalen. As a sought-after chamber musician she has performed with Maxim Vengerov, Gustav Rivinius, Eduard Brunner, and Thomas Duis to name just a few. In 2005, Jone Kaliunaite was appointed professor of viola at the HfM University of Music Saar.
Prof. Xavier Phillips (cello)
The close collaboration with Mstislav Rostropovich has strongly influenced Xavier Phillips‘ artistic work. He has given concerts with the
Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmo-nique de Radio France, the Berlin Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Filarmonica della Scala. Chamber music plays a key role in Xavier Phillips‘ work.
Prof. Wolfgang Harrer (Kontrabass)
Wolfgang Harrer was section leader in the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna and a solo bassist in the Vienna Kam-meroper. He is a guest-player
in the orchestras of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic as well as in the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. As a sought-after chamber musician he has given concerts with the Melos Quartet, Klangforum, Ensemble „die reihe“, „Ensemble des 20. Jahrhunderts“, Ensemble „Kontrapunkte“ and the Alt-Wiener Octet. Since 1996 he has been professor of double bass at the HfM University of Music Saar.

The Choral Academy is aimed primarily at singers aged between 16 and 26 years who:
• wish to experience choral work on a high level that exceeds that required by amateur choirs and which approaches the semi-professional level
• are interested in enrolling for a university degree in singing
• who hope to gain new impetus from completing professional choral work at the HfM University of Music Saar

Development and performance of complex choral music under professional conditions in an academy choir together with professional singers from radio choirs or the professional choral scene in every vocal group. The latter will coach the scholarship holders during the entire duration of the Choral Academy, providing targeted vocal training that is entirely tailored to the individual needs and requirements of professional vocal ensemble work and its literature.

Conductors‘ Academy – general information:
• two hours a day of conducting lessons by Prof. Georg Grün (only with active participation)
• one hour a day of active work with the Academy Choir, shared between the four active conducting scholarship holders (only with active participation)

The Conductors‘ Academy focuses primarily on questions of interpretation, choral sound, intonation and the realisation thereof when conducting and rehearsing in a professional context. Particular attention is paid to baton- conducting and the individual „conductoral language“ of the participants through individual conducting lessons with Prof. Grün, passive participation in the choral rehearsals and own conducting of the academy choir, the rehearsals of which are video-recorded and subsequently evaluated as part of the preparation of the candidate choral works for rehearsal and conducting.

Conductors‘ Academy
Georg Grün ranks among the most sought-after choral conductors and choral sound specialists in the world. In 1990, he founded the KammerChor Saarbrücken and remains its artistic director today. With the ensemble he has won major international and national choir competitions, has performed at many renowned music festivals and has regularly produced CDs for Carus- Verlag and Rondeau. Between 2000 and 2012 Georg Grün was professor of choral conducting at the Mu-sikhochschule Mannheim, with whose newly-formed Chamber Choir he also won numerous international prizes. In 2012, Georg Grün was appointed professor at the HfM University of Music Saar, and in 2013 took
on the role of conductor of the Ev. Chorgemeinschaft an der Saar. Georg Grün travels extensively both in Germany and abroad as a guest conductor, adjudicator and teacher of international master classes in choral conducting. Since 2010, he has been a mentor of the Conductors‘ Forum of the German Music Council and since 2015, chairman of the jury at the renowned International Chamber Choir Competition Markt- oberdorf. In 2016 concerts, adjudicator work, master classes and guest conducting engagements will take him, among other places, to Italy, France, Ireland, Spain and Poland.

Registration:
All participants, whether active or passive, must complete the application form at: www.hfm.saarland.de
Enrolment is binding after payment of the fee of 100 euros. After active participation the registration fee will be refunded.
Participation costs:
The course fee of 600 euros is financed for the selected active participants through a grant from the Peter and Luise Hager Founda-tion and the ME Saar Foundation.
The costs for accommodation and meals are not included in the participation fee. We are happy to help you find suitable accommodation.
Selection of active participants
• Strings Academy
The artistic directors will select from among the candidates seven first violins, six second violins, five violas, four cellos and two double basses. Passive participation in the Strings Academy is also possible.
• Choral Academy
The artistic director will select from among the candidates six active participants per vocal group. Passive participation in the Choral Academy is also possible.
• Conductors‘ Academy
The artistic director will select from among the applicants up to eight candidates. At the start of the Conductors‘ Academy, up to four active participants will be chosen following a preliminary conducting session. The remaining candidates may participate as passive participants in the Conductors‘ Academy
