Review the Severe Weather and Emergency Conditions website. [hr.duke.edu/policies/expectations/severe-weather] Discuss this policy with your supervisor and ask about your job category (essential, reserve, or delayed) and work expectations in the event of severe weather or other emergency conditions.

Bookmark the Duke Today website on your ‘favorites’ list. [today.duke.edu]

Give your work contact information to your family (copy the back of this sheet), and give your family contact information to your department.

Within 14 Days of Your Hire Date (School of Medicine requirement only)

In accordance with the School of Medicine Influenza Vaccination Policy, all School of Medicine employees are required to be vaccinated or approved for a medical or religious exemption within 14 calendar days of their start day. This requirement is a condition of employment.

Within 30 Days of Your Hire Date

Review your Health, Dental, Vision, and other benefits options and make your final selections no later than 30 days from your official start date. For most benefits, enroll online. [hr.duke.edu/benefits] For voluntary disability insurance, enroll using the form in your benefits booklet.

Review the other benefits provided to you – retirement plans, wellness programs, merchant discounts, educational benefits, etc.

Learn about your job, performance expectations, compliance and training requirements, and your department’s role and mission.

Complete the mandatory training assigned to you in Duke’s LMS [work.duke.edu/irj/portal] and at the Occupational & Environmental Safety Office web site. [safety.duke.edu]

Have a “check in” meeting with your supervisor about your job performance.

Within 90 Days of Your Hire Date

Your orientation and evaluation period begins on your hire date and lasts through your first 90 calendar days. This period is a time for frequent communication between you and your supervisor to discuss performance expectations and determine if the job is the right one for you. You will also be accruing time-off (vacation/sick leave, Paid Time Off), which can be used after successfully completing this 90-day period.
