Mission Statement We, the faith community of St. Colette, in proclaiming the truth of the Gospel are committed to follow Jesus Christ by being ”the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world”. By our Baptism we are called to serve people of all cul-tures, migrants, and those who have no voice of their own; our born and unborn children; victims of violence, and the impoverished. Empowered by the Holy Spirit and nurtured by the Eucharist, we are led to promote human dignity and justice for all people. We believe that this is the way the Lord is calling us to be a sign of His kingdom in this time and place.

A WORD FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR NAME CALLING

We all do it. We start out very young and grow up with what becomes a habit that insidiously robs us of an awareness of the damage we are doing to ourselves and others. Damage? What damage, you say. This is just some whining about “political correctness”, and has-n’t our president put an end to that? Damage, yes! Moral damage, certainly! Per-sonal and social damage as well are consequences of name calling. Let me clarify exactly what I mean by name calling. All the usual racial and ethnic slurs or “nick names” as well as any reference that demeans “others”, or worse yet, demonizes them. So, what is the damage. Name calling is a way of making “others” in our own mind lesser in their humanity or personhood, or robbing them of their God given human dignity. In other words, name calling falsely allows us to assume some kind of superiority over “others” and can give us an ex-cuse for all kinds of bad behavior against “others” ranging from simple insults, to denial of their civil and human rights to outright injustice and oppres-sion. Think, if you will of what happened to our Jewish brothers and sisters in Hitler’s Germany, or our own historical issue of slavery. Think seriously of the words we use to de-scribe “others”, those different from us ethnically, socially, religiously, racially, culturally, or by gen-der identification or physical or mental condition. Really at the heart of it all is that we see those different from ourselves, not as different expressions of God’s gift of human life, but as “other” than our-selves. The true reality is that there is no “other” because we all share the same source of life, God. Since we all, every human being of whatever color, ethnicity, race, gender, or life situation, are part of the “all”, are created in the image and likeness of God, we owe each other the recognition of our com-mon human, God given, dignity as children of God. The next time you are tempted to use a “nick name” or other reference to someone else or some other group, ask yourself, “What am I saying about myself?” What am I saying about my relationship with God? Why do I need to demean another human being?

Fr. Brian Simpson Administrator of St. Colette Parish

Update/Report on Eagle Parish Deck Project

After a few delays due to a redesign, the permit application process and a few unexpected situations, we were able to start the re-building of the Parish deck adjacent to the Parish House. We started the build in July and will go on through the end of August. A current picture is attached and we invite you to view the deck behind the east section fence of the Parish House. Thank you for all the support thus far in prayer and in kind. We will be adding the decking floor and railing in the next few weekends. Thank you for those who have donated to the project. We are still looking and wel-coming anyone who would like to donate and con-tribute to help in funding the project. If you would like to support – you can send a check to the Parish with a note – Eagle Deck Project or go to the GOFUNDME site - https://www.gofundme.com/JeremyStColetteParish. Thank you and God bless!

GOOD STUFF TO SHARE....... ABOUT OUR SISTER PARISH

ST. BASIL-VISITATION DID YOU KNOW that last Sunday was St. Co-lette's first Summer Give Away and we served the needs of our parish families and our sister parish, St. Basil Visita-tion? Barbara Collins, of St. Basil-Visitation, who has served for decades through the Chapter of St. Vincent De-Paul Society, came to St. Colette's with three of her sons and loaded up the U-Haul truck with close to 25 boxes filled with food, baby products, family-sized toiletry products, school supplies along with thirteen backpacks filled with school supplies. DID YOU KNOW that in late 2013, Emily Holland a reporter with the South Side Weekly printed a story featur-ing our sister Parish, St. Basil-Visitation and highlighting its good works and the importance of a Catholic presence in the Englewood and Garfield Park neighborhoods, entitled "Peoria Street & Garfield Boulevard." DID YOU KNOW that St. Basil, once stood at Gar-field Blvd. and Honore serving people in the Back of the Yards. In 1990, St. Basil and Visitation consolidated and moved to its present location. Over the decades the faces in the pews have changed from Irish-American to African-American to Latino-American and the Parish continues to serve. DID YOU KNOW there has been one constant over the many decades between St. Colette and St. Basil; and that is the dedication of Barbara Collins of St. Basil and our Deacon John Connors' service to the needs of the poor. In 1982, Deacon John took over our Food Pantry which was begun by Sr. Jo-Ann Brdecka. Since that time Deacon John has served and has inspired many others to continue to serve others through our Food Pantry. While the challenges of the Garfield Blvd. neigh-borhoods have been many over the years, our sister parish, St. Basil-Visitation does not tire from its' mission as Emily Holland noted "....St. Basil’s mission is, after all, not to maintain a demographic but a faith; [its'] bulletin pledges, in English and Spanish, to 'continue the work of Jesus here in Englewood and maintain always His presence alive on the Boulevard.'" from Emily Holland' article in the South Side Weekly (November 6, 2013). Members of St. Colette Parish, in our own little way we have helped to make a difference well beyond the city limits of Rolling Meadows. Through your generosity of the Summer Give Away, some families this August may not have to choose between school clothing, school supplies and food for their family. ST. BASIL-VISITATION are over-whelmed by the generosity and so very thankful! Let us continue to serve with a Franciscan heart! "In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'" Acts 20:35

RCIA Classes begin in September . There is still time to join. Brian Lovitsch, the Coordinator of this program, can be reached at (224) 305 2845. For anyone above the age of reason (normally, seven years of age) and particular-ly adults, the way to become a Catholic is

through a process called The Rite of Christian of Adults (RCIA). RCIA is for both unbaptized persons and for baptized Christians who wish now to live their baptismal life in the tradition of the Catholic Church. We ask parishioners to, first and foremost, pray for those considering in joining and for an increase of people completing their initiation in our faith. We also ask that you take a look at the people in your life (family, friends, neighbors) and invite them to the parish and to discern joining the Body of Christ. We are called to be missionary disciples by Pope Francis and therefore, we must try to encourage others to ex-perience the love of Christ that draws us to follow Him and His church.
