    Tw o evening programs nextweek will highlight the 50th anni-versa ry celebra tion of the MapleA v e n u e Ch r i s t i a n R e fo r m edchurch.Former pastors and a specialanniversa ry book will help theloca l congrega tion commemora teits 50th birthday as an organizedchurch. The consis tory has s tipu-la ted the coming week as "Anni-versa ry Week," with this Sunday'sservices setting the keynote. Th epresent pas tor , the Rev.GeorgeGritter , and a former pas tor , theR e v . John A. De Kr uy te r , willhave charge of the services.On Wednesday, a congrega tiona lsupper will be held in the CivicCenter . Highlighting the programwill be an i l lus tra ted his tory ofthe church to be given by anotherformer pas tor , the Rev.GarethK o k . Th e anniversa ry book willalso be distributed at th is time.Coinciding with Ascension Dayservices on Thursday night, thecongrega tion will aga in ga ther fora spec ia l program with the Rev.De Kruyter in charge of the ser-m o n . Then on the la s t Sunday,Ma y 26, Rev. Gritter and the Rev.Kok will be in charge of the ser-vices.On May 22, 1913 the MapleAvenue Chris tian R eformed churchwa s officially organized. Class isHolland granted the petition -toorganize a c h u r c h in the westernpart of the c ity when the motherchurch, Fourteenth Street Chris tianReformed, could no longer accom-moda te the members. A b o u t 50families end some individua ls re-ported their willingness to organ-i z e . The firs t consis tory was madeup of Matthew Notier , Frank Bol-huis, John D. Klomparens, H er m a nSteggerda , as elders and H er m a nVan Fa a se n , Gerrit Vander Hill ,George Steffens and Albert Oelenas deacons.On June 9 , 1913, the congrega tionvoted to purchase the Fourth Re-formed church building which wassubsequently moved to the presentMaple A v e n u e site. The Rev. Wil-.iam D. Vander Werp b e c a me thefirs t minis ter of the church andremained until 1916 During hisstay , the congrega tion grew to103 families . The Rev. John P.Bat tema w as orda ined as M a p leAvenue's second pastor in Augustof 1917. In 1918, an annex was con-s truc ted to the church build ing toaccommodate the larger group.Following Rev. Battema's de ->arture in February of 1920, theHev. Daniel Zwier wa s ins ta lledon May 18, 1920.In 1936, the congrega tion approv-ed the construc tion of a parishhouse fo r catechism an d Sundayschool classes. On May 22, 1938,the congregation celebrated its25th annive rsary. By 1940 statisticsshowed tha t the num ber of familieshad increased to 188 w i th 42 9 com-m un ic a n t members and 267 adultmembers by baptism m a ki n g aota l of 766 members.Afte r over 25 years as minis terof M a ple Avenue , the R ev . Zwieraccepted a call to Can ada in 1945.Th e Rev. Gareth Ko k becameMaple Avenue's four th minis terate in 1940.On March 16, the congergationapproved the erection of a newchurch building when 60 per centof the funds had been ra ised,f inal ly three years later on May14, 1951, the congregation decidedo proceed with its buildin g plans .During the interim period the ser-vices were held in the Hollandtorstian High School gyrn. The

    last service w as held in the oldbuild ing on J une 10, 1951.Th e corners tone lay ing cere-mony for the new c h u r c h was heldon O c t . 9, 1951 and the f irs t churchservice in the new church was heldon A u g . 24 . 1952.R e v . Ko k accepted the ca ll toMinnesota in 1954 a fter servingMaple A v e . for about eight years.His place \vas taken by the R ev .John A . De K r u y t e r who was in-stalled on N ov . 21, 1954.Afte r serving Maple Avenue fo rabout six years, th e Rev. DeK r u y t e r accepted a call to Iowala te in 1960. Fina lly, a fter beingwithout a pastor of its own fo ra l m o s t a year and a ha lf , the pre-

    sent pastor, the Rev. GeorgeGritter , w as ins ta lled as M a p leA v e n u e ' s s ixth pas tor on May 27 ,1 9 6 2 .Three sons of the congrega tion,George Vander Hill , Gilbert Holke-boer and Lloyd Wolters have en -tered the gospel minis try.Th e M a p le Avenue c h u r c h c on -tr ibutes ta the support of the Rev.Holkeboer as miss ionary in Nigeriaand the Rev.
